Unlocked Magic work on Telus in non-3G areas?

I'm considering unlocking my Rogers HTC Magic and using it with Telus. Does anyone know if voice will work in areas that don't have 3G coverage? Looking at the specs of the Magic vs. the Hero the radio stuff seems to be the same, but I'd like to know for sure before making the switch.

Any other caveats to be aware of?

Thanks!

 Do you have 'roaming' checked off in the setting?

I had to enable Data roaming under the Mobile Networks settings in order to get a data connection. With respect to voice I'm seeing the "R" in the status bar icon that shows the signal strength, so the phone thinks it's roaming. I've verified that Telus is the network operator so I'm for sure NOT roaming. Must be a glitch with using this phone on the Telus network.
