There's a lot of instructions floating around for unrooting the droid and what makes the most sense to me is to let the phone handle factory reset thereby bringing the phone back to its original out of the box configuration.

By reset I'm referring to booting with power+x vol up+camerra and choosing factory reset from the list.

Can someone who's done the reset on a rooted phone confirm that SU permissions are gone after?

Also, does the reset delete all apps, system settings and user data and bring the phone back to a true factory state (including going back to OS 2.0)?

Doing a factory restore does NOT remove root , SU , BB ,the 2.0.1 update or a custom recovery but it does delete all apps, system settings and user data. That is the reason for all the walkthroughs...

You're absolutely right. SU app and permissions are still there after a factory reset. Just tested it to be sure, good thing i didn't send the phone back yet :)

So here are the pieces I've put together:

While you still have root go to terminal emulator and run the following:

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/app
rm Superuser.apk
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
sync
reboot

Then apply the 2.01 update which you can download directly from google at:
https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20.84263456.zip

Then run the factory reset to remove user data / apps / settings.

My question is: Can the phone now be returned to Verizon without any traces of having rooted the phone?

As long as the SuperUserPermissions are gone and the recovery is back to stock ( <2e> I think it was ) then you are good. FYI there are 2 seperate update.zip methods over at droidforums.net that are all in one solutions for flashing back to stock for returing the device so you dont have to deal with any of the adb nonsense. If you would like links PM me :D
