1. the ability to disable 'long press' on the gingerbread keyboard.

i will never use foreign / special keys, and could possibly be trusted to have the ability to turn them on / off at my own discretion.

2. a google maps app that doesn't upload data when not in use.

honestly, why is google search and google maps using data when I've used neither app in months!?

The ability to have my phone come out of sleep when I receive a text message like when I receive phone calls. I know there are apps that do this like SMSAwake or SMS Popup. But it'd be a nice integrated feature.

Google could give it a setting of like 5, 10, or 15 seconds out of sleep. So just long enough for you to pick up the phone and respond if you're close but not long enough to drain the battery. I have an Application called SMSAwake (no space) and it works just like this. It's wonderful to not have to press the power button every time I want to reply to a Text.

i need it disabled as there is next to no difference between a short and long press on my galaxy s.
hence special characters are always suggested, slowing my typing as it needs constant correction when i will never have a use for them.

so our favourite super profitable, first world company is not complicit in hosting ~50 malware apps in some vast criminal exercise.

i thought google gave a ... about end user services!?

and while im on the subject, how about complying with taiwanese law?
if an app is worth keeping you would hardly be asking for a refund within the week.

Also, I would like a way to have my Text Messages sorted differently when I sent a single text to multiple people. I'd like them sorted into their individual recipients sections instead of being sorted into a "group message".

I've used Android for the past 2 years on a couple of phones.... have come the conclusion its nae good. I'm going back to my lowly Non-Android W910i... at least it could do the above!!!

Back up app data
At the moment there is no way to backup the data that is stored on your device. So if you do a factor reset you will lose the data for the apps. (Non-Rooted device). So a service to backup all app data to the cloud/sd card is needed (remove the security for this). Also I don't like the backup API that google has for apps.

While backup to the cloud would be nice, as a bare minimum we should be able to backup/restore any app's data to/from SD card, for *any* app, regardless of how it's programmed. It should be right there under Manage Applications with the 'clear data' button. Seriously, on what planet is it considered good practice to provide a totally destructive 'clear data' button without also giving us the option to save and recover that data? If the only data management option my desktop PC had was 'delete everything and start again' every time i made a mistake i would get even less work done than i currently do.

I currently use (the fantastic) titanium backup for this purpose but it requires root - i dread the day when i have an unrootable android device.

Who said that was the only reason? I just think it's a good one. I'm from the Palm world, where we could back our devices up completely to the desktop - this Android cloud thing is unacceptable to me. We're discussing that issue here, backing up app data, not flashing ROMs, themes, or anything else - all of which I take full advantage of.

What i want is: A version of the market with all of the garbage (thousands of crappy themed clocks, wallpapers, and assorted drivel) filtered out.

I use AppBrain as a sort of filter, it's better organized than the market, at least.

Oh, one other minor thing. The way widgets are handled: some widgets have half a dozen (or more) sizes, do they all need to be listed individually? Can't we pick the widget from a list and *then* pick the size?

There is a great program for this, if you're rooted. AppWidgetPickernicely organizes all of your widgets into a list just as you desire, but again, you have to be rooted to use it.

Yeah, i often use appbrain when i'm on a pc, but when i'm on my phone i use the market app, and it's like trawling through an open sewer at times.

Yes, it does, I'm having a hard time figuring out why it isn't being used natively in the Android platform. Most ROM developers install it into their ROMs by default now.

Personally, I would prefer to say which app shall ask permission to communicate and to set up how they should communicate. At least I want to see when and how much they communicate. (I did not find the appropriate app for that so far.)

- give access to per-app stats of how they use resources (energy, wifi, data communication).

- the options in the calendar application are by far insufficient. We need something like jorte by default.

- I can see that now the maps application can pre-load maps to be used offline but we cannot do offline search nor calculate routes between two points. I used to have much better on my Nokia.

- I don't like the cloud. I would like to sync my calendar with my PC without google knowing my agenda.

You second point is already available, at least on the EVO.

I dont like jorte, I find the stock calendar app fine.

It is an important feature, I find Google's auto sync fails as you can't check what's backed up or not

1. Add ability to log in as root
2. Have a Cli terminal
3. Be able to use linux aps
4. Have an update interface like synaptic package manager
5. Have a boot loader so you can try the next Android without flashing your existing OS, ie allow dual booting. If for example you have 2.1 on your device and want to see if 2.2 will work, dual boot with 2.2 until you find out if it works, then eliminate 2.1 and use 2.2.
6. Provide a list of chips each version works with, ie Armv6, Armv7, etc
7. The ability to place your SD card in a computer and download aps to it, then install them to your device.
8. The ability to take an image of the device and save it to usb, Sd, or your computer. If you lose or break your device, you can get a new device of the same model and install your backup image, and have eerything back just the way you had it.
