Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

for those of you who have rooted phones:
You can call normal wireless support (press 1 instead of going to pda/smartphone support) and request a "network refresh". Then you need to powercycle your phone and your should get data back!

I'm trying this right now. Just called rogers.

There's no queue on the normal wireless side, so if you want to speak to a rep this took me literally 1 minute to do.

Edit: Confirmed. It works. Just call rogers and ask for a "network refresh" and you have 2g/3g back on modded firmwares.

Tested on htc dream running cyanogenmod 4.2.13

by the way, those of you who have trouble upgrading should go to howard forums. There's a method to update the phone using a zip file. This one is for the htc dream. I don't know if there's one for magic as well. Good luck!

I did the upgrade on Friday along with everyone else. ( On a TWO day old phone!)

I spoke with the Fido CSR's on Saturday but they didn't have a clue and blathered on about "<csr>unsupported hardware, <me> but I am talking about a data option not hardware. <csr> your data option IS enabled" bla bla.

Sunday night. Still no data.

Here's my convo with Mary FYI. In spite of the Magic probs I think she's a GREAT idea. Comcastic even!

@RogersMary loving all the htc Magic info/updates. Thanks! But did you have to kill data access on my (Brand New) Magic running on Fido?

@TechOttawa Good to hear Andrew! Data would have only been turned off if you didn't update by Sunday, Jan.24

@RogersMary ahh OK - thanks. But I still don't have 3G data access. Worked fine before upgrade. Wifi data works but can't get onto Fido 3G.

Dear IP Fairy - please restore my 3G data. Thanks.

And thank you Rogers for the Sense UI. Can't wait for OTA 2.1 !! Voice recognition is pretty sick.

Granted emotions are running high right now but the contents of this thread have me annoyed and not with Rogers. I'm not being an apologist for their business practices and yes they've done some things to annoy us all but some of what's being said here is just childish whining.
<snip>
... If there's no OTA client with 1.5 then how do you suggest that Rogers preform the upgrade OTA?
<snip>

Thank you for pretending not to be a spokesperson for Rogers.
Not buying it.

princess I am most certainly not a rogers spokesperson or work for them......they are very much my competition and the only reason I used them for personal services is because bell pissed me off to the point I looked elsewhere

do you honestly think anyone affiliated with rogers would have posted about their rooted phone?

Hello Community: Here is one I would love to have your opinions on.

First issue: No 1.6 for Dream

Bought Dream outright locked Rogers phone paid full pop. Asked if I could participate in the swap for the Magic, simple answer no. More detailed answer yes if you sign up for a three year contract. (WTF?)

Rogers states that Dream is essentially a deprecated device. No updates past 1.6 (if that) Only choice according to Rogers themselves is to Root the phone.

Second issue: 911 update - Mandatory

Did not update (reason below) , lost data support at approximately 11:00 am PT Sunday Jan 24. Called Rogers tech support - min 30 min wait. Data outage creates mission critical loss for clients I support, which was the intended purpose for the device in the first place.

RogersMary - "For those who do not download the s/w fix, internet access will be disabled until it has been completed." (WTF?)

Third issue: (unsubstantiated)

As I understand updating the 911 patch includes a command that makes it impossible to root your phone with out bricking it. (see issue 1 above)

Summary: Rogers sold me a phone for $600, won't support it after six months, won't exchange it without me committing to a 3 year term, takes me offline for not updating the 911 patch, the 911 patch will not enable me to root the phone which is the only way I might be able to get any value out of the device.

Is it just me or is this unconscionable?

Hey guys, I just did the update on my magic, everything worked fine but there's something I can't figure out... I must be stupid or something.

Under "settings/Social networks" there is a place to login to facebook, and I have successfully logged in however... I don't see any built in app for facebook... has anybody else noticed this? you can login to it but there's nothing to use it with? :S

yeah I thought about that, but I don't see the point of having that in there at all if there isn't a built in facebook app.

**EDIT**
After installing the facebook app I still have to login even though I am allready logged in via the "social networks" settings. There must be some use for that thing. It can't be there for nothing.

Rogers is Scanning their network.. as soon as they can tell you have done the update your Data will come back on. try a power cycle as well.

I wonder if that means that those of us that have the Dream (Rooted in my case) and Magic will only have to do the update on one of them. Once the network detects that update completed on one (Magic in my case) then the data is available for both.

My daughter has the dream, using it with the data turned off. I'll have to get it from her to try it with my SIM card and data on.

Your contact list will show the last update that the contact posted on their wall. In addition if you view the contact you can see additional information by moving the slider along the bottom of the screen.

Dave, see post# 205, give the suggestion there a try to get your data back.

Well I called Fido this morning with my SIM in my T-Mobile G1, it did not have any data on it either. I called them to do a network reset, she did and my Edge came back up when I recycled my phone.

I then placed the SIM in my Dream with the 1.6 AOSP ROM and I had 3G again.

BTW Rogers was able to pull my profile up, including my pin, even thought I am a Fido customer.

It is probably a Facebook "widget". Widgets don't show in your app list. Long-press on your screen and choose Widgets. Then scroll through and look for a FB widget.

I'm back!!

If you are FIDO user with 1.6 custom ROM do not do any update!

- have your phone turned ON
- Call Fido
- tell them that you don't have data since yesterday
- they'll ask you what phone you have, say HTC Dream or Magic whatever you have
- They'll tell you that there has been some problems, blah blah blah
- tell them that you have applied the update but still no data
- they'll tell you to wait 24 hours
- tell them that you have heard that it could be done immediately if she only did the "Network Refresh"
- she will do it, it's easy for her.
- you will be asked to power down the phone and wait 10 seconds
- power on an there it is, firs Edge and than 3G.

Will it work tomorrow? Ask me tomorrow!

Are you using the same SIM between the two???

From what I understand it is the account that is marked, so if you had your updated Magic up on the net long enough you have been baptized and your Dream will work.

Am I wrong here?
Same SIM being used on the magic and dream. Still have data on both devices this morning and according to my profile on the customer portal rogers still thinks I'm using the dream.

Oh, and happy that you've got your data back.
