Turn around...

-“New” Notification that drops down, just like all Android phones.
-“New” lockscreen to app feature, just like all 3.0 Android phones.
-“New” Twitter integrated function. Twitter feeds are always live on Android.
-“New” tab browsing! Just like all PC’s and Android tablets!
-“New” access to camera from lockscreen, just like all 3.0 Android phones.
-“New” use volume to snap picture, just like some older and rooted Android phones.
-“New” photo cropping feature. There’s and Android Market app for that.
-“New” split keyboard for the iPad. Split keyboards currently available for Android tablets: Thumbs Keyboard, SwiftKey TouchType, Tablet Keyboard for Honeycomb.
-“New” feature! You no longer need your computer to backup and sync using wifi! Funny, I’ve been backing up and syncing using wifi AND the network since I had my first Sprint phone (Instinct), my second phone (Palm Pre) and my Android phone (Evo 4g).
-“New” over the air updates (OTA), most all Android phones are OTA
-“New” ability to create and delete photo albums! Available on all Android phones since...forever.
-"New" AirPlay feature for iPad = Splashtop Remote Desktop HD app for Android tablets.
-“New” feature shows how much memory is being used by each app AND the ability to delete each apps data. Android users have been going Settings > Applications > Manage Applications since Android 2.1 to see such information.
-“New” LED flash for alerts! Gasp! How did I ever know who left me a message before? Thanks, Mr. Jobs.
-“New” alternate routes in maps! Sprint’s Telenav beat you to that 2 years ago Apple.
-“New” local weather in weather app! Android: been there, been doing that.
-“New” Japanese and Buddhist calendar support! How did I ever live without this!
-“New” Personal Hotspot settings are now found under ‘Network’ settings, just like Android’s!

I don’t know, I thought the iPhone was about simplicity and it’s minimalistic “pick up and go” style, the more and more I’ve read about the new iOS, the more and more I’ve come to realize that the majority of these “new” features, have always been available on Android and, the more and more I’m glad to be an Android owner and not an Apple user.

Apple is, and has always been about bringing good ideas in information and communication to the masses and controlling the OS and hardware so they have a better chance of making it work without too many hassles. It doesn't necessarily have to be only their ideas, although they do have some good ones.

You have to remember that all these "new" features may not be new to the world, but are definitely new to iOS users.

Ironically Apple is suing others for copying Apple.

All the big companies are sue-happy. If you ask me it's the idiotic IP patents being issued.

I'd like a patent for burping while standing on one foot and here's my 600 page application written by my team of perpetually employed patent attorneys, emailed from their yacht anchored somewhere off the coast of Fiji. Please find my accompanying blank check and the phone number of a discreet prostitute in your area.

Everyone is trying to copy everyone else. You thing Google and Android app developers never try to emulate iOS? Not all of those features are unique to Android either. Macs have had tabbed browsing for years too. I'll give you the notifications though, although I think notification center bests androids notifications by allowing you to customize which notifications are shown and how many recent ones, as well as rearrange them. You can also dismiss individual notifications. I wish Android would get some of those features, and it likely will at this point. Competition breeds innovation so Apple doing well means our phones will get better too.

To be honest... In my opinion... The fact that Apple made these changes to iOS-5 while at the same time suing Samsung for copyright infringement shows the absolute arrogance, hypocrisy, and greed Apple has. It's almost unbelievable they can sue a company who makes Android phones on one hand and in the other modify their own iOS to essentially copy Androids great and popular features. Absolute double standard... it's disgusting. Trying to make your product successful is one thing. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all. But imitating another product and then attacking that same product to reduce it's success because they have done things right is another thing completely... It's jealousy and greed. Plain and simple.

Apple makes great products and iOS is a great Operating System. However this action by Apple against Samsung followed by their changes to iOS-5 has me disgusted by the way corporations work anymore...

On a lighter note; If you want to get really picky... you could say everyone is copying Palm. I still remember my old black and white Palm Pilot & stylus. Hehe

Oh Maxey, what would we ever do without you!

