Gingerbread Update

According to a tech on the Motorola forums last week, a Gingerbread update for the Pro is ready, or almost ready, and is pending Verizon approval (the post on the Motorola site has since been edited to remove that information). It was indicated that the update would be released by the end of Q3 or sooner.

Well, it seems that at least a couple people have had updates come through a lot sooner than that:

Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) Starts Rolling Out for the DROID Pro? New Blur Version 4.6.4 Finds Two Readers’ Phones - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

I just checked and there's no update for me.

Would you by any chance be able to upload the update.zip file for manual updating? Can't you do this by putting it on the SD card and going into the bootloader?

Tried finding the update.zip file, but nowhere to be found after installing it. Looks like you would have to download, back out before installing and copy the file, then return to updates and install. I was going to but was so happy after it downloaded (in 45 minutes) that I just hit install without thinking.

Haha jumping for joy I assume? If I'm quick enough to remember I'll try to nab it. Thanks though.

There is also a rooted version of Gingerbread from TeamBlackHat if you would prefer loading that one. As far as I know, there is no root yet for the Verizon packaged update.

So, at least on short term, one would be better with the TBH release ? Of course, given he wants/needs root access right now.

The TBH version for the Droid Pro is the same one as for Droid X ? I've seen this one mentioned on forums, but I wonder if I should look/wait for a DPro one ( I'm new to the Droid game, sorry if it's a stupid question )

hmm, not positive, but I think it would be specific to the droid pro. Several users over at droidforums.net have loaded successfully and are rooted running gb.

2.2 Froyo scored 1530 on Quadrant.

2.3 GB scored between 1850-1950... DAYUM

I know Quadrant is silly to compare phones against other phones and obviously the Droid Pro has a smaller resolution to render 2D and 3D... but comparing 2.2 against 2.3 is perfectly fine and the upgrade is fricken amazing. That's damn impressive Google/Moto/VZW. Good job!

Yeah is gingerbread available for this phone yet or not? Im considering purchasing it for some of my employees that are bb tour users.

Not OTA. You can download and manually install the update that went out OTA to a handful of users awhile back. It was an official build that was sent out as a test run. By all accounts, it's a very stable build that makes the phone even better than it already is. A Motorola tech said to expect the final update to go out to everyone sometime in Q3.

So I might be the perfect guy to talk to about phone comparisons, I bought the droid pro the day it came out and since then i have had an X2 which has a dual core, an Iphone, a thunderbolt which is LTE, and also a windows 7 phone. So i have had a spectrum of the newer phones. The phone Im currently using is still the Pro. The cpu is still 1ghz so its not too bad it will match most of the phones still being made. Here is the pros and cons:

Pros:
The phone is small not bulky, nice weight to me
Battery life is amazing, on medium use I have been pulling atleast 20 hours a day
Keyboard- Of course this is the reason why people buy it, but its a great keyboard
World Phone- Doesnt help me too much but its a good thing to have in case
The update for gingerbread is out, it was out before the X2 got its update

Cons:
Screen is smaller then most, using it as an E-Reader or reading alot of documents might be rough
it might just be the update but the camera app is kinda sluggish and glitchy

Here is my bottom line, this is what blackberry should be like, its got a great keyboard and touch screen, the bigger app support is the key, blackberry is dying there. And up against the dual core, the x2 was nice the benchmark scores were great, but it honestly didnt seem like it was double the speed of the phones. It just didnt seem worth it too me. I have decided to stick with the pro, I chose the keyboard because I use it ALOT, over the dual core, or LTE because those things are nice but the overall experience is better with the PRO in my opinion.

Here it is August, and my phone still won't update to Gingerbread. Has it been officially released yet?

No. Motorola pulled all of their scheduled Gingerbread updates for the Droid X, Droid 2/Droid 2 Global, and Droid Pro when the original Droid X update started having major problems. The word around the internet is that the Droid X update is due out sometime this month, so one would assume the others would follow closely behind.

Before the first Pro Gingerbread update was pushed to a handful of users, a Motorola tech on their forum did originally say they expected the Pro update to be released in Q3, so we're still well within that time frame.
