Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

Sorry, but you are wrong. If you scroll up you will see that RogersMary posted here very recently to specifically tell us the following:
Seems like with other situations there is miscommunication inside Rogers as well as to their customers. Guess we'll see what happens Monday morning and someone calls in to have their data access enabled.

However you don't know, so you shouldn't speculate. I had to add a data plan to my voice plan to get the Magic. I doubt they will let me out of my data plan without paying the ETF.
There's a difference between rampant speculation (which this thread is filled with, including a lot of your recent "big brother" posts) and making an assumption on future business practices based on past behavior.

That wasn't my comparison. I was suggesting simply that this is a precedent, and what if any ISP took such action to make you install anything?
Keep a couple of things in mind. The internet is a much more mature technology then Android devices/smartphones. As such the business practices, user familiarity, etc. have evolved and its become a more open platform. I remember when I first got online the ISP provided you the modem (which they still do in most markets) as well as a specific dialer that you had to use to gain access. It restricted how you got onto their network and what you had access to. As the technology evolved and more safeguards were built in those restrictions were eventually removed. That said, read your ISP's TOS and they'll explain their security and usage policy. Violate that and you could get cut off.

Perhaps in a business setting, but we are talking about a consumer setting. Microsoft has never threatened to make my computer, or even a part of it, stop working, unless I have pirated Windows.
If anything the consumer standard should be set higher since many of the people using the technology are idiots and need to be protected from themselves, thats what Rogers is doing.

And while Microsoft won't stop existing functionality from working if you fail to upgrade you're going to be left with a system more vulnerable to security breaches, crashes, etc. So let me ask, do you use windows update and download the patches when they become available or do you search out the minutia of what changes were made and how it might impact your system before installing anything?

Akkuzo, I would really like to know how/if Rogers will know if we did the update too. Like is it as simple as phoning in and saying ok I updated it and they take our word for it?

The only thing i can think of is that at 1st boot up after the patch maybe there is a one time run script to send something to rogers w/ your phone number or radio number something saying it was run on this device. That sounds far fetched to me though. But I really have no idea how rogers would tell what rom you are running otherwise. I don't even think they know your IMEI unless they did some batman shit with their network ops and that would cost money which rogers does not like to spend. I had a problem with my first Dream on day eight, the track ball losing its tactile feedback (oh man try explaining that to rogers its like pulling hens teeth) and they had to ask me for my IMEI number to get the exchange rolling for a new phone. I asked the CSR if she could just pull it up in my records and she said no. I would have to hang up and remove the battery and check the number and call her back, thankfully I remembered that all rogers cell phone boxes have the IMEI number on the outside so I just read it to her off the box, avoiding having to call back and going into call hold for next CSR que for 20mins.

I feel like I should have gotten an iPhone like I got my fiancee instead. I do own a couple macs, I love them but I just liked the idea of an "open" phone better than a closed phone so to speak. In the end maybe it is better to just get an iphone and listen and do as steve jobbs says. at least he doesn't punish you for not running updates. for all you pondering getting an android device from rogers, who the hell knows what crap they will try and pull next after this fiasco is over. Atleast rogers is *NOT* allowed to screw with the Steve Jobbs holy grail. Apple decides when updates come out, not the trying to save a buck providors. Go get an iPhone. I kinda really want one now.

Hi All - Just want to clarify something I've seen in a few spots.

All customers are being asked to upgrade this important 911 fix for Dream and Magic. Customer safety is the absolute priority. For those who do not download the s/w fix, internet access will be disabled until it has been completed. This will not impact voice or sms.

Customer Care **will not** re-enable access if the fix has not been implemented on your device. This will be automatically done within 24hrs.

No, no, no! This will not do at all!

I run a very stable, very user-friendly, and very FIXED 1.6 ROM. I have no need, and no will to go back to 1.5 and lose half the app I use regularly.

If I understand you correctly (and I really hope i don't), I won't get back data until Rogers has been satisfied that I have installed the patch? That is absolutely ridiculous.

I will not lose data, and apps for this.

I want to thank you and Rogers for finally giving us Sense on the Magic. It's an unparalleled user experience which I believe now surpasses that of the iPhone, it's amazing!!

@yycken
I agree the bitching needs to stop. Rogers gave us a free phone, let us keep our current phone, and on top of that is giving us a free month of data usage, and people are STILL bitching. From my experience whiners like these guys will always bitch no matter what you give them.

