Tiered data - how much *is* actually 2GB of use?

2 gigabytes = 2048 megabytes

if your 50 megabytes a day is normal usage, we get 50 (MB usage) x 28 (1 month in days) = 1400 megabytes in a 4 week period

With heavy usage of Google Music or Pandora or whatever, I'd expect you to maybe come close to the 2GB limit, but it'd take some pretty heavy use

Now if we were to add in Netflix or HBO Go, and use them frequently, I really don't think 2GB a month would be enough. I'm really suspicious of the timing of the release of Netflix and the eminent coming of tiered data plans from Verizon.

Tiered and LTE are a contradiction in premise.

The faster the connection, the more data folks tend to use.

Now with LTE, higher res Flash and Netflix, a lot of folks will EASILY pass 2gb and VZW are BANKING on this.

The data usage that VZW quotes does NOT consider the future usage trends due to the new media and LTE noted above. Could probably bet the farm VZW are using convenient ignorance and knows better.

Cloud media should also be added to the list of newer tech that will increase data usage, going forward.

IMO 2gb is nothing, even with wifi at home I go over that. If you plan on using Pandora or similar services on the road and have a tiered plan be careful. My guess is verizon knows this and if the rumored plans are true has every intention of making a fortune off of overage fees.

Agreed. I use about 6-8gb per month using wifi at home and 3g anywhere wifi is unavailable. I usually stream music and videos and do my fair share of browsing.

Hmm... I am not so sure on that yet. I know Blackmanx left Verizon but he said that we would only be grandfathered in if we didn't use an upgrade. I trust him, he has been a very reliable source.

Ive seen recent articles stating that even after renewing and upgrading you will still have unlimited. But those werent from verizon themselves. And i could see them using 4g as a way to ungrandfather you. If they are NOT going to grandfather you in after renewals and upgrades, i could see alot of people switching to say. . . tmobile. I know as much as i love the coverage, speed and service i would switch.

And for my data usage, without pandora or the like. Ill average between 2gb and 3gb, when i was using pandora on the regular i would average 5gb and sometimes as much as 7gb or 8gb. And as with most i have wifi at home.

I'm currently on 24/30 days in this billing period and have used 2.539 gb. I do not use netflix but do watch YouTube (apx 1/2 hour per day) and also stream music (pandora, slacker etc.) and do quite a bit of web surfing. 2 GB was a lot a year ago but this tiered system will be revised as people will start complaining when they (and their kids) start going over.

I watch most of the videos were I can connect to wifi so it would probably be less than 1/2 a gb if needed.

The pricing is ridiculous as well and I would imagine there will be a carrier that will use unlimited data promotions to lure people from other carriers.

SO true!! In other words, if you don't get grandfathered into unlimited by tonight, you're SCREWED.

In order to track my data usage, I use the bloatware VZW put on my Incredible.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vzw.hss.myverizon

I have quick access to most all of my account, and I can track everyone on my family share plan, including data, minutes and texts. It also has a widget that will display your data usage and the number of days in your plan. I can't get easier.

Holy smokes!! Are you sure?
I would double check your numbers. That doesn't seem right even for high usage in just 7 days.

Yeah I dialed #data and verizon sends a text message with the total data usage in kb. Right now it's at 4416427KB. That's 4.2GB, after 8 days now. I've been watching a few hours of youtube videos every night since I got the phone though, so that's probably what's using up so much data.

i just checked mine; using around .4 gig a month right now mostly surfing the internet; occasionally using tune in radio, and whatever updating and syncing is going on.

but would i take a 2 gig plan for less than what i'm paying for unlimited? no. the reason is that the net evolves, and data usage is only going in one direction at this point. 2 gig now might be a week's consumption in two years.

guess i'll be sticking with my current phone until a better deal emerges. not interested in overage charges.

Make sure you're using wifi whenever possible

I got an email from Verizon Wireless yesterday that if I upgrade my Fascinate to a 4G smart phone, I can keep my unlimited data plan, and I can also get unlimited mobile hot spot for additional $30. So I am really tempted to upgrade to Galaxy S II which is coming to Verizon this month.

By the way, I don't stream music and I think it is kind of pointless. All the songs that I like are in my MicroSD card (ripped from my music CDs). I also don't stream video because I have a job, so I won't have time to watch movie during the day. At night when I am at home, I would rather stream video with my Latitude laptop or my Galaxy Tab 10.1 which have much larger screens.....size does matter when it comes to viewing videos. :)

I mostly use my Fascinate for emails, text messages, Twitters, Facebook, Google Plus, VZNavigator and news. My average data usage is less than 2GB for sure.
