Root [How To] Return To Gingerbread And S-on

I'm having the same problem with the phone reading the image. I've tried 2 different sd cards and get the same problem.

Basically the only reason I'm wanting to unroot is to install the newest update from Verizon (that won't install since I'm rooted, I understand).

Can I install an updated root or do something that will let me install the Verizon update besides unrooting?

Yes, there is a thread that shows how to apply the November update with your current root setup.

I just unrooted my phone with your instructions. Thanks for them but I want to make sure it's unrooted. When I checked the android version and all of that it also listed a kernel version. Does that mean I'm not fully unrooted? I also still have the superuser app on my phone. Do I need to just delete that and other apps that were on from before or how else can I know it's unrooted for sure. I just want it done asap because it's draining my battery a ton and I'm not really using it at all. Thanks a bunch!

Update: The files linked below have been updated to include stock 2.2 plus the 'November OTA' contents.

There have already been several requests for information on how to downgrade back to the official 2.2. The following process will remove root. Whether you need to return a phone or you just want to clean the slate and go back to stock, here is how to get there:

Note: Your SD card MUST be formatted to FAT32 before proceeding. The file will not be recognized otherwise. If you have yet to format, remember that formatting wipes the card. Be sure to copy/move your SD contents to a safe place (PC desktop) and replace after the formatting process. I will not go into the procedure in this thread as it is easily found with a Google search.

1.) Need to return a phone and currently have S-Off? (aka Unrevoked Forever) If so, please visit public:forever [RootWiki] where you can download the latest S-On tool and the process to load to your phone. If you want to keep S-Off and just return to the official 2.2, skip to step 2.

2.) Download the 2.2 PB31IMG.zip (extracted from the official 2.2 RUU)

Mirror 1 (Credit and thanks to Doug Piston for hosting)
Mirror 2

Once downloaded, rename the file to PB31IMG

Note the file size (172 MB) and the MD5 (31BB1611A0FA8197D447C0438426717E) to ensure a successful download and file integrity. If you have questions about how to verify MD5, please see post #2 of this thread.

3.) Attach phone to PC with USB debugging on and in disk drive mode.

4.) Access the SD storage and drag the PB31IMG zip file (still fully zipped) from the desktop onto the root of the SD card (any open area, do not place into a folder).

5.) Swipe down notification bar on phone and change to charge only.

6.) Unplug phone from PC and turn off phone.

7.) Hold volume down while pressing power button to enter hboot.

8.) PB31IMG.zip should be automatically recognized in hboot. Press volume up to continue with update. Do NOT interrupt.

9.) When finished, reboot to stock 2.2 and verify the following information at Menu > Settings > About Phone:

Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.07.28
Software Number: 3.26.605.1

10.) Remove the PB31IMG.zip from the SD card to avoid an inadvertant reload in the future. You are now unrooted and on stock 2.2

Also adding the RUU option for those that are interested. Thanks again to Doug for the upload/host. For those new to RUU, download to a PC and run from there:

http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/RUU...4k_NV_1.70_PRL58006_release_152016_signed.exe

Note for RUU:
You may wish to install HTC Sync (at least temporarily) if you haven't had prior root dealings on your current PC as it will auto-install the necessary driver for phone recognition.

Is this method applicable to HTC Desire? As I badly need to downgrade my phone. Thanks

What I Need To Do:
- Unroot without any visible trace of being rooted

What The Problem is/ What I Can't Do:
- Once booted into ClockwordMod recovery, no option will work there...can't even select to Power Down. When I select any option in the list, all I get is a black screen with the CWMod Icon. If I tap the power button, the CWMod list of options re-appears, but I have to pull the battery to get back in a regular bootable state. I'm needing to run the .zip on the SD card to get S-ON again so I can eventually run the .zip to unroot. Since I can't even select to "install a .zip from your SD card" I can't proceed.

A friend was playing with my phone yesterday and selected to install Lithium (I had been running Uncommon Sense since I rooted back in Dec.) without my permission thinking it was "just a theme" and without the adequate knowledge of installing ROMs. My last Titanium Backup was last week and thankfully it's on my PC. Anyway, I got my phone back in hand completely wiped of ALL my apps including ROM Manager and Titanium. The market app keeps force closing so I can't get in there to redownload anything AND I can't recover any data :mad: WTF did she do???

My Environment:
* Rooted SLCD Incredible (used Unrevoked3 Dec 2010)
* Running LithiumNG-0.0.5-Incredible ROM
* Android OS v2.2.1
* Radio 2.15.00.07.28
* Debugging is enable (if it matters)

**If anymore info is please let me know. I'm at work and not sure if I left anything out. Thanks a ton in advance!

Being unable to access any Clockwork option is a rough deal. You might try a factory reset from the phone settings menu to start with so long as it's still an option in that Rom.

If all else fails, you can still use the "return to stock" zip in this thread to get back to stock 2.2, then reroot in order to get Clockwork back. At that point you could load the s-on file using Clockwork, then run the unroot file a 2nd time so you'd end up unrooted and s-on.

The above is keeping in mind that you don't have to use Clockwork for the unrooting procedure. As the thread states, you will place the zip on the SD card, then the volume up key to accept and load.

If anybody else has another idea, chime in.

Worked like a charm. Thanks, ready to return because of random reset loops issue. Now I hope I get a refurb that doesn't have the issue.

Having the same issue with my Incredible. No matter where I am or what I am doing with the phone (had it since July 2010). Rooted the phone in Nov. 2010. Last two weeks the phone has been just problematic that I knew I had to return it. I should be getting the replacement in a couple days. The steps shown in the OP worked perfectly.

What is the significance of having the phone in USB debugging mode to copy over the zip file?

I only ask because I'm restoring my phone back to stock from a different computer than I did my root and whatnot, so it's bugging me about installing drivers when I'm in USB debugging mode.

Mainly typed it that way because that's the way I always do it. I'm not sure if you MUST have debugging enabled or not b/c I've always done it out of habit. Try it without if you want, as long as you can get the file on the card you're good.

Also, you could use a USB card reader or a laptop with an SD slot (along with a micro to SD adapter) and get the file on there that way.

Okay. Just wanted to be sure. I didn't follow those particular steps verbatim so it doesn't matter too much. Procedure worked great and I'm back to stock. Thanks a ton!
