Hello All...

I know this is just a case of "I am rationalizing my decision and wanted to talk it out"...but please, humor me

I have now had the HTC 3vo since release day and I have decided to return it and wait for the GS2. I really, really like the 3vo but i don't LOVE it. I don't know what I expected coming from a rooted CM7 EVO4g but I am not blown away. The phone is fast...but I guess I expected faster? People on reviews talk about the GS2 like it is absolutely BLAZING. I know, I know..how much fast can one expect to browse from screen to screen or load apps, etc? I still see some not 100% smooth scrolling on some of the 3vo like I expected. Every video I've seen on the GS2 seems to indicate that it doesn't suffer from any lack of smoothness.

In the end it came down to 3d/HTC vs. Thin/Light/AMOLED...cause those seem to be the only major differences. I am not a huge fan of Samsung's Touchwiz and think that Sense is better but I am willing to try...I can always root too!

3d is very cool but ultimately I think it is a gimmick..and not cool enough to make up for the size/speed/screen of the GS2....so here I come samsung!

Leodoc, you and I are in similar shoes, except, I fell from 3vo love before I purchased it. I had been researching and following the forums on it for weeks prior to launch as was quite excited for launch day. Then came all the poor reviews and I pulled out. I could care less about 3d, but I do care about the phone being a good phone. Second is internet speed and connection and that seemed to get poor reviews as well. So I went over to my next set of watch and wait phones.... the Photon 4G and the Samsung Within. I am also leaning towards the Samsung, but I am still concerned that they have not fully fixed their GPS problems. Touchwiz 4 does seem to address previous gripes. Now it is a wait and see thing. They both seem to be releasing around July.

Rico, once you had it in hand, what was it that made you change your mind?

Well, I played with it for a few minutes and it just didn't feel like much of an upgrade from my EVO running CM7 and I hated the sense rotating menu, it was too floaty. But the killer was the camera, the dual monster on the back, hated that too. I am just not sold that 2 5mp lens are better than 1 8mp lens. I have no use for 3d.

I understand and completely agree.... I wonder how many others feel exactly this way.

I am glad that I am not alone in any of this now! 3vo looked great but a I started hearing about the Photon and Within, I wanted to wait it out. I love sense as well and have heard bad things about touchwiz and Samsung's update timeframes. I will want to see them all 3 next to each other and go from there. Anything stand out about the Photon to you guys though?

well, the photon does have a dedicated camera button and a kickstand that i like. It also has IMO the better processor. on the down side, it does not record in 1080p and the battery life is rated lower. The screen I think is a wash, the photon has higher resolution but the GS2 has a brighter and less power hungry screen. But this is all just speculation at this point because there are no photon's out in the wild yet.

I agree, the kickstand has been awesome on my EVO, I have used it more then I ever expected to. The dedicated camera button has been lacking on all smart phones IMO, why would they not add that? I also like that the GS2 has the Gorilla Glass over the screen, not a huge deal but it does help.

I have never owned a Samsung phone and have heard some knocks on them, but I do like Motorola, and also heard that their signal strength seems to be stronger... So many things to think about! LOL

i feel the same... i tried it on a sprint shop (on novato, CA)
i don't think it runs as fast as my old captivate with OCLF. Also i tried the 3D and i didn't like it...

the 3d photos are awful, at least the spiderman game is not THAT bad (still bad)

what i didn't like more than anything was that i was expecting it to be blazing fast... it has a DUAL CORE processor man, it should fly on my hands and it was... dunno... not slow but not smooth either

i don't know if that's clear enough hahah but i won't pay a lot and spend 2 years with something i'm not 100% sure about

Can someone tell me what this Nexus 3 is? Is this phone supposed to be on par with the Evo 3d and Within? Didn't the Nexus just come out a few months ago on Sprint? What's the word on this? I'm a little confused.

The nexus 3 is vaporware. It is rummored to be the next superphone coming out arround holloween. But there is always a better phone on the way....

agreed on most points here...the feel of the phone is just not great...its fast but not "smooth"...most people know that feeling.

Rico said it best as far as I see it...it just doesn't feel THAT much better than evo4g on CM7.

That being said...i have "30 days"...havent returned it YET but it is just a matter of time =]

When I first heard about the E3D, I was excited, but not as excited as I was for the Evo 4G. I then saw that it didn't have the best reviews, so I stopped wanting it. So then I heard that there was going to be a Samsung Galaxy S II on Sprint, and I was pretty excited about that, because I've seen a lot of positive things about it everywhere. Turns out that it's gonna be the Samsung Within on Sprint. So I look at the specs, and sure enough, it's pretty amazing! I thought it made my Evo look like complete crap. So now, for the past three days, I've been trying to find out as much information as I can about the Within, just like how I was when I first found out about the Evo. :D I'm pretty excited!

EDIT:
*Facepalm* Here's the link to the second post I made (About how excited I was about the Evo 4G):

I was in the same boat, all ready to buy my evo 3d and I even had it in my hands at best buy but could not pull the trigger.

Now I am waiting for the Photon or S2.

To be honest, I will most likely get the one that comes out first.

i only have 3 problems with the photon, forgot to mention im returning my evo3D for problems with wimax..i get fast downloads 9 to 10 mbs average & 14 mbs peak in newyork but now theres a problem with wimax thats either the phone or network the speaker is also another problem & the no 1080p. okay back to photon, so the photon cant have a pentile matrix screen if i am to get it, it has to be able to root & hopefully the xda dev's can find a way to have it record in 1080p since it only does 720p. other than that i really dont care about the bluetooth being 2.1 where as the evo3D has bluetooth 3.0. i was also hoping that i would be able to remove sense & install CM7 because the damn sense3 UI takes up nearly half of my 1GIG RAM! thats crazy! that might be a reason as to why it gets lower scores than the galaxy 2, the more things is stores in ram the faster it can access things right?

Seems like most that had the EVO 3D in here never had the intention of keeping the phone.

I absolutely am happy with the 3D. Cant believe someone would say that the 3D photos or videos are bad...thats crazy, any one I have shown the Go 3D Youtube video to on the 3D says its incredible.

I'd look at the Within, but I always prefer Sense and HTC.

+1
I narrowed down my new smartphone choices to the SG2(within) or the Photon. I had to get a new one few days ago so picked up a new 3vo off Craig's and really like it a lot, and this coming from my Evo 4G.
I will be very interested in seeing the Within, and Photon, but they would have to be head & shoulders better than the 3vo for me to switch. Hopefully that's the case though.
