Government Debt

President Obama will add more debt than all 43 previous presidents combined. Comments? Flames? "Bob you are wrong, here is a Wikepedia entry that proves it?"
How?

Obama has spent only 4 trillion dollars in 2 years, compared to bush last 2 years at 5 trillion dollars. 1 trillion dollars less then bush. Next year it looks like he will come up 1.3 trillion dollars less then bush did in one year.

But he would have to spend 14 trillion dollars in 6 years, the united states credit rating could not go past 17 trillion dollars, before we where down graded and interest rates would go through the roof.

But please, you are the one making the claim, how can he spend 14 trillion dollars in 6 years?

You'd have to think that anyone else would have to be better, though.

Don't we say that every 4 to 8 years? No such thing as a good/perfect politician. There is 3 branches of government, not all the blame for any of the USA's shortcomings can be blamed on one person or political party. They all work together to screw the country up.

Every politician is elected, and in the end, the buck stops on the american citizen.

Sorry now I see what you did, you excluded the biggest spenders, and the last 30 years of history, cleaver. Well by that total so did bush and Reagen.

Classic case of cherry picked statistics. Every previous president/elected official has put a piece in motion that caused the debt to raise so dramatically.

The debt existed long before Obama took office, and will exist long after. And I believe the only recent president to pay off any of the debt was Clinton.

It's ridiculous how people try to blame one person for such a large problem. I'll say it again, the USA has a government elected by the people, so in the end the finger should only point back to your neighbors, your parents, and yourself.

I agree, especially on your last point.

It's not the politicians that are stupid, it's the American people. We continue to vote for the same assholes, from the same parties, with the same policies, spewing the same bullshit out of their mouths. Then, we have the nerve to complain when they do what they said they were going to. It's pitiful really.

My proposal is that we forgo elections and from now on we appoint politicians by lottery. I really don't think the results would be any worse than what we have now.

naaa the lottery could be rigged...... I say we hold a lottery..... then find out who his mailman is.......... then find the 3rd person on the mailmans route..... then find the 3rd persons 2nd cousin.... the first person who ever kissed the 2nd cousin gets to flip a coin...... if its heads its their neighbor on the left.... if its tails its their neighbor on the right......... and thusly we would have a vastly more qualified president than what weve seen in recent memory

I'm not sure what you mean. If "I", on a consistent basis am voting for the correct or better candidate but there are other idiots who out number me and elect the loser, how am I at fault and how am I as a citizen to blame?

It's part of being an American citizen. You don't like it, you are free to leave, and of course complain, as you are doing.

FWIW if we had elected someone else things may not be different. We had a Rep the last 8 years, and what was left on whoever was elected (Obama, as we all know) was a complete disaster.

Lets see.. .first you start a post blasting black awards shows and now you blast our black president wonder what will be next?

I started a "thread", not a post. And if you're wondering what I'll blast next, it could be your grammar, but I won't go there. Also, why are you assuming the racist BET channel has anything to do with the president?

You know what really drives me nuts?

Reagen added 2 trillion dollars to the debt in 8 years
Bush sr added 1.25 trillion dollars to the debt in 4 years.
Clinton added 1.4 trillion dollars to the debt in 8 years.
Bush jr added 6.64 trillion dollars to the debt in 8 years.
Obama added 1.7 trillion dollars to the debt in 2 years.

Why is this a democrat thing? In the last 100 years, republicans have drove up the debt at least 4 times faster then democrats. And Obama is dealing with the worst finical crash ever. The only way to get out of a depression is to spend money, history teaches you that.

I can see, we are all in this mess now, so pointing fingers at the past will not work. But could we actually follow the constitution for once? Maybe?

The 14th amendment section 4 states

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.
The constitution forbids what is currently happening in Washington. raising the debt can not be questioned, but the words in the constitution of the United States of America.

I know we can not agree on the terms of liberty and freedom in that document, but what the heck is up with ignoring a very clearly written statement adopted in 1868.

Oh and for the record this is directed at no one but just stating a few facts.

Im so sick of people pointing to the 14th and pretending it means we have to raise the debt ceiling........ comprehension is your friend

it says the debt cannot be questioned.......... which means you cannot ignore the CURRENT debt....... that doesnt mean you have to run up more debt........ it simply means the CURRENT debt shall not be questioned

to my knowledge NOBODY on either side of the argument is questioning the validity of our CURRENT debt....... have you heard anyone say we dont owe that much?

let me frame that another way for you

we have a debt....... its valid...... no question....... there constitution obeyed to the fullest

youre right about 1 thing though......... it is pretty clearly written..... when you dont try to misinterpret it to fit your needs

Spending cuts = less jobs. Less jobs = less tax revenue. Less tax revenue = more deficit spending.

Tax policy encourages overseas investment (tax free profits), so money "saved" by tax cuts for wealthy and corporations goes to China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, etc., many of which are absolutely booming with business and projects funded by American banks and wealthy American investors and corporations who won't invest in the US because they'd have to pay some tax on the earnings.

Meanwhile Republicans (and many Democrats) are ready to radically reduce government spending even further while self-styled "fiscal conservatives" whine about deficits and how it's all the black guy's fault without even the most rudimentary understanding of basic economics.