Here are some of my favorite features added in Sense in case anyone wants more motivation to upgrade :p

-multitouch in browser. I haven't noticed any other situations where there is multitouch though.
-MUCH faster browsing. I don't know how to prove this but browsing seems to be a lot faster and more smooth.
-More "workspaces" instead of 4 we now have 7 pages where we can put apps/widgets.
-HTC widgets - some of these are good, some are aweful. The Stocks, and Twitter widgets are really nice. But others are pretty slow/buggy - mainly the music widget, when scrolling between albums it takes forever :(. Also "settings widgets" allow you toggle by pressing on a shortcut. Such as Wifi, Bluetooth toggle it saves a lot of time!
-faster clock speed - I have heard (not 100% sure) that they increased the clock speed to 528MHz presumably it was clocked lower bc of battery usage, that being said my battery still lasts me the full day so I'm not complaining

Feel free to add to the list!

May i ask you one stupid question?
if i never upgrade how disabling internet will help rogers achieve its goal to preserve customer safety? Maybe you better disable voice? so i need to change phone...

P.S. I have 1.6 rom and don't want to downgrade.

It has the same FLASH as the Hero. I just confirmed it myself. I believe it's mobile flash 3.1 which is almost flash v8 so it works...errr... sometimes. I got it working in some games on addictinggames.com. It doesn't work for video on TSN for example and sadly, I couldn't get it to work in dolphin browser...where have others gotten it to work?

Unfortunately, that was not possible for these devices. However, the new 1.5 update for Magic that fixes the bug and provides Sense UI does have the Firmware OTA. So, once the 2.1 upgrade for Magic is ready, we should be able to do it OTA.

While I certainly appreciate your efforts on our behalf, Mary, and I'm glad the 911 issue has been dealt with, I would also like to know why Rogers didn't simply give us the 1.6 upgrade (which contained the 911 fix) rather than a patched-together 1.5 update. It's one thing to say that the Dream can't handle 2.1 due to memory constraints - I do not approve, but I do understand of Rogers not encouraging customers to root their phones - but another entirely to deny Dream users an update we know can run on our handsets (and some say the Dream can also run 2.0).

Surely the best solution is to do all that is reasonable and possible for your customers. Continuing promised upgrades on a phone that is less than a year old is reasonable. Giving us Android 1.6 is possible, and most of us will not be content customers until we get it. Certainly this episode has made me more seriously consider leaving Rogers permanently once my current contract is up. Perhaps by then the Google-made phones will have made it to Canada.

Anyone have and idea when we might get our magics now? UPS in theory was supposed to be here between 10:00am and 2:00pm today with a magic for me. I ordered it on the 18th. Well before the Thursday noon cutoff to be processed for Saturday delivery.

I am thinking with the recent 911 fiasco, I wont be getting one for a while now. It sure would be nice if rogers indeed has decided to hold my new phone in limbo till whatever gets sorted out they could TELL ME. Another customer service fail.

I have this order receipt in my inbox from rogers sales confirming my magic update, saying my new contract will start at the beginning of my next billing cycle. SO this begs the question will I even see a magic before my next billing cycle? So far THAT would be rogers only breech of contract if I still don't have one by next billing cycle.

I will phone them a bit later and ask whats up and when I should get my magic now... eventually one day? They should be calling me to tell me whats up though. Or even an email would be nice, you guys do have it after all. And obviously my phone number :p

I always had to call the customer to inform them of issues when I used to manage a computer warehouse if we could not deliver parts ect on time because of this that or the other thing, its called customer courtesy.

Ditto! Honestly, I don't think there's much to complain about if you're an original Magic user. There was a problem and now its been fixed. Move on and quite your bitching. How many people had piled on about calling the media, filing a class action suit, etc. because of the 911 issue? Now you're whining about the fix because Rogers is forcing its implementation? What would make you happy?

Dream owners (myself included) have less to complain about. Not only did they fix the 911 issue they also stepped up big time and gave you a new phone. I guarantee you that Bell or TELUS would have told you to pack sand in a similar situation.

Yes, there were errors made but Rogers, and in particular RogersMary, have attempted to fix the situation as well as possible an keeping all interested parties happy.

The biggies for me are the improved UI, more choices for customization, more workspaces and yes multi-touch is cool. I also like the little robot who wave at you when starting up.....he makes me smile :)

Only complaint is that I can't find the version of cribbage I previously had installed.

Like markW said, this now kicks the iphones ass! I was playing around with the GF's iphone GS this morning and its not as fast, I still don't like its UI and frankly find navigating cumbersome. The only current upside to the iphone is access to paid apps. Although frankly I don't mind not having that ability since I know if I did have the ability to purchase apps I'd be like a fat kid in a candy store and trying everything.....could rack up the charges quickly.

