This past weekend I agreed to fix my cousin's laptop because I thought I could. He then offered to give me one of his xboxes in return. I have wiped two different hard drive on two different computers without any issues before. This laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L300, was having some issues with not booting. It would boot up, but then the furthest it would get was a black screen with a cursor, and nothing else. I waited 30 minutes to see if anything else would appear, and nothing else did. I tried the including recovery discs and they didn't fix anything.
At this point I decided to wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. I have a copy of DriveScrubber 3 by Iolo. I went through and picked the settings to wipe the whole drive just once, from beginning to end. At first, it sped along, doing its job. Then it hit about 2300MB or so on the 150GB hard drive (5%) and stopped. Just stopped. I watched it, and it would get through 1 (ONE) Megabyte about once every 5 minutes.
After letting it go, expecting it would pick back up, I thought about what to do. I stopped the wipe, restarted the laptop, and tried again. This time it sailed past 2300 and kept going. I watched skeptically as the problem apparently disappeared. It kept going and going..... till 8373. Then it did the same thing.
I repeated this process with the same settings several times, but to no avail. Eventually, I decided to go from end of the drive to beginning. Boy, what a difference that made! It sped along for well over an hour, and I came back to it, still going, at 95% completed. Then I watched in utter horror as it stopped again, at 144xxx of 152628. Then it did the same thing it had been doing, crawling along.
I did the math, and the number at which the process stopped was between 8000 and 9000 away from completion.
I had to go home at this point, so I stuck the laptop in its case, still on to continue, and went home. When I got home, the laptop was off. Not from battery depletion, but from overheating. So, I had to restart it, again.
TL;DR the computer is currently at 142993 of 152628MB wiped, or 94%. Is there anything else I can do to make this DriveScrubber work through the part it stops at? I tried to just install Windows 7 on the drive after it failed at 95%, but it failed too. (Error 0x80070057, for those wondering). I want to fix this so I can have an xbox.
