Whats it mean and is it good or bad
Should I do it or is it already done for me?

Yeah, someone definitely needs to learn to Google.

Rooting simply implies granting superuser/admin permission. By itself, rooting your phone doesn't actually do anything (other than voiding your warranty). Seeing that you have a HTC thunderbolt, it's probably not rooted.

The dangerous bits come after rooting your phone. "With great power comes great responsibility". You now have more control over the phone that a normal user does, which allows you to do things that can potentially harm your phone.

I usually recommend users NOT to root their phone unless if they have a good reason to. One common reason for rooting is to remove bloat apps that otherwise cannot be uninstalled. However, always do proper research before removing anything. For example, Google Talk is actually necessary for the Market to function properly even though they don't appear to be directly related. Uninstalling Google Talk will result in not being able to download any apps from the Market, and there's no simple way to fix it.

Just in case that you didn't notice, I did type up an entire passage for your pleasure. Also, give a little thought about just how many people before you might have asked the same question. You are not the first one to ask, and definitely not the last one to ask either. Is it that hard to imagine that some of us might just get a little grumpy after answering the same question for the 51st time? While it's not explicitly stated in the rules, it's common practice to perform a search (either on Google or in the forum itself) to find if the answer has been answered before. In fact, some forums actually enforce this practice to the point of temporarily banning offending users.

The reason, why people root their mobiles, is;

Installing custom firmware/custom ROM(Updates the Android version, or makes your phone "more powerful")

Overclocking(Make your processor run faster)

Disabling ads in games and apps

SDFix(makes your SD-card read/write faster)

And removing system apps, which is the most minor reason, why people root.

I do recommend rooting your phone!

Formatting the internal system memory isn't something that people usually "accidentally" do. What were you trying to do? Were you trying to flash a new rom? Do you have a copy of the original rom?

Sorry you feel that way. These forums are actually one of the most civil and friendly forums on the internet.

We are a multicultural, multiligual forum that support the currently largest mobile operating system in the world by mostly it's members and volunteers. One of the things that is never tolerated is the abuse of other members as you find so common in other discussion groups. Any instances of it are quickly dealt with.

Perhaps snapper.fishes could have been a little more diplomatic in suggesting you search for an answer before asking a question that has been asked so many times before, but I am sure there was nothing implied in his response to belittle you.

It might have been helpful to know that you had already searched for the answer to your question and were confused by the large amount of varying responses you found. That also is very common and we clarify those answers all the time as well. We are here to help.

I think if you give Android Forums another chance with an open mind and no preconceived ideas of how you think it should work, you might be pleasantly surprised to find that we do care about your questions and would like you to remain an active member.

This to me sounds like rooting isn't for you...in fact most people don't need to root anyway

I guess I was just so shocked by the other response that I neglected to read further. I'm sorry Snapper that I neglected to thank you last night, I was kinda disturbed at being treated like that. I've been in many forums over the years and never experienced something like that before.

There was another post before that one that was quite rude.
Seems that person has decided to delete it.
(Brave soul coulda left it for all to see, just sayin!)
You will see in Snappers post he starts out agreeing that I need to Google. That was in response to the link posted in the first answer I got.

I have Googled it and I just didn't understand what I read. That was the only reason I asked. I just didn't want to do something to my phone that was bad. What the deleted post consisted of was a animated link to Google that explained how to use Google and a sarcastic "There, now that wasn't so hard was it?" at the end. Not too nice for a first time user to get in response to a question. Now maybe you will understand my response a bit better.

Thanks to everyone else who KINDLY took the time to explain it in a way that I was able to understand with less techy terms than they have on Google.
I do have an open mind and I'm willing to stay and learn. I love my Thunderbolt, and tell all my silly Iphone using friends what they are missing out on.​

Aaah, that explains a lot. Actually, it was a moderator who deleted that post. As I said, that sort of thing is not tolerated and dealt with quickly.

Anyway, back to the original purpose of your post ... The only reason to root your phone is if there is a reason to root your phone. I know that sounds like a circular argument, but rooting isn't really necessary. I would guess that the vast majority of Android users never root their phone and are quite happy with it. I had my Nexus One for over a year before I rooted and still I am running the stock Android OS rather than any custom rom.

Now, if you have a specific reason to want to root, by all means go ahead. There will be plenty of folks here ready to help you through the process. I'd recommend not rooting though until there is a reason to.

Youve been on many forums and thats the first time someone gave you a "let me google that" With that much forum experience you should have a sense of humor and a bit thicker skin...I doubt whoever posted that meant it to belittle you, they probably were just trying to be funny

Looking back on my own comment, the first line was probably a little too harsh and unnecessary. I will keep that in mind in the future. Regarding the "let me google that for you" link, the mods had a discussion about it a while ago. I guess they decided not to allow the practice any longer.

I wouldn't do it. Especially if you do banking on your phone it isn't secure.

Not so sure about that. None of the malicious apps so far actually requires your phone to be rooted.

hi!!! ive been reading this forum for a while now and ill have to say you guys are the best, i rooted my ascend took all the junk out got icarus and im in love with my baby all over again!!!! problem is, i was trying to hook up my wife`s ascend and after i rooted and got titanium bck up i accidentally removed the contacts apps and she was not able to make calls,so i tried to restore the phone to factory setting but the phone got the new update 2.2.2,it fix the contact problem but now i can`t root it using the same method i use for mine(z4root) ive been looking for a step by step on how to root a 2.2.2 and all i see kind of got me a lil confuse,i just need to be pointed in the right direction......im not an expert but i am good at following directions,pls my wife is reaally jealous and i fear for my phone. help.

If z4root doesn't work, try Super One Click Root.

Gingerbreak is working to root the 2.2 on the Ascend. Any more Ascend questions come over to the Ascend forum and ask away! Lots of helpful people there!
