I have just started using handcent and its a nice alternative to the gingerbread messaging app. However when I get a text it shows up in both apps that I have a message and I have to manually enter each app to get rid of the notification. Is there any way for me to make handcent default?

You'll always get a message in both apps but you need to turn off the notifications within the stock app (as the user posted before me). Remove it from your home screen and add hand cent to the home screen.

So here is the procedure: 1) open stock Messages app>menu>settings>Notifications>unselect all notifications<Settings>Multimedia messages>unselect auto retrieve<<<

Then drag stock messages app widget to trashcan. Replace with Handcent, and go to handcent settings>Custom Style and make it rock...change colors etc.

Thanx! gonna try this now

If i use handcent will SMS backup still work? Does anyone use this with Handcent?
yes, it still works. i dont have "auto retrieve" unchecked in the stock messaging app, but i use SMS backup/restore and handcent with no issues.

Not sure of the experience others have had with Handcent, but me, my husband and my babysitter were using it and we all three had to go with GoSMS instead because we were all having issues with texts not being received.
no problems for me and my wife. all my friends are using it as well and all are working great.
