There was an "invite" icon as late as 11PM EDT yesterday on the Home screen. The only way I can think to invite others is to add them to your circle and see the system sends them an invite.
For the moment, until the invite button comes back :
- Make sure you have their gmail address in your contacts (must it be a gamil address??)
- Add them to one of your circles (make an 'invite' one perhaps?)
- Enter a message in your timeline and share it with that circle

I saw a G+ post from a Google employee that said it really isn't so much of a loophole as it is a feature (I'll see if I can find it). Though with them throttling the amount of users joining it makes it tough at times to get in even with an invite.
I'm thinking that is how I git in VIA the loophole of my friend posting. The email notification remains the same as a post notification. Never recieved a "your invited" email. As of this afternoon I've been able to accsess G+
The invite button appears under the "Get Google+ for your mobile device" button on the stream screen (right hand side on the bottom). I had it last night and it disappeared this morning, just keep checking back for it.
Google closed invites again last night. Like Mostly Harmless said, just keep looking under the mobile device every day or evening (i would try random times of the day). They seem to go through faster than sharing a post.
I got invited in this morning and joined without problem. the way my friend did it was to share a post with me. he send the post to my email address (a yahoo one). the e-mail I got had a "log in" button. when I clicked on that it went to my gmail account and I had the join Google+ screen. I joined and was in. I've been at it since this morning and really liking it.