Always makes my day to see you post once in awhile. :)

Seriously though, it is blatant copying. That's what iOS is built on, as well as Android. It's just lately apple has been late to the copy game, or they've run out of original ideas. Either way, I'm gonna love seeing how it turns out for them. They might actually get sued, or it's going to cause a major shift of things for both Android and Apple. Only good things to come from this.

i find it funny when people claim Apple has run out of original ideas, yet where would Google be if not for Apple and iOS? Where would the entire mobile market be without Apple?
Success breeds contempt, and many Android users seem to have a lot of contempt for Apple! And Apple is the most sued tech company in the world. They're used to it.

I agree. Apple is why we are here to a large degree. One thing I know about Apple: it is an amazing company and their success is phenomenal for a good reason. This amazing success had to come from somewhere and the tens of millions of users can not all be fools.

They have a way of bringing new things to market that astounds people and these are products that tens of millions of people buy. And some say these buyers are fools because they fell for the Apple hype; they should go Android which is better. All the while not knowing enough to know if or why Android is better of it it really is better.

They are just another form of Fanboy.

Apple is far from being done with the tablet market. And the iPad is why we have other tablets like Android tablets. I watch the TV commercials and so far, about all they seem to offer is Flash and all these amazing applications which are old hat from Apple. There is a commercial set to the Flash Gordon theme song. Clearly a stab at Apple. So what does Apple do? They ignore Flash and for a very good list of reasons.

I have a feeling they will continue to bring new and amazing products to market because that is their history; it is in the Apple DNA.

I bought an iPad and never looked back. It was the best product at the time and there is no reason to assume that Android tablets will kill off Apple sales. Nothing on the Android side comes close as far as I am concerned. Android tablets are getting better, so I am not saying Android will always play second fiddle to Apple.

Android folks are clever, too.

Manufacturers love Android. My thinking is because Android is free; it is a major component of your Android device. And, if Apple licensed iOS, you would likely see hundreds of different devices using iOS and probably fewer Android devices.

Some here claim Apple stole this idea or that idea from Android. I say, Apple gave many Android developers ideas and if you want to use the word "stole," there is plenty of blame to shovel on top of the little green robot. Everyone takes great ideas and spins it their own, unique way.

This is good for all of us because it forces Apple and Android to bring new ideas to market and to us. Long live them both.

So here is a question for those that know: because the Android OS is free, how does current law or rules existing in the Android OS licensing agreement address using parts of the Android OS in commercial products?

I guess I am asking is if Google could sue Apple, if Apple blatantly copied in form and function, something unique to the Android OS and incorporated it into iOS.

I could see a suit if Google charged for their OS and Apple actually did steal something, but Android is free(?) and that seems to make a difference in my mind. But I have not read the licensing agreement.

Any takers?

However . . . did Apple have a legitimate case against Samsung? If they did, they are within their absolute right to sue. I ask because I refuse to worry about Apple's assorted law suits and I have not looked into it.

I do know that Samsung is no stranger to IP litigation. Perhaps their suits was silly, too. And lest me remind you, few people here would care about these suits if we were not bombarded by their announcements on the web; often spun by Apple Fan Boys/Android Fanboys to support how deplorable Apple/Android is or are.

As for Palm, we were sued by The Pilot Pen Company over the name Pilot. We were sued over ESD problems (Electro Static Discharge) but too bad they did not hire me as a paid consultant. Some things that went on at our location would send Palm Pilot owners bat Sh&* crazy; ESD issues being the far lesser of a dozen evils.

I really need to write a book. Talk about lawsuits, I know stuff.

We could have sued any number of competitors and they, us, for all manner of look and feel issues. I remember my WinCE devices. They could pass (in many respects) for iOS and Android OS devices of today.

Bottom line: everyone borrows ideas and this will never change. Life is tough, wear a cup. Smiley!

All the big companies are sue-happy. If you ask me it's the idiotic IP patents being issued.

I recall a company called IPPanics or PanixIP or Panix IP or something like it that actually patented the process of selling products electronically. I saw the legitimate patent on a patent search site and I recall writing about this company and their rather interesting patent.

The patent was indeed issued.