I’m glad they finally pushed out a fix for the 911 bug after 5 months of sitting on it.

But cuttng off my service to force me to do it on top of only giving 48hrs is all kinds of wrong.

This is setting a dangrous precedence.

Just add one more reason why I’m not going to renew my contract after three long years of this BS.

Please let me know if anyone is able to get out of their contracts, I know I'll be trying.

@yyken @markW So where were the two of you when all these "whiners" were fighting to have your devices supported by Rogers/HTC. I don't think that you were out there on the trenches fighiting for your own rights. You were content enough to let the "whiners" do it for you.

Why cant you have a little respect for the people that spent countless hours of their time working to bring you these phone upgrades.

agree completely. while forcing us to do it is a pain in the arse, well...it is what it is. We have the sense update, we have another update to 2.1 coming and we get data usage fees waived for a month.. that's a pretty good deal (not to mention rogers allowed dream users to upgrade to a magic for free). I am very pleased with rogers regarding this situation with android.

I called, e-mailed and bugged rogers just as many people did to get the point across. If we should be thanking someone it is rogersmary for noticing and bringing us these updates.

Sure, whatever. If it makes you feel better, you just go ahead and continue putting down the people that worked so hard for everything. No that your satisfied, go ahead and turn on others.

As someone from the evil empire down South, I rely on the kindness of the great Northern people to solve my Magic problem.

I know GreatBigDog is quite passionate about this issue...and here is the other shoe falling - I see the 911 issue like a gas leak that requires the gas company to shut down a whole block in order for it to be repaired properly. Could that have been done better, such as a typical reboot of a computer? Sure. Maybe Roger's action of turning off data is just to ensure that the E911 issue is fixed.

In the meantime, I'll wait for more info. before updating my phone down here. I am sure I have to manually input the APN settings again.

So, who wants a Molson?

The Dream being dead-ended @ 1.5 and GPS/911 are two separate issues. Rogers addressed the first because of public pressure and the second for appropriate user safety (and I'm sure a healthy fear of being sued).

I've acknowledged that there were people who helped push the issue of Dream upgrade and think its great that they were passionate enough to be part of the effort. But "out in the trenches"???? Give me a break. There were plenty of other people who took up the torch and contacted Rogers without feeling the need to advertise insistently about it.

Its not about respect or lack thereof but simple common sense. There was a problem, people took to having it resolved through different means and in the end Rogers did the right thing. Beyond the existing thanks and acknowledgement that have been provided for everyone what would you like?

Christ on a pony. No one is putting down the efforts that you or anyone else put in but its time for a reality check. This is about a free phone, not discovering a cure for cancer, solving world hunger or middle-east peace.

Thanks dude, I can be passionate in regards to how we were treated by rogers/htc. For the information of others on the forum I was probably one of the first to install the upgrade as I received notice directly by email before the sms messages went out. I was satisfied when Rogers upgraded my dream. mjscjmidt was satisified when Rogers agreed to upgrade magic to 2.1. Both of us and many others are still here now working on getting an upgrade to the LG EVE, we didn't turn on the eve owners and tell them to suck it up or look after themselves.

So I have to question why some, after they are satisfied, are putting down others who are not. If they have what they want and have nothing positive to add then just go somewhere else.

I am very happy with the new Sense UI and 911 fix for Android 1.5 on my HTC Magic.

That said, I want to thank all the people who fought to make this happen ...

Many of us reading these forums sent emails or called Rogers. Less of us contacted the Ombudsman's office. There were a few really dedicated people who set up blogs, contacted media sources, etc. to raise the profile of the lack of support/uprade. In particular, I want to thank these people. Without their hard work, I am sure than an upgrade would not have been forthcoming. (It seems that many of the "decision makers" at Rogers were completely unaware of the expectations of their customers.)

RogersMary has been to conduit for Rogers to communicate back to this forum. I appreciate her candor, concern and professional approach. She collected much of the feedback regarding the "upgrade issue" such that (ultimately) - a cloistered group of execs decided to make the "right decision". Mary - my thanks to you and them!

As for the 911 issue - I'm just glad that it is fixed. Ironically, as I was upgrading my Magic yesterday evening, my mother-in-law was in a bad traffic accident. Her car was completely "totaled". Her air bag deployed, and fortunately she is just stiff and has bad bruises. Their were many witnesses who were able to call 911 on their cell phones to get her the help she needed.

Whatever dude. You've had your say and i had mine but I'm not the one that was in here calling people whiners, which is the only reason that I replied to your post.

If your happy with yourself then you enjoy that, i for one am done with the likes of you.
