Rooting is absolutely an option for everyone. Just because you or someone doesn't want to root is a different story.
AFA "real problems" I have no problems with my rooted phone and neither do 99.9% of the rooted users I talk to almost daily. So I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but you're wrong
Really? Rooting is an option for everyone? This may come as a surprise to you but not everyone that has a smart phone has the knowledge base and/or skill set to do such. Additionally, some of us actually have a life with responsibilities that do not allow us to spend hours each day learning the operating system and dinking around with it. Is it REALLY too much to expect that the phone work properly as is?

If you have basic reading and computer skills, ie copy and paste, yes you can root in about an hour.
As far as spending hours everyday learning your phone is a pretty asinine statement.. Not even unemployed developers spend near that much time 'learning and dinking with the OS'
If you don't want to root, that's obviously your choice, but don't make up ridiculous lies to dissuade others.
I'm not making up lies, I am stating *my* reality. I don't have the time or the skill set to figure it out. You say rooting is easy and only takes an hour but there are 540 threads in the "All Things Root" section leading me to think is isn't quite as breezy as you all say.
Look, I am a middle aged mom with her first smartphone who comes here to try to learn more about how it works and how some of the apps work. I suspect I represent a sizable chunk of the general Android-carrying population. We just want the thing to work right without having to resort to fancy stuff like rooting, etc. I don't understand why that is such an outlandish expectation.
Oh, and for the record, I don't know what Gingerbread is and at this point I really don't care. The only reason I read this thread in the first place was because the word "Gingerbread" piqued my interest since it seemed a random thing on tech-type board.
No it is not a lot to ask that the phone work right. In all actuality it did work right till they sent the 1st update. IMO i think that this is "their" (HTC, Verizon) for giving the faulty update. Why should this woman be bashed cause she does not want to root. I don't want to root and it has nothing to do with not knowing.
This thread needs to be locked. It is getting out of hand.

heres my arguement to rooting is an option for everyone...... i shouldnt have to root my phone for it to work right, i bought it and it should simply work and heres another reason i dont want to root its.... IVE BEEN THROUGH 6 THUNDERBOLTS ..... now what happens when i go to send them back a rooted thunderbolt... oh guess what they say EFF YOU and your out a $800 or whatever phone and you have to pay out your arse to get another one..... and the reason ive been through so many is the first was bad out of the box and they replaced it, one the sim reader was bad another battery terminal connections was bad. 3 had eff'd up screens all same dim flickering problem and pixely and eventually the screen went out and im getting ready to get yet another one.... and as far as someone not wanting to root their company phone .... hey why dont you risK losing your career your home your car and everything you own because screwing with your phone was more important than your job its like a cop saying hey since its a company car im going to throw some nitrous on it and go out and be an asshole... you dont think that cop would lose his job for messing with the car or a security gaurd at a school deciding hey im going to upgrade from only carrying a badge that says security guard to hey im going to carry a ar15 even though i was told im not allowed to do it.... none of these things are going to go over well and you know it.
Sorry for the run on sentence but im sitting here trying to figure out if theres a way to fix something thats wrong with my phone just to have to read through bull shyt arguing over why someone wont do something...... this is supposed to be a place to get help not a place to argue with someone because they wont risk losing their job over modding their phone. First off, I'm not trying to talk you or anyone into anything. If someone doesn't feel comfortable rooting their phone, I'd attempt to talk them out of it until they do understand what they are doing, and how they can fix issues that may arise.
...
I couldn't care less whether you or anyone else roots their phone, that's their decision, and they should be comfortable with it before doing it.
This argument about rooting can be summed up in these 2 sentences by Ibrick - one of the people keeping this argument going. It's simple, they're not comfortable doing it. Yet, you're still arguing that it's so easy and that they should do it.
Please do everyone a favor and listen to your own post - not everyone is comfortable with root... so calm down and give callinectes a break... she's not comfortable rooting and just wants the phone to work - 90% (maybe more) of the cell phone world is in this category.
I've rooted before, I am very knowledgeable on rooting and would be able to root the TB without thinking twice. But I choose not to root it because I don't want to deal with the next part about rooting - troubleshooting, customizing, and constantly tinkering with the options you have with root access. Are you going to bash me for making this choice??
Not only is rooting over the head of the average user, those average users are THEN supposed to know what to do AFTER its rooted. I rooted my Samsung Moment and to be honest, I didnt have a friggen CLUE at what to do after. I was told "load some custom kernals and roms", but how was a noob like me supposed to know the difference and what they do. Heck even after I got the Moment rooted I couldnt even figure out how to remove the bloat ware. So I reflashed the original android 1.5 and left it at that.
