Root [CDMA] temp root and battery life

Ok so the two big reasons i rooted my old evo 4g was 1. get better performance out of it and 2. to increase battery life for it. My question is since the temp root has been out has anyone tested using setcpu and maby a combo of other apps to increase battery life? if so what are the results? May still wait till a perma-root is found but just want to get a general idea of it all.

I use Set cpu not to over/underclock but just have it set at a max,min. I tried to use profiles and phone got hot and set CPU kept asking for su permissions. So to me it seems a little buggy with this temp root

I've been able to get 18hrs so far with SetCPU w/ screen off underclock(still at 43%). My average before was about 16hrs 100-15%.

There's evidence that the Li-ion battery tech in this phone is different. I'd be wary of SBC at the moment.

If this is the kernel that constantly keeps the phone at 100% once fully charged then yeah I'd say wait. Mine seems to keep the phone around 99% stock and doesn't have the 10% dropoff like we did with the 4G.

No secret. the fact that its normal charging voltage can exceed 4200mV by quite a lot... Goes against a lot of conventional wisdom about how Li-Ion charging works.

Now, SBC was controversial back in the day because it violated the 4200mV threshold of traditional Li-ion charging. Yes the battery can get charged much more than normal, but at a cost to the battery's long term capacity and longevity?

What happens now if the battery requires a much higher voltage to charge to 100% but instead receives the short bursts of high voltage that SBC employed? And how high of voltage did SBC use? Is it even high enough to make a dent in this new Li-Ion setup? Lots of unknowns. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer not to be the guinea pig for SBC2 until I see some evidence that it's worth it.

The 3vo is not an Evo and it's best to leave preconceptions behind.

Battery Nirvana is oh - so enticing - but best to approach the 3vo as the leap of technology that the Evo was last year.

The SBC mod, controversial in its day, ought not be approached complacently for the 3vo.

With just over light use, I am getting 16+ hours out of about half the battery, no root tricks.

I have every confidence that those with less have more normal usage habits than I -- but primarily suffer from the known evils of bloatware.

I'll be suggesting to do first what we know as experienced Android rooters: remove bloatware, control nonsense net access for marginal apps with DroidWall, install Adfree and make only conservative config changes.

Approach device specific mods only after that and only after the device is treated as the new tech it is.

But - that's just my opinion.

I'm also looking forward to being able to underclock with SetCPU profiles. On my last phone, Pandora worked perfectly well over bluetooth when the display was off and the CPU was only allowed to use 300MHz.

What do you do? are you consistently on it? surfing, etc. what are your sync settings, does your phone sleep?

I text, gtalk, make phone calls, I don't surf the net with it. The phone does sleep I checked the up time. GPS and wifi are off.

ooh, wifi is off? that means you're on 3G most of the time you're using the phone? that might explain it. 3G requires a lot more power than wifi.

wifi is a good thing. you should try to use it as much as you can over 3G, provided that you have a strong signal, and you trust the access point you're connected to.

yeah i have gotten around 12-20 hours on average with me 3D. but, alot of the time im trying not to use my phone because im afraid ill drain the battery too much. currently im at 18h and have 43% left. But, i do have a 2000mah battery and wall charger coming in the mail in the next week 1. to make it so i dont really have to worry about draining the battery cuz ill have a spare 2. because that way i have herd about the whole overcharging thing and decided to watch my voltage and it gets up to 4.3 close to 4.4 sometimes on the charger (doesnt get hot though) and 3. to try and see if the 2000mah makes a difference in battery life cuz i dont think ill get the huge extended battery mainly for the shier size of the thing.

I get great battery life by turning OFF "Enable always-on mobile data"

Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks

Uncheck the "Enable always-on mobile data" checkbox

This may not be for all users. Some application rely on this setting to get updates, but for me it is fine. I still get my Facebook notifications, gmail and SMS text messages with this setting off. The only one I noticed didn't always work was push to talk, but I don't use that app anymore.

Overall I get about an extra 25-50% of battery life. I used to need a charge by the end of the day, now I can go 24 hours easy

well my main concern is iv herd alot about setCPU not working right with this temp root. But, on the other hand iv herd it works great. Cuz i used set cpu on my evo 4G and in combination with juice defender that had my batter life at over 2 days on pretty hard usage whereas i only got maby half a days worth originally. So then my question is anyone trouble with setCPU? and should i just give the temp root a shot?
