Root New Micro SD - How to set it up?

Good evening all.

I have bought myself a new Micro SDHC 16gb and wish to use it in my rooted desire. I'm currently running GV and using 2 gb card.

I presumed that using a new card would be fairly easy so started reading. However at some point I got confused and it all became a bit mad in my head. Leading to me having my old card in the phone today but all my apps having dissappeared and nothing showing on SD card!

An hour ago I restored to last backup and it's all working as normal again.

So, I thought I'd start again but with some advice first.

The new card has been partitioned but nothing else (haven't applied the original Goldcard image to it yet).

I figured that I would need to partition it, then goldcard it, then copy files from 2gb card to 16 gb card. Is this anywhere near correct? I'll stop here and see what you people think rather than go into more details. Then go from there.

That sounds about right. You should make sure you copy everything, including hidden/system files.

The bit you've not mentioned is how to get your apps onto the ext partition - you won't be able to just copy that partition using a PC. The simplest way is probably to do a nandroid restore when you've copied the data to your card (which will include the nandroid backup). Restoring will restore the apps to the ext partition, after which you should be good to go.

I think, THINK, simply doin a Nandroid restore will give an md5 error, but I'm not sure. I would fresh install anyway, but I did keep a lot of data I couldn't afford to lose on my card.

Don't see why it should produce an error - I've copied nandroids to my laptop, deleted them from the card, copied them back and restored. Only difference here is that it's a different card, but I don't think that should matter.

You're right of course, you could do a clean install of the ROM, reinstall apps, and restore data that you want. In fact if it's the same ROM a clean install then a full Titanium restore should in principle work.

I'm beginning to distrust my card, so may be trying all of this out for myself before long - then I'll be able to talk from experience rather than theory

Ok, can I copy the files to my pc via the USB cable? I tried this last night (including hidden files) but when I trying to move them, lots had problems (file name too long and the file name seems to be gibberish - akin to wingdings). Maybe they're not meant to be copied for some reason.

a number of folders are not copied over including:
Clockworkmod
Android
.android_secure
and some others

Does this sound right?

I can copy them over to my PC one at a time but when I check the Removable disk drive size it's bigger than the folder containing it all on PC. I have triple checked that hidden files are "shown" prior to this.

Should I go ahead and set out to use the new card as described in my previous post and just use the files that have been backed up?

When transferring the files to new card, how do i go about this? Boot phone with old card, unmount card, mount new one then transfer files?

Hmm, I don't know why you are having problems copying (though I'm not a PC, so haven't direct experience of doing this to Windows). The gibberish filename doesn't sound good. I'd certainly make sure that the folders you've named are copied - some of those are important.

Trying to change the card with the phone running sounds a challenge, since you need to remove the battery to get at the card. Don't think I'd try it! What I'd do is insert the new card, boot into recovery rather than booting the phone, mount the card from the mounts and storage menu in clockworkmod and copy data to the card that way.

Once the card is loaded you can try a nandroid restore (you are already in recovery), or if there's a problem (or you prefer) wipe and reboot, then reinstall apps or restore from Ti once you've booted.

You could try just filling the card then booting the phone without any restore/wipe/reflash. I don't know what will happen if the phone is expecting stuff to be on the ext partition but it's actually empty. Maybe it'll just boot but those apps won't be there, in which case you can install Ti and just restore the missing apps. But no promises.

Remember that you've still got the old card, and if that has up to date backups on it you should be fine whatever.

Well I followed your advice Hadron, and it has worked a treat. So big thanks there. (Thanks too to IB for your comments, all feedback/help is always appreciated).

Instead of copying the old SD card via usb whilst running the phone normally, I mounted it through recovery to see if it brought better results. It did, no folders were missing this time though there was still the issue of a few gibberish files unable to copy.

Your point about changing the card with the phone running is a great one. I laughed a fair bit at that and my own stupidity for not forseeing such an obstacle!

Anyway, ended up doing the nandroid restore through cwm and it's back to how it was 24 hours ago except with a big wedge of memory to fill with Spotify's best tracks and my old PS1 games.
