Can someone honestly explain the pizza delivery fee??

As most of you may know, all of the major pizza chains (pizza hut, domino's, Papa Johns, etc) charge a delivery fee, an average of $2.50 or so. Does anyone work or has worked at a pizza place that can explain this fee? When I order online, they state that this fee does not go to the driver, so why do I have to pay extra for delivery if it's not paying the driver or paying for gas for the driver (or is it?). Oh, btw, I'm new here.

Its a factored in tip. Many people dont tip the driver and the driver makes most of his money from tips. So this is why many deliveries do this. So the guy gets some money. Thats how I think it is. If they cant tell you whats its for then of course it goes to the driver.

It does go towards gas, drivers get paid per mile (not much last I knew) and it probably goes towards insurance/worker's comp/liability too. If they have a 10 mile delivery radius and the driver gets paid .25/mile it's covered by the fee. It doesn't go to the driver at all, they never see any of that money...so tip the poor guy.
I worked in a pizza place a long time ago, we never charged for delivery...just more for the pizza. lol.

Where I live, almost all pizzas get delivered for free. There is, however, a 10% rebate at the restaurant if you eat there or if you pick up your order. That's just stupid.

Anyway, I though that drivers had an unchanging salary (aka minimum wage) and they would also get tip from the deliveries. The delivery cost is there for the business owner to actually get a profit from deliveries instead of a loss. He has to pay for the gas (it ain't free!) and the delivery boy's salary.

I know of one pizza place in my area that does a fee for delivery, it's $3-4. The reason they do it is that they have their own vehicles (to cover gas/maintenance/insurance) and also pay the person $1.50 more an hour to make up for getting less tips. It's by far the cushiest gig there, the delivery guy sits corner and watches TV until they have to deliver. They also have a minimum of $35 order to be able to get delivery. I knew a guy that did it for a year, he loved it. He said he played more PSP at that job than in the couple years he owned it before.

Everywhere else delivers free if over $10 or $15.

It's been almost 7 years since I worked in a Pizza Hut and then I RARELY worked in a delivery unit or understood everything about them. IIRC though, the driver DOES get a mileage reimbursement from the store, this fee covers that reimbursement and also likely insurance for the restaurant to cover the unlikely event of a vehicular accident on the job.

These people make minimum wage or just slightly better, TIP THEM. I can't stand seeing people complain about the delivery fee and say that it just cost the driver his/her tip, it's not the driver's choice that the establishment charges this fee. You'd probably spend at least as much in gas to go get it yourself, don't be cheap...

When I worked for a pizza place it was a small local business - they charged $2.00 for delivery. I made the same as the waitresses/waiters per hour and the delivery charge was mine. Most people were nice and tipped anyway. Some didn't. Don't blame it on the delivery person.

Actually its not a tip. Dominos explicitly states that it is not. Not too sure for about any other places. To me it's like Sprint's Premium data fee: No workable explanation, but you just pay it.

On a related topic - what about the tip jar at the counter. That one I really don't understand. Isn't their job to get your food for you. It's not like they are taking your order and bringing you the food and then cleaning up after you. They stand there, take your order, wait until it's cooked and ring you up.

While I understand your point, I think that backlash comes from the general and growing abuse of "tip" and seemingly growing amount of obscure fees, in the US.

Having recently left and returned to the country, some of the practices some businesses use to get extra money here, legit or not, are getting a bit ridiculous, and so I see why some consumers have this general reaction (though some people are genuinely cheap). Most recently I went to sit down at a place, where they decided to automatically include tip on any and all bills, regardless of party size, and you had to talk with the manager to have it removed. Huh?

I honestly had to shake my head at that one (and there has been worse), but "tipping" has come a long way from what was originally intended, and along with various fees, has led me to alter my dining habits.

To stay on topic, I don't mind paying the additional fee to have the convenience. Given the amount of deals constantly thrown around for pizza, I figure it balances out, anyway (and in Hawaii, you pay as much as $30 for pizza that you pick up yourself, so I can't complain about anything under that, haha).

It's just a way for the owner to make more money, often at the expense of the driver. There's plenty of profit on pizza for it not to be needed. They know most people will happily pay a couple of bucks to have their pizza delivered so it's free extra profit for them. Many other people aren't happy about the charge but will just take it out of the drivers tip. Again the owner makes free extra profit while the driver that counts on the tip to make decent money gets boned. Some people don't want to pay that fee and will pick up their pizza and again the owner wins because he's not paying gas money to a driver, plus if it happens enough he can have one less driver working at a time. The only way he loses is with people that won't order from a place that charges that fee, and if every pizza place does it even that isn't an issue. Around here not many charge it and I refuse to order from one that does.

Of course once I do tip all of these people I can no longer afford to pay for my house, but whatever.

I wouldn't consider trash collectors or package delivery people as people I would tip, regardless of the fact that I'm never there when they deliver. Bagger at the market? Maybe, but I never have on me what I would consider appropriate. The rest of them, absolutely. In fact, I tip the girl that cuts my hair 25%, I can walk in, sit down, she gets right to work and there's no question as to how I want it, and yes she's cute.

I would have liked it better if tips would be given on occasion only, when great service is received. Now when the waiter messes up my order and seems angry when I tell him, I am still expected to tip him at least 10%-15%.

Since when do you tip the trash man, UPS guy, USPS guy, FedEx guy, newspaper guy, and grocery bagger?

I've never heard or have felt like it was expected of me to tip them. You can definitely save some of your money by not tipping them since it's rare that anyone would tip them.

by the time you get your kiddies dresed and in the car calm their crying and drive between 3-10 miles eat, and then do the process all over and go home $2.50 is a bargain. also we had to work we took orders washed dishes or what ever we never got to sit around and play video games but it is wear and tear on the car stop go is bad for brakes starter and mileage
