What "band" is texting on? 3g? lesser?
SMS, like digital voice, is a 2G service - text send/receive works via CDMA even with 3G, 4G, and wifi all turned off.
So just at home on your wifi there is no need to turn off 3G also? I turn it off at work but that is cause I'm in a basement with a bad signal.
Under normal conditions, you can move around all day with 3G and wifi on and just not care about battery life (turn off "Network notification" under "Wi-Fi settings").
If you tend to keep data services running (background data, email updates, twitter, etc) and you're in a fringe or poor signal area where you may not care that stuff, then turn off your radios - that was Evo advice. With the newer phones and better efficiency, you may find that even that step just isn't that important.
