Root Replacement phone comes with GB. Need to get wireless tether...

My bluetooth stopped working on my X. Vzw sent me a replacement phone but it comes with GB already installed. I haven't activated it yet because I don't want to lose my root which apparently I will.

Is the process for SBFing back to Froyo the same in my case? Is there a link that has a true step by step from sratch instructions for what I should do? The links I've found kind of assume you know a lot which I don't.

I only really need a wireless tether which is why I rooted my x in the first place.


Any word on when an OTA root will be accomplished? It's hard to believe that it's been that difficult. It seemed like in the past it only took days for a root to be made available after a phone was released.

No. Obviously I will take the necessary steps to SBF back to Froyo and install a rooted GB if I must, but I prefer to stay OTA stock whenever possible.

good luck getting tether to work on GB. Take your chances with Verizon catching you stealing and possibly terminating your service all together, or buy a plan.

Not sure what you mean by that. I've had my phone rooted and using wireless tether for over a year as have 10s of thousands of other users have as well. I don't recall any of them having their plans terminated. Besides, how would Verizon know?

And yes, 10's of thousands of others have used wireless illegally, which is why VZW is cracking down on it, and all the tethering apps have been removed from the store. Look, I'm not going to get into any sort of debate here, do a search and read the thousands of posts relating to wireless tethering. All I'll say is buy a plan, or don't, its your choice. There has been one unsubstantiated claim of a guy being charged like $300 and having his service cancelled supposedly because of his wireless tether use. Take it as you will.

A friend at work with a stock T-bolt got an update on his phone and now tethering prompts him to buy a plan.

I don't understand how he used it for free for a couple months in the first place. He claims the app came pre-installed with the phone.

the latest wireless tether seems to work for me, but i never use it. try googling for it.
also you can SBF back to froyo. look in the root section's stickies

You probably won't find a way to do this on GB since people have been trying since we got the leaks. And I wouldn't hold out much hope for a root method for the OTA. There is a guide in the stickies (two actually) that can successfully guide you through an SBF. This thread will not be used to discuss the morality, ethics, or legality of tethering though that horse has been beaten enough around here. If you want wireless tether either pay for it or sbf and stay on froyo. and you only have like 4-5 million years before the sun goes white dwarf so the wait won't be that bad

Im not getting into this because its been discussed to death...but I will just say you're completely wrong...you may pay for unlimited data for your phone...but you're not paying to share it with other devices ...read the contract you signed...

It probably did.... seems that VZW was offering tethering for free on LTE phones.

Anyhoo, TBH had a tether patch out awhile back but it's since been removed from the app. Google might be your friend for finding that, not sure.

That ^ is amazing.

Can we just set up a board standard answer? Tethering is against the terms of service you signed at the time of purchase, there is a risk of being caught, charged a large fee, and your service being terminated. However if you are willing to take these risk a Google search will most likely turn up what you need.

regardless tethering is against your TOS, i hope you take this info and use it for the better of you, and are not using tons of bandwidth, like powering your XBOX and Laptop while downloading movies..

Yea, anyone who is tethering GBs of data would probably suffer more scrutiny. My tethering is limited to rare occasions when I don't have wifi. We took a trip to disneyland this week and it came in handy while standing in lines with my ipad.

Occasionally, a hotel we stay in will have no wifi or such slow broadband that the 3g is actually a lot faster.

I probably do it a few times a month for general surfing and it's probably no more than a 100 mb a month. Now that we can stream netflix directly to our phones, most of my data usage is netflix and is now about 5 GB a month mostly from streaming video.
