Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

Hello! Okay, let me jump in here and try to address some of what I'm hearing. I'll do my best to address what I can and keep up with the conversation.

First off, our primary concern is customer safety and we are taking every necessary stop to ensure they do the software upgrade. While some customers took the necessary steps to disable GPS, the only way to ensure all customers are protected is to temporarily disable the Internet on devices that have *not* updated *by* Sunday, January 24 at 6am. If you do not upgrade until after that time, you will be reactivated with 24hrs of installing the update.

If there are customers having issues, please call in to Technical Support. They can help. Alternatively, they can go into any Rogers location.

Unfortunately, an over the air upgrade was not possible as these devices do not have an OTA client. The good news is that the 1.5 update that fixes the 911 bug also provides Sense UI for Magic, which now comes with Firmware OTA. This means we should be able to provide the 2.1 upgrade over the air later this year.

We do appreciate that this has been an inconvenience for our customers. So, we are going to automatically credit each of our Dream and Magic customers with one month of data fees (not including roaming). This should appear on your account within 60 days.

I hope that helps answer some of your concerns.

yeh that method of getting htc sync to work on windows 7 doesnt work for me..rogers has a hard enough time releasing updates for a phone thats 3 months out of date already it'll be a while till we see something for win7 / mac users...

i dont understand why mobile carriers are so crap in the states and canada..more expensive and less choice in terms of phones than the carriers in europe not to mention the fact that you dont have to deal with things like this..i miss o2 :(

EDIT: well i got it to work but only with usb debugging enabled which according to the pdf should be disabled..so yeh great...

Mary, you don't seem to get it... YOU don't get to force ME to do ANYTHING!

I am the customer here... Rogers and HTC ****ed up, you don't get to punish me or threaten me by taking away my data access until/unless I update!

I consider that a breech of contract!

Do you get that? YOU don't get to FORCE ME to upgrade!

This is true. Rogers cannot force and update on people at the force of removing data. That is a threat and now i have a reason to have m contract cancelled free of charge i will be calling tomorrow about that.

Hi Mary.

I am running the 1.6 firmware which is not affected by the 911 issue that affects the 1.5 firmware.

Will rogers disable internet access on my phone on the morning of January 24 even though I am running a firmware that is unaffected by the 911 issue?

Thanks for the help.

Yes they will. They will check by your radio number i believe

You know Mary, Mike is 100% correct in this. These are our devices not rentals. I'm just sorry that whomever is making the decisions is listening to the lawyers instead of someone with a little bit of common sense.

Granted 911 is a public safety issue but will turning off the data package for your customers prevent the bug from shutting down devices that have the GPS turned on? I think not. The lawyers probably determined that the only reason someone would have the GPS on is to use with some app that requires data access.

We pay Rogers for a data access package and in return for our hard earned money Rogers is supposed to supply us with such and such amount of data transfer. As far as I'm concerned, turning off my data is paramount to breach of contract and I would be in my right to terminate our business arrangements at that point.

As I've already performed the update it doesn't really concern me but there are others out there that have Dreams and Magics that they have rooted and installed their own bug free ROM's. Why should they have to install your update when their own device is already free of the bug.

If Rogers insists on going this route, I believe that come next week they will be missing quite a few customers. You have to speak to the powers that be there and get them to reconsider this decision.

Temporarily disabling internet access is the only decision we could make to ensure all customers can make 911 calls. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Dream and Magic customers on data plans will automatically be credited for one month of data fees (excluding roaming). This credit will show up on invoices within 60 days. We take this matter very seriously and continue to investigate the way this issue was addressed to determine how we can improve our internal and external processes.

100% Agree

I did install the update but this still does violate my contract. I can get them to remove the contract and i will keep my service with them. But i still don't like how it was a threat

I just spoke to Danny, a tech at Rogers. I informed him that I have Windows 7. He informed me that Rogers would be shipping me a special SD card with the files necessary to complete the update, and that it would take 3 days to get to me.

I asked him if that included the weekend or was it 3 business days, seeing as how Rogers was going to turn of my phone's internet access on the 24th. He said he wasn't sure, so I asked him to confirm with a manager.

He put me on hold and when he came back he said that it would be 3 business days, but that there should also be an update for Windows 7 available on the web site tomorrow. (Does this mean I am also getting an SD card shipped to me? He didn't say).

I then asked to be forwarded to customer service. I spoke to James, and asked him _three_ times whether or not I would be able to call and have my internet access reinstated after it was turned off even if I had NOT done the update, and he said YES.

Take that with all the salt in Utah.

Just off the phone with clueless Rogers tech support. He was a bit thrown when I told him that the "required software update" instructions said Mac and Win7 were unsupported - "and that's why I'm calling you!". "Uh, can you hold for a couple of minutes?" Came back 8 minutes later to say that a patch, to go directly to the sd card (which, of course, I CAN do from my Mac) will be available soon. "Will I get a text message?" "Uh, well, it might be good to check the website"....
He thanked me for my patience. I did not bother to ask whether this update will run properly on my rooted Magic because he was not going to know, was he....
Anyone got a good guess about whether I will have to unroot to run this compulsory "upgrade".

"Update"

So I did an update to a rooted Magic in Windows 7 x64... download the lastest HTC Sync. it has the windows 7 drivers.. the one on Rogers site is older here is the link HTC Sync upgrade for HTC Magic, Hero &Tattoo Release Date: 2010-01-13

Now install...
Reboot windows
Plug in your phone windows will install drivers...
HTC Sync will open make sure you close out of it. via the task bar.
Now run the RUU file from rogers... also I had debugging mode on..
the update works...

For some reason in windows 7 x64 the update will not work unless the phone was in debugging mode. and HTC Sync closed and not running.. but the reason you need to install HTC Sync is for the driver install..

Mine was a bit different:

Installed HTC Sync
Download the drivers
Turn on Debugging on Phone
Device Manager -> Android Phone -> Right Click -> Update Drivers -> Browse for driver on my pc.. -> Let me pick from a list... -> Find driver in the folder that you downloaded (theres two in that folder pick androidusb.inf) then select HTC, Corporation -> then My HTC
Phone should now be recognized by HTC Sync

Update:

Run the program downloaded from Rogers site
It'll reboot the phone at which point the phone will disconnect from the pc and then not be recognized again..
installer will give you an error saying the bootloader could not be restarded (something along those lines)
as phone restarts pc will pick it up but once again not be recognized by win7
repeat the driver installation process above
run update again

Anyone else having a hard time re-installing apps?

Can't seem to see Hi-Hiker or AugSatNav apps even though they are free apps!?!

All the other apps I was using prior to the update are re-installed just fine but just wondering why I can't see those two... And how many other free apps I can't see anymore. Or is this just due to still being on 1.5 and these apps have moved on?!?

My guess is that these apps have been "updated" for 1.6 and are no longer being offered for 1.5. For instance MyBackup (I own MyBackup Pro, purchased last year before 1.6 came out) is no longer visible on the free market - I recommended it to my roommate (also a Dream owner) before she did her backup, but it's gone, apparently available only through the software website. A few other apps have vanished recently as well.
