Root ETA on rooting?

Just wondering the average time one can expect to wait for a rooting solution to come out for the D3. Obviously, it's not the same for every phone, but what seems to be an average? One week? One month? Several months?

I can't wait to get my D3, but I'm not looking forward to the bloatware that's preloaded.

anywhere from 1 day to eternity. ....i would advise you to follow P3Droid on twitter. If it gets rooted you'll hear it from him pretty quickly.

I think it will take longer than normal since the devs said they didnt have a way to root gb so we will see what they can do.

My son wants this phone. I just warned him that rooting is available yet. It would be a pity if they couldn't find a root and recovery (sbf). I don't think he cares as much as I do about it, though.

I really liked the rom animations, btw.

It sucks I've been searching for my girlfriend for a program, glad someone up top said Gingerbreak doesn't work since I was gonna make a post about that. I gotta get my butt in gear and get a D3, I think I'm on my girlfriend's more than she is! haha. Makes my D2 seem outdated .

I'm really liking this phone, but I already miss the convenient and useful little features and options that cm7 adds to Android.

I miss the lockscreen music controls, and the Volume buttons for fast forwarding or rewinding a song the most.

Is there a way to do those things those things without root? That should hold me over until it's rooted.

I heard a while back that MOTO was going to start unlocking their bootloaders towards the end of 2011. I also keep seeing ppl make reference to it when i look for an official release from MOTO, but i still havent found that official release.

can someone link to it, or maybe clarify?

Seems all devices should have the option to unroot, provided the user accepts a waiver when doing so. The OEM or carrier should have little concern as long as they are not paying the support costs for borked user efforts or returns due to rooting. If users want the freedom- great.

Catch is the main reason besides support cost concerns is the non contract (paid) tethering that takes place.

My D3 was ordered this morning and should arrive on Thursday. Coming from a rooted, modded, and personalized HTC Droid Eris, I want root as much as the next guy. All I want to know is whether or not we think the D3 will EVER get unlocked. Maybe I should look at some of the other Moto devices and see whether or not they have all been unlocked.

And unlocked bootloader just makes it easier to root and load a custom recovery which are the keys to custom roms and kernels for devs. If you look at the dx and dx2, they both have locked bootloaders but some how the devs were able to find a way to root and load a custom recovery. However, it took a little while to do it. In contrast, the xoom had an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery and root was established within days of its release. Heck it was overclocked in less than a week, I believe.

Anyways, I think there's two factors that might be a reason why root might take a little while...one being the locked bootloader and the other is the fact we are on the very latest version of android. I don't think too many devices have GB 2.3.4 yet so the normal gingerbreak and other root tools won't work on the D3.

It'll take time but I think a stock D3 is not bad at this point. Custom ROMs will come because this device has so much potential and appeal since its essentially the best android phone with a KB. How can devs pass up on this device?

Root methods are generally tied to Android versions, not phone models or manufacturers. Once more phones are on 2.3.4 or greater, we'll have more opportunity for root. It'll come, just probably not in the very near future. Even if a method is found, I'd be surprised if it's leaked before some flagship models like the Bionic come out. They wouldn't want those phones coming out already patched unless more than one exploit is discovered.

Without any real knowledge of the process of establishing superuser access, I bet we get closer to root when they push out the first OTA update.

There are issues that need to be addressed (like the camera software) and I bet Moto pushes a fix soon. They did for the D1 within a month or so.

I think that will unlock a few mysteries, maybe.

Updates generally only expose vulnerabilities when they actually patch them in the update. Unless they close an actual vulnerability in the update, having an update won't give us that much. Also, those kinds of changes often won't go in the change log, so you'd have to meticulously go over each file in the update to see what has changed.

Our biggest hope for gaining root is having more devices on 2.3.4 or greater. The DX2 is starting to receive our version of GB starting today, so that will be another phone on 2.3.4.

Yes I think you will see the D3 rooted. However I do not know of a device that has been rooted on Gingerbread yet. I have a DX (my son has the D3 so I am watching this for him) the only way to root Gingerbread is to be on FroYo and install a pre-rooted version on Gingerbread. No one has come out with a way to root Gingerbread once you are on it if you are not installing the pre-rooted version. The rooting is done on the install. I agree though as more phone are shipped with Gingerbread on it someone will find a way to root it.

Yep. Once the Bionic hits, unless Moto *completely* screws it up, you'll start seeing a hard press for a root method for it and that exploit should be able to be used on our phones, too.

Nobody knows whether the bootloader will be unlocked on the Bionic yet. If it's unlocked then rooting the BIonic will do nothing for droid 3 users

I found this supposed Motorola quote, apparently it's their

intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011, where operator and channel partners will allow it.

This lines up with the rumor that Motorola will be unlocking the D3 come this winter. I think somebody posted that they talked to someone who was actually testing a Droid 3 with an unlocked bootloader?
