Root Japanese HTC EVO Wimax ISW11HT (4G) rooting HELP!?

Hi EVO fans! Was wondering if I could get some help / advice on rooting my EVO. I'm in Japan and I've got a Japanese HTC EVO Wimax (the equivalent of Sprint's 4G). Problem is, I'm pretty sure that it isn't exactly the same as it's North American brother. See below...

So I'm wondering if I could get some help rooting this thing so I can get the latest Android update. Also wondering if rooting and ROM flashing would affect my phone's functionality with my carrier over here (KDDI AU). any and all help much appreciated!

well what is your hboot? power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the bootloader(hboot) screen. what does it say there.

well unfortunately folks over at unrevoked have not rooted that hboot version. but i went and headed over to xda and found this:[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.5 (4/25/11) - xda-developers. you can pm haus and see if he can help you. hope that works out for you. if you do manage to get it root can you post here your results and how you did it.

nice to see that evo has made it overseas.

Got in touch with Haus... No luck. Seems he's still been unsuccessful rooting the AU EVO...

Haus unable (as of this post) to root KDDI AU EVO. Anybody have other suggestions? I've found download mirrors to

BUT, this still doesn't help me root. z4root I've read has been successful only in temprooting. Permaroot apparently not possible due to NAND. Anybody got any answers to this problem?

So I've gone over a few J-forums about this searching for a solution... Seems the Japanese are also perplexed by hboot 2.15. Damn you HTC!!! Anyone got a hotline to the devs at Unrevoked? Need to get their attention on this...

Did you accept the recent US upgrade to 2.3 for the OTA? If so, that is why z4root no longer works. They have not yet found an exploit for the new hboot.

actually xtreme the japanese evo's have a different hboot then the evo's in the us. their hboot is 2.15 so at this point either nobody is working on it or an exploit have not been found yet for it.

I took his mention of the US market as the possibility of him having a US Evo. I wasn't sure though so I thought I would throw it out there

Yeah, it's the Japanese EVO. I was able to use z4root to get a temporary root so I could use Market Enabler to access the US market, but that stopped working after my unsuccessful attempts with unrevoked. I wish I knew how to contribute to the hboot hacking efforts on this phone. The stock firmware is OK though even though we're stuck on 2.2 for now. We get official wifi and USB tethering for free and the Skype integration is sweet (Skype behaves as a normal phone call and is integrated with the dialer)...I just want a custom ROM

Yeah, I want the custom ROM too. Hopefully I'll also be able to use Whatsapp once rooted. And I can't wait to get rid of all the bundled bloatware from AU. What the hell is Peep and why would I need it anyway?!? I don't even use Twitter. (I'm assuming that's what it is essentially, since it's a bird logo and the name is pretty pigeon-headed, just like "Twitter".)

and right out of the box, the first thing i noticed was having two battery packs.
my mind clicked and went 'uh-oh'.

the battery life sucks. god i really hate the battery...

im a downright noob with android and rooting; though i did try... after spending some time reading about it. using unrevoked3, it seems that my 'radio version' was different; and i got stuck there.

i renewed my search string on google to 'htc evo au japan root' and this thread and forum came up. so if you guys still have no luck with it, then im pretty sure i won't be having any as well. but i do appreciate the fact that current info on the matter is here, and i will be following this thread closely, as time permits me.

do you have any suggestions of what i can use and do for the meantime for my battery? is there an app that can really help me some? i have disabled most refreshes for apps that i use, lowered the display brightness as much as i can, disabled wifi/bluetooth/gps/4g-WIMAX and even background data, and removed most apps running by using 'running applications'.

this is my first smartphone, and i thought long and hard about getting an evo... and it was a bit of a letdown to have the battery go like this on me. im pretty sure that if i read up on the specs' good and bad (like i was supposed to) before getting this handset, i would have waited for the galaxy s2 instead. i am ridiculously proud of my evo (all my peers are iphone4 users, and they always look at my screen with wonder), though i try to hide the fact that the battery bleeds like a gutted chicken; and charge it during lunchbreaks in my car. otherwise it would not last me a working day (8 hours plus 3 hours overtime).

though stuck with a two-year plan, i love this evo, and i love android. and i hope that someone out there can find a way for us here in japan. thank you for your work, and more power... for you guys and my battery.

If you just got your EVO, I noticed that you have to fully cycle through the batteries a couple of times to max their power. Fully drain and fully charge. And DO NOT run any app killer as these things suck the life away like a leech on crack. Other than that, there are some extended life batteries available on Amazon for the EVO. A little gaudy though... I'm not too fussed about carrying the spare just in case... My primary battery will usually get me through the day, and I plug in whenever it's convenient. Luckily it's not a big charger! If it's any consolation, I used to be an iPhone user... The battery on those lemons is about the same. I switched to android and never looked back. god I hate crApple. Smartphones in general though drain battery pretty quick. With great power comes great power drain I guess.

As for the root, I've heard a rumor that hboot 2.15 is being worked on... Not sure how reliable this is, but a little hope is better than none at all!

Did you get the free tablet? SMT-i9100. They said the promotion lasts to the end of the month. I am debating getting the EVO vs waiting for the new slider Regza from toshiba IS11T. They don't share much on the processor speeds at the au website. I wish they could activate my original droid or the new droid 3 on a local network. Verizon is getting away with highway robbery at $20/1MB Last Sept. it was a flat rate of $60 for unlimited data (5GB).


Have you used the phone outside of Tokyo much. Will it drop to 3G speeds without too much problem? The monthly plan was 11,100 for a low tier talk plan and unlimited data plus the new phone discount and small fees. This is high with the exchange rate and the 9,500 cancelation fee after a year.

Any ideas if a used EVO is possible to purchase.
