A number of people here have suggested that "whiners" like me would never be happy, and/or have asked what would make me happy.

It would make me happy if everything that happened this weekend happened as it did, with the exception of suspending my data plan until and unless I update.

There is apparently not yet a reliable way to update the phone using Windows 7, Linux, and Mac OS. Yes, I am aware there are "work arounds" for Windows 7, but I shouldn't have to do "work arounds". I am aware that there is the so called "file to SD" option, but I also see people posting that this option doesn't always work properly and can lead to bricking. I am also aware of the special SD cards Rogers claims to be shipping out to those who ask, which take 3 business days.

Because of the lack of support for those of us NOT on Windows XP or below, we will have our data cut off until Rogers gets us a reliable way to update.

I'm not making this complaint just for me, I'm not selfish. I could try the Win7 workaround, and maybe be successful, and then say "screw the rest of you" while playing with Sense UI. However, there are lots of users on Linux and Mac OS who will still be screwed. Not fair for them.

And I can't help but wonder... if, as RogersMary says, the data is being turned off to make sure 911 calls go through, why didn't they turn off our data instantly the day they sent out the text message about the bug? If telling us to turn off GPS them was fine, why isn't it fine now? Sorry, doesn't make sense. Either they only just figured it out now (in which case they should have shut off data last night when they sent the text message about the update), or it isn't really the reason for cutting off data.

As for my "Big Brother" reference, like I said in my last post, there are two kinds of people in the world, those who are ok with the "benevolent dictator" and those who are not. Your brains are wired a certain way, and I am likely not going to be able to change your mind. However, I'd hate to live in a world with a majority of people who think this way because it is seldom confined to only one area of daily life. It gets extended elsewhere... like police searches.

What do I want? I want Rogers to just say "Hey guys, here's the great new bug fix, and the Sense UI we promised." End of story. Just the carrot, no stick. With the exception of people who have rooted, who _wouldn't_ want the benefits of the update? I WANT this update, I just don't like being threatened in to doing it. But like I said, if the real reason for cutting off data is so 911 calls will connect, why didn't they do that the moment they discovered the 911 bug?

Totally agree with this. People who are having technical issues with the upgrade should not have their data cut off. If its a huge legal concern for rogers, they should just get them to agree to some sort of waiver in which the customer guarantees they will turn off their GPS.

As for the rest of it...(some repetition here) its a safety/lawsuit issue. Do you really think there's some dude in a suit, stroking a cat in the OotP saying "Yeeeessss...let's cut off their data...Muuhhhaahhhaaahhaa!" They didn't cut off data until now because cutting off data pisses people off and they wouldn't be doing it now unless they had to (and I'm assuming they exposed themselves to some risk by not doing it sooner). Really, a free month of data for everyone... those evil bastards! They spend a bunch of money (i'm assuming) getting htc to build a 2.1, then they spend a bunch of money upgrading our dreams, and now their spending a bunch of money on free data to compensate people who have to update to fix a safety issue with their phones... the nerve!

Seriously though, Rogers has it's issues (i.e. the hassles I and others had to go through to get my/their magic upgrade) and this issue could have probably been handled better but I am (at least for the moment) a customer who feels he's being well treated by his carrier.

As for the people with rooted phones... it sucks, I agree. Maybe you can get in on the waiver deal I proposed but did you really expect rogers to go out of their way to accommodate you?

mjschmidt & greatbigdog thank you soooo much for all of the effort you put into pushing rogers for updates. I really do appreciate it. On this issue however (aside from people with tech issues) I think you both need to just step back and take a breath.

Lastly, cdstewart I'm rooting for you dude(no pun intended). I have no help to offer but I really hope your phone isn't bricked (I know this is the wrong thread but I just wanted to throw that in there).

So is Rogers implying that a data connection is required for E911. What happens if someone is at home connected via WiFi and dials 911 with gps on. Turning off their data package is not going to prevent a data connection. How about somebody who has their data turned off thinking that E911 works without it.

So either Rogers is luling customers into believing that they are safe when Rogers turns off the data connection or they have in place a system that requires a data connection to work and their customers do not know this.

How can this happen, well my daughter has my old dream. She just popped her sim card into it to use and she doesn't have a data plan. She uses this as her home phone and connects via WiFi, since she is not the registered owner with Rogers she didn't get a notice from Rogers about problem and wouldn't even know anything about it if I didn't say anything.

