Root Question about backups

I want to reflash my desire with a nandroid backup, as when I installed this GB ROM I didnt do a wipe first.

SO I have just created a backup, so if I now do a wipe/factory reset - I can just restore this backup and everything should be as before?

i.e. it wont wipe the sd card, I will still have messages, data connections, apps etc?

A nandroid restore will restore the phone to whatever state it was in when you made the backup. SD card is unaffected, while all apps and all data on internal memory (including sd-ext partition, if you had one) will be restored to their previous state.

So if you have just created a backup, then restoring it will restore your phone to the state it is currently in.

Thanks - just restored after wiping and it's back the way it was.

Trying anything to resolve my battery issues. Might go back to my froyo backup if this doesn't help as my battery life was great.

Any other roms that you can just download and install which are stable, fast and good battery? Something I can just download and install?

How keen are you on the Sense interface? If you're happy without it then Shauny's recommendation is a good one - no frills, but works very nicely.

If you prefer to have Sense, I guess a flick through the "what ROM are you using" thread might contain some suggestions (I'm also not a Sense user, so can't really recommend Sense ROMs from experience).

Using redux here. Its really stripped down but looks ok. Can I restore my apps as I made a backup using titanium. Need to download it though..

I downloaded titanium backup - but is there anything I * shouldnt* restore? Like camera and stuff like that, dialer etc...

Yes, install Ti then you can reinstall your apps. Just missing apps and their data though, not system settings, because they won't be compatible.

Just restoring my apps now, it asks me for each one if I want to install, so could take a few minutes

Do you use a Launcher with this, or run it as is?

I forgot to backup my SMS messages, must have been stored on the phone


<edit> well it didnt help my storage - I installed my apps and down to 14MB! Surely they should be on the sd card though, or do you have to enable app2d somehow??

Before I restored my apps I had 110 MB I think, now down to 14MB!

You need to go to the redux site and download the additional dalvik cache moving a2sd+ script.

I use go launcher.

I use either Go Launcher or Launcher Pro with whatever ROM I'm using (currently a CyanogenMod nightly, stripped down to less than 100 MB).

Titanium Backup Pro allows you to batch restore.

Does your Ti backup include a backup of Dialer Storage [SMS/MMS]? I think that's where Ti stores such stuff. It's not ideal since the dialer may differ between ROMs, but you could try if it's there.

Another option would be this: set up Redux, then take a nandroid of that. Restore the nandroid of your previous ROM, install an SMS backup app (e.g SMS Backup+, or MyBackup), backup messages, then restore your Redux nandroid, install same app and recover them. A little long-winded, but it works.

Any way to sync facebook contacts? So that their picture appears in the contacts etc?

As in 'link' the contacts to FB - cant seem to find a way to do this..

Thanks - but that option isnt there at all.

If I go to edit any of my previously linked contacts - they are not there. The contacts edit page in Redux is completely different. I might delete them all and restore the mybackup I made of contacts, see if that helps.


ALSO: My phone has been on for 1h24mins and by battery is down to 93%. Have only really checked mail a couple of times and messed around in phone settings etc. So so far I'm not sure if redux is helping the battery at all.

Would it be GO Launcher EX or even GO Launcher RX Notifications draining the battery?

Once you're in the edit page, you then Menu again.... I promise you its exactly where I said. open contact>Menu>edit>menu>join

Go Notifications uses a lot of RAM. I uninstalled it.

Go Launcher Ex itself isn't the problem - I'm using that today, and used 10% in 4.5 hours, including forum browsing/posting via 3G while on a train, bit of WiFi activity, and sitting in not so strong signal here. Different ROM & kernel, but I've used Redux and my current setup is no better battery wise than that.

Should I change anything in the CPU settings in the menu?

I'm at 69% after 4.5 hours. 66% display (52 Minutes web browsing) 17% Voice calls. Thats quite low remaining battery for this time of day for me. That said, I'm half way through the working day already

Do you have the power saving mode enabled under cpu setting in Redux?

I think it looks like a great ROM, I really like the customised power control so I can just have Wifi, Data and Sound toggles on my homescreen. Nice that its in the notifications bar also.

I'm wondering if my battery life issues are due to me playing with the phone more, so I guess I should give it a week or until at least the novelty wears off and see if it improves.

I don't really want to go back to my leeDroid Froyo backup, but I might if I can't even get through the day.

I have also been reading about this ManU 1.4 Kernel - which some people swear by - but its unclear to me if you can just flash this on its own and thats it, or you do also have to run it in conjunction with other apps and tinker with a load of settings (setcpu etc) which I don't fancy doing.

Also there seems to be quite a few versions of this ManU kernel over on the xda forums, BFS, CFS, GB, Froyo etc etc. Which one is suitable to flash (if any).

I use ManU 1.4

Its a good kernel, but to get the best out of it, you need to set the min freq to 128Mhz. You can do this in redux cpu settings or set cpu. I dont use powersave no. I overclock.
