Root [CDMA] Swype 3.0 on 3vo

Hey guys, this is kind of a fre3vo question so feel free to move it there if you think it shouldn't be it's own thread.

I hate swype 2.5 after having gotten used to the 3.0 beta. I found a way to get rid of 2.5 so I can add 3.0 using fre3v0 (Pocketables Forum - View Single Post - Swype on Evo 3D?). I saw EarlyMon say in the other thread that right now temp-rooting and such is not stable and still very "do at your own risk" at the moment.

I was just wondering exactly how safe is this process? If I follow directions exactly, will I have any trouble with it? I know my way around coding languages and have done stuff like this before, but usually only on supported versions and not stuff quite this new.

TL;DR-- How risky is using fre3vo to get swype 3.0 on my phone?

Since the bat files have come out rooting has gotten better and stickier. You now only have to reroot when you restart your phone. Very stable but still only temp root. And still do at your own risk. I have rooted since possible ablnd quit rooting my phone because it got to be a pain but now that rooting using the various bat files keeps su useable every time I reboot I reroot

Please use XDA, never goodandevo.com, for advice on rooting. They grab stuff without proper attribution and often get things flat wrong. Yes - I'm saying it clear text, in public, that people that follow their advice come here to get squared away more often than I can say.

Yes, the proper way to soft-remove the existing Swype is using the Package Manager and issuing a "pm disable" on a root-enabled terminal window (advise for how to do that properly also on the XDA dev-level forum for the 3vo - or, you can rename the existing /system/app/xxxxx.apk as xxxx.apk.sav to try to block it out that way.

Yes, try the Skype beta.

So if you had to rate from 1-10 how difficult it is to do a temp root to remove swype, and also a 1-10 for how risky it is I'd appreciate it

EDIT: Ps- I only use goodandevo for news, never instructions or anything haha. They just have interesting stuff to look at, I go to more reputable places before risking anything

EDIT 2: Looked at your link, no instructions :/ just a file and an assumption that you know how to use it haha. Like I said I've rooted before but only when it was like a one-click type thing, and this doesn't look quite that easy. Along with your 1-10's, if you could link me to instructions (or type some up yourself) I'd appreciate it

Unzip and double click on bat file as indicated.

Suggest Swype freeze using Titanium Backup is your best bet.

still root is not for everyone yet. This is quite easy and is really self explanatory. you dont need ADB but advise that this can screw up your phone.

Now, general knowledge of adb is a good thing to have and what i have found useful is TB is fully functioning. It will freeze and or uninstall apps you want. they will return on reboot but you can remove them. You can also edit the bat file to rename and push/install the new swipe beta when you run it. Since root is still temp and there is no full root out there, be cautious since you dont have a nandroid to restore. be very careful what you do. and have fun. Also there is a lot of info out there and i am sorry but this is about as much help as i am going to give you

Edit, i uninstalled swipe from tb but u may be able just to upgrade without uninstalling

Also, i registered for beta testing, i used a legit license, beta testing is open, don't ask for the .apk

Yeah I have the legit license as well (I had a Nexus S before, rooting was much simpler lol).

So using this method, if I uninstall it and then reboot then my phone becomes unrooted and back to the way it was just without swype? that'd be the ideal situation, I think I'm understanding that correctly

Or do I have to run the .bat every time or else it will just come back?

Thanks for the help so far, I'm not going to rush into anything, sorry if I'm asking too many questions but I'm not going to do it until I'm confident in what I'm doing lol

If someone could just verify if these steps are correct:

1: Get drivers for 3vo
2: Plug 3vo into computer
3: Run .bat file
4: Wait for phone to reboot
5: Open TB to uninstall Swype
6: Manually reboot 3vo
7: Legit install Swype 3.0 Beta

Is that correct? If so it seems simple enough, I'd be willing to try it out

If you reboot you lose root.
1. Reboot phone to start fresh
2. Make sure usb debugging is turned on
3. Install usb drivers.
4. Run bat and you are rooted.

If your phone reboots during root process something is wrong. It should not reboot. All this is done with phone on

When you reboot you lose root and will have to root again

Use tb to uninstall swype and install swype beta.

When you reboot you lose root

Yes I understand when you reboot you lose root lol.

My question is, is the UNINSTALL permanent? Obviously I lose root when I reboot, but if I gain root, uninstall swype, then reboot, does the uninstall still stick?

EDIT: My number 4 above was assuming that the phone needs to reboot in order to gain root, which I guess may not be true. What I meant was "wait for whatever rooting process to finish"

So again, if the uninstall in permanent, then I'd get root, uninstall then reboot (losing root but keeping uninstall), then I can install 3.0 once I'm unrooted

Just rebooted and swype reverts back to stock. So if you reboot you will have to reroot and reinstall swype

Definitely not worth it if the uninstall doesn't stick, guess I'm waiting for permaroot then

And then I have to wait even longer for CM7 on 3vo!

3vo > Nexus but having all this stuff done already and not having to wait was pretty nice haha

Absolutely. phandroid aims to be the best site out there for Android news. And what does "best" mean? It means we aim to get the news out there first. We vet the stories before publishing to make sure they are true. If we hear it from another source, we make it obvious where the original story came from. Here's a recent example of a goodandevo F-up:

In particular, this part:

First, make sure you include "3D" separated by spaces somewhere in the file name when copying the video to your EVO. This will ensure that your phone correctly recognizes this as a 3D video and plays it correctly right off the bat.

I've yet to hear from anyone that has gotten this working. And they site xda as the source, although if you follow that link, you'll see that xda is citing the real source. and the "3D" in spaces quote above was taken from some random poster in the xda thread who wasn't clear about the instruction:

just add "3D" (no quotes) to the title and evo3d will automatically recognize it, no need to hit menu

Sorry I meant header, if the header is tagged as 3d it will get recognized, I have a few that show as mp4-3d, phone plays it automatically

goodandevo only picked up on the first post, which most people assume means adding "3D" to the file name. goodandevo didn't verify jack squat, and they cited an indirect source, not the original content.

Tons more examples of their shoddy reporting. This was just the latest one I encountered.

Yeah I didn't even know they were supposed to be a news source or anything, I just assumed it was a random blog run by one guy who was just forwarding rumors along haha, I just use it as the "grapevine" if you will, somewhere to see stuff

I check phandroid too, but it's nice to have an evo-centric one (excuse the pun)