Its sucks but no one can blame Rogers for not supporting them. Its clear every step along the way that if you root your phone you're on your own. The carrier isn't going to help (nor should they), the ROM developer will help to the best of their ability but are under no legal obligation to do so. When I rooted my Dream I knew that if I bricked it I was SOL, if there was another problem (i.e. in ability to load a required patch) I was SOL. Was the risk I was prepared to take.

Would be no different if you bought a Dell PC loaded with Win7 and then scrubbed the drive and loaded another operating system. If that OS screwed your hardware and you wanted it covered under warranty Dell would be well within their rights to tell you to sod off.

Rogers is turning off the DATA so that 911 can be dialed! The problem was with GPS and DATA.... If they turn off the DATA = no 911 bug.. Safety always comes before a few upset people. I don't know why some people are so upset..... geezz there are more people the don't know to much about these phones so turning the DATA off is the best way to make sure people can dial 911... 911 is more important then DATA.. With the DATA off they know everyone can call 911 since not everyone turned off there GPS.... I would imagine by Monday they will be doing the updates for people at the Rogers locations.. Its very smart what they did... Safety 1st...

If turning Data off stops the bug and allows safe calling to E911, why didn't they turn data off the same time they sent out the message about the 911 bug?

You can't say in one breath that they didn't do it then because people would be pissed, and then in the next breath say it's a safety issue.

It's either a safety issue or it's not.

If it's a safety issue they should/would have turned it off immediately until they had the fix ready. If it was okay to ask people to turn off GPS then, but leave data on, why is suddenly not okay?

Rogers didn't explain the data being turned off as a safety issue (to allow for 911 calls) until after some of us complained loudly about it.

So if Rogers is turning off data to disable the "E" part E911 that means that a data connection is required for E911 to work. Sounds kinda fishy to me but OK if they say so. Just glad that Im finding out now rather than on the phone with 911 and getting "but sir, you need to enable your phones data as well as your gps before we can find you."

I agree with you on this issue from rogers, htc or whoever is involve.

It is a good move for rogers, even they didnt do many things right before.

Some people just not happy with anything from beginning.

Im waiting for 6am to see if they actually follow threw and disable data. If they do there is going to be an uproar im sure of it

I did the upgrade last night and have data this morning. I suspect that there is some sort of sniffer that lets them know the update has been done.

Overall, I am very pleased with the situation although I too would have appreciated a bit more notice and solutions for Linux users but....hey they seem to be getting into Android gear. Here in Montreal now my data speed has gone over 3. Don't know if that has something to do with rebooting the data or not.

All my apps had to be updated this morning. BTW I used MyBackupPro before the update and it restored everything (over 50 apps) except gTasks. Even the paid apps I have were restored.

The SenseUi is nice.

well they did say even if we did update we would lose data for up to 24 hours. I think they were just bull shiting because its a breach of contract to force an update on us at the expensive of our data. It was just a scare tactic

The day isn't over yet so we'll see what happens with data.

So far I still have data but not too confident. I ran the 1.5 Sense ROM in December, very nice but I wanted the 1.6 goodness. So I have no intention of downgrading back to 1.5. And especially because of the HTC Sync that the update seems to require. I like my USB driver just the way it is and don't want to go through what Sync did back in December. I have no use for that app.

I text'd a reply to the update notice that I'm already on a 911 fixed 1.6 ROM and don't want the 1.5 Sense ROM. We'll see if they bully me into the 1.5. They had to do what they did even though every backyard developer and mainstream provider already fixed this problem a while back. But I will not accept being locked down even harder than the original ROM, perfected SPL nonsense. That seems to be more important to the providers than actual functionality. I depend on some 1.6 specific apps and don't want to give them up.

I've seen a few people ask about the 1.6 ROMs and since it is 911/GPS fixed if we're ok and not be subject to the threat of cutoff. Other questions were answered by rogers mary but this one wasn't so that isn't a good sign.

So Rogers, leave my perfectly fine and well behaved 1.6 ROM alone. An leave my data plan alone, I paid for it so expect it to work past the 24hr blackout.

How about you come up with a more creative response. I have read the contract and i know what i am talking about.
Respectively no you don't and it has nothing to do with creativity but rather the reality of the legal agreement you've entered into. You insist that Rogers can't update the phone and that you'v read the contract, how do you explain this?
