defective droid? should i exchange?

I've been searching and reading but can't anything exactly like my situation, so here it is...

I've had my phone for a couple of weeks and haven't had so much as a glitch with the thing...until yesterday. I had the phone mounted to the computer to copy some stuff to it and I forgot to unmount it before I pulled the cable. (Oops.) Anyway, later last night the phone went into sleep mode and wouldn't wake up, so I pulled the battery and it fired up but as soon as it booted up, it wasn't recognizing any music/videos on the SD card, so I pulled the battery again and pulled out the SD card and re-inserted it and the phone fired up and saw my music/videos. Then everything's been peachy for the last 24 hours...until about an hour ago. The phone was sleeping and I hit the power button to wake it up but I got nothing. Had to do a battery pull.

Worth mentioning is: the only new app I installed in the last couple of days was "video player" (and I put a bunch of tv show episodes on the SD card) but I just uninstalled it as I'm typing this, just in case.

So, my question is: What do you guys think? Think it's just a little quirk right now? Think I should go to Verizon and ask for a replacement Droid? (I'm still inside my first 30 days but I only have a few days left, if that matters.) And if you think I should swap it out for another Droid, another question: I use MyBackup Pro but if someone can give me some tips about doing a restore from my SD card and what to expect (or not expect), it'd be appreciated.

Try taking the sd card out and putting it back in. I had the same problem and that fixed it.

Remove the card and put it back in (snugly). Also, through the phone, go

Settings----> SD card and phone storage settings---> Unmound SD card---> format SD card. Yes you will lose your photos and videos and music, but this should clear up your problem. I don't think there is anything wrong with your phone.

Yeah, I did that last night and the phone was fine for about 24 hours before it did it again. Can you tell me a little more about your situation?... How long ago did your phone do this? Was it just the one time? If it was more than once, how often do you have to remove/re-insert the SD card?

I don't mind doing this once in a while, but if I have to do it frequently, that's gonna be an issue for me.

It would be good to sort this out before your 30 days is up. After 30 days its refurb time.

I think deft has your solution -- sounds like you just corrupted some data on the SD card. reformatting it should fix the problem.

Okay, I'll definitely try this but I have a dopey question... I'm assuming I should copy everything off the card onto my laptop before I format the card, but do you think that'd be problematic? What I mean is, if there's an issue with the files on the SD card, wouldn't it be a bad idea for me to copy those files right back onto a freshly formatted card?

It's possible you could copy the corruption back and forth but unlikely. Easy way to know for sure though: after reformatting the card try using your phone a bunch before you copy all the files back. Or, if you can, put fresh copies of the music/whatever on your phone to start. If the problem only returns when you copy old files back, then you know one of them is corrupted and borking things up.

Yeah do like Alost said and just copy your media to your laptop, no system directories, no app folders nothing. These will compile once your phone interacts with the SD card after formatting. Your likelyhood of corruption is very low. I had this same problem as you did BTW, but for the record I also routinely unplug without unmounting on the phone or the computer end without problems. Sometimes it does glitch though.

On a side note, Saturday night is the best time to get some help. You forgot what forums you're on. We're all nerds here. :-D

I would first try to mount the Droid to your PC again and properly unmount it by clicking the "Remove mass storage device" in the PC tray, and then unmount it by pulling down the notification bar on the Droid.

Doing this process properly may resolve it.

Also, im wondering if a faulty battery could be causing the problem.

Open your Voice Dial app (NOT the Voice Search app!) and say "Open Battery Info."

A special battery info screen will appear that gives more info about the battery than Battery Info screen in the settings.

If the battery is bad, it will tell you so.

Also, you can say "Open SD card." Some basic SD info is in there.

You guys are awesome! If you only knew the day I had; between waking up sick, getting the worst haircut of my life, then having a cable snap on a cable machine at the gym and narrowly miss my head, a non-functioning phone is the last thing I needed

Steve: I tried mounting and unmounting properly but haven't tried checking the battery info yet. As soon as the copy/paste from the SD car is done, I'll try that, but I'm still gonna format the card anyway. Can't hurt, right?

Okay guys, so I formatted the SD card on Saturday night and kept all my music/videos off the phone and it's been working perfectly ever since. (Thanks again!) Then this morning, I was streaming Slacker Radio and updating some of my apps and the phone froze and shut itself off. So I hit the power button and it turned on and booted up...But I'm a little concerned with the issues I've had the last couple of days. I understand that these things are not perfect and the occassional freeze-up or the rebooting itself once in a while is a fact of life but...I dunno. Maybe today's boo boo is just a little close in proximity to the SD card issues I had this week. What do you guys think?

It sounds like your phone is on the verge of exploiding like mine did...TAKE IT BACK!!!
Naaaa...I have heards the slacker app has caused some issues draining battery and freezing phones, I wouldn't worry to much about that. Take it easy for a few days, try not downloading any new apps and see how the phone acts , sometimes unstable apps will make your phone act wacky.

If the phone is fine (no resetting) then keep it if not exchange it. Every phone will act up once in a while it doesn't always mean you got a lemon its just the nature of the beast.

yeah, that's what i'm thinking - that it was probably just a quirk that's bound to happen once in a while. before these guys helped me figure out that i had an sd card issue this weekend, i was thinking it was an app conflict so i got rid of all unnecessary apps. and i just put my music and videos back on the sd card, but new/clean copies of them.

i guess i'll just keep an eye on it. thanks.
