backup question

Could you please tell me the best way to back up my phone. The volume button has stopped working, different issue, and before I do anything I guess I should do a backup.

I've only ever charged my phone and worked through the basics so I don't really know my way round the phone very well, I've felt a bit stupid when doing to random searches so please don't confuse me.

Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums dreamz

What exactly are you looking to back up? Photo's and Videos etc should be backed up to the SD Card, so if you want to ensure those are safe, you'll need to copy the contents of the SD Card to the PC. Are you comfortable doing that?

Your apps are associated with your gmail account so providing you link the refurbished/replaced handset to the same gmail account, you'll find the apps will download themselves again when you first connect to the internet.

Your contacts should also be backed up to your gmail account. If you access the gmail account you set the phone up with via a PC, click on "Contacts" in the top left hand side of the page, does it display a list of the numbers on your handset? If not, let me know and I can explain how to back them up for you.

There are some things that you can't backup unfortunately, like app data (game saves/config etc.) and ringtone settings etc. But most of the stuff is backupable.

Does all of the above make sense?

thanks so much for your reply, sorry its taken me so long to respond back.

I'd like to back up as much as possible really, because I'm having problems with the volume and wifi connection I thought a factory reset might help.

I'm ok with copying onto my SD card, I copy photos like this regularly.

My google account contact list is not a duplicate of my phone contacts. I've tried to sync it, from my phone setting menu, accounts and sync but it says sync is currently experiencing problems. Is this the right place to do it or am I missing something obvious??

Only if you are rooted mate.. The security on Android means no app data can be backup unless it implements the backup api, which has flaws in it anyway.

Gingerbread on Desire HD has problems with Wifi. It is a setting they used to determine if it is in a strong enough signal. Your volume key is a bit weird, it could be just your handset itself... not sure if there was anything I read where software has caused issue on this

They will only sync if they are google contacts, not phone or SIM.

To import them to google, open the phone book, hit menu -> Import/Export -> Export to SD Card. You'll be prompted to save to a .vcf file. Mount the phone as an external disk to your PC and copy the vcf file to your desktop.

Open your gmail account on your PC, hit Contacts -> More Actions -> Import then select the file you just copied from your handset. They should now sync with your handset.

thanks so much, I've managed to backup my contacts now, you made it sound so easy!

Is there any fix to the wifi problem? my husband has the same phone and he has no wifi problems (we are on differnt networks).

ok I've just seen the work around for the wifi problem on the known issues page, will try it out.

No problem. There are a few potential fixes for the WiFi issue. You can either assign yourself a static IP address, or turn off 3G whilst using WiFi.