In a nutshell, their patent covered all possible ways of selling things electronically. If you sold through a web site, handled payments electronically, sold by email etc., you were in violation of their legally issued patent.

From Sears, to Amazon, to Pets are Us, to your efforts on eBay, if you did not license the patent, you were in violation of a proper patent. As I recall, the legitimacy of this patent was argued in court and several sellers paid the fee to the company.

I mention this because you are correct about patents. Many people have argued that the process mist be changed so clearly bad patents are either dissolved or not approved in the first place.

Not at all sure if their efforts were struck down or they gave up or not.

I don't understand why folks seem to think apple are not guilty as anyone else when it comes to coping or taking ideas from others and putting their own twist to it. The bottom line is, apple copy just like everyone else no matter how you look at it. I wish folks would stop using the lame old excuse that if it wasn't for apple their wouldn't be a google. I'm sure something would have come to exist even without apple. Most of the technology wasn't even originated by apple.Did apple wake up the phone industry? yes but many have stepped up as well and are doing somethings either just as good as apple or better.

Minor correction: few say sans Apple, no Google. Android is the thing we compare Apple to.

Good discussion here. As was said, I'm happy that Android and iOS are doing well and exist in the first place. Apple more than jump started the smartphone market, which is certainly fine by me, since I spend most of my day playing with my 3vo and/or reading about other smartphones. I'm just happy to see gadgets like these becoming popular so I can play with friends' phones and give them tips about stuff etc.

Hardware wise, Apple has originated much, but they have co-originated a few things (i.e. Thunderbolt). What sets Apple apart is their ability to bring ideas, hardware and software to the mainstream. The mouse, USB, app stores, light peak, touchscreen smart phones, tablets, etc... all made mainstream by Apple.
Having Google around to push Apple to make their stuff better (and vice versa) is a bonus for us. If not for Google, I doubt Apple would bother to put everything it is into iOS5, and that would suck!

It all depends on what the user wants. The notification bar wasn't on iOS already because no one really "needed" it or wanted it. Android gets popular and users are like "hey apple, wait a minute, we need this." And boom.

Just look at wallpaper too. I had an iPhone, remember when it was just black wallpaper and then BOOM wallpaper. I will be honest, I'm kinda an Apple fanboy. I have a Macbook Pro and iPad and LOVE them. But, I love my Atrix 4G now. Android has surpassed iPhone, at least software if not even hardware right now, and Apple in my opinion is playing catch-up. I love both Android and iPhone, but right now the winner is Android.

My atrix 4G (even on AT&T) would kick the iPhone 4's butt. Ha.

I just look at it this way. Its flattering that apple used or stole however you want to look at it android stuff. It shows That now android is a threat and they need to step up their game or get left behind. I look fwd apple to have their own form of widgets and so on. Android is always advancing and apple seems to be doing a slow crawl. I serious think apple thought android was not a threat and was just a fad. Guess they know now this is what more and more people wants.

Android is always advancing and apple seems to be doing a slow crawl. I serious think apple thought android was not a threat and was just a fad. Guess they know now this is what more and more people wants.

So, what exactly do people want? I wonder just how much of Android's popularity is due to the abundance of free or dirt cheap phones rather than some technical reason. Are we saying that Android is popular because people recognize the technical superiority of the OS or is it because they see they can get a free phone?

Most people are not likely concerned with the technicalities of the OS or hardware. They want Facebook, the web, email access, the mighty YouTube, access to their music and the like. If you give it to them in a cool package that costs them zero dollars, it is likely a given; they will go Android rather than iPhone.

So android grows and iPhone haters think it is because people think Android is technically superior and people care about the minutia, like who apparently stole some ideas from God knows where.

I'll will suggest if the iPhone were free or perhaps $19.95, you would see vastly more iPhone users out there compared to Android. And if Apple allowed iOS to be used by others, you would see far more iOS phones. And, if Apple gave iOS away for free, you would see even more iOS phones.

Android's popularity is due in part to the fact that it is free. The OS is the most important part of the device.

Apple grows through innovation and knowing what people seem to want. Android does the same thing. The battle is interesting and we the people are the ultimate winners.
