The 2.1 Speculation Thread

Its not Sprints fault, its Googles' Fault. There is no way Google is going to release 2.1 to any other devises until they sell 1 billion Nexus Ones. This is in the Android contact negotiations and was chiseled in stone a long time ago by some guy with a huge beard.

Remember though that CDMA support has been native in Android since 1.6 which was not the case in 1.5. While there might be some differences there won't be nearly as many as there were between 1.5 GSM and CDMA code. Updates on the release of 2.1 to the GSM version of the Hero do have bearing on the CDMA version since there is less difference between the two as far as the OS is concerned.

Yeah, what ever licensing deal that Sprint has with Nascar and NFL, etc., won't be left out of the 2.1 upgrade for sure. I find it frustrating to have to deal with this...

I wonder if this will ever be challenged in court? I mean on par with Microsoft force feeding you their web browser. Why are we inundated with software we have no control over when we are REQUIRED to purchase the handset we will use to purchase airtime and other services from the carrier??? Let alone on this particular OS which "IS" open source and as such leaves me the option to add to it as I see fit.

I'm getting tired of hearing about the 2.1 update and fail to see why it is such a huge thing for people... Everyone should be more concerned about the restrictive practices of the Cellular Carriers and their continued anti-trust and restraint of trade practices...

Like I stated in a previous post I could honestly care less at this point when 2.1 becomes available cuz like the poster above said it's gonna be filled with sh*t apps that hardly any of us want bogging down our phones so why is everyone so excited I don't know. Other than native CDMA support and access to additional market apps 2.1 is mostly a UI polish with some flare here(camera app slightly better) and there. I've rooted and i love it and may not even reflash stock to upgrade to 2.1

I dunno I use 2 of the Sprint apps a lot: Navigation and NFL... free NFL network games? Home-station radio broadcasts of all games? Pretty good for "bloatware". And obviously Google Nav may render Sprint Nav unnecessary, but it has been nice having free navigation software while say for example those w/ the Droid Eris have to pay VZW 10 bucks a month for the privilage. I've rooted my phone and gotten rid of the others, but honestly they didn't take up that much space and I they didn't really seem to be "bogging the phone down".

Yes, I did not mean to imply that the programs didn't work, but the equipment is "MINE", I purchased it, yes some at a reduced cost with the contractual obligations to purchase services which will recoup the provider for the cost of the phone and some profits generated by the service. But, it is MY phone none the less and I am prevented from certain control over it which is just annoying to me.

Lol, anyway, for the record I love my HERO and haven't rooted it yet, I really don't see the need. Also, the only GLARING omission i really need is the Bluetooth (file) OBEX functionality. If 2.1 takes care of these items and or any ROM out there then I might root it.

It's all good... haha

Not trying to flame you or anybody with this, but most people don't realize or pay any attention to the fact that these phones we have are a mere convienence. You don't NEED a cell phone. You don't NEED cellular service and you don't NEED the latest OS on your mobile device.
What did people do 40 years ago when cell phones weren't even an idea yet?
Believe me, I love the convienences my phone provides me, along with the games for entertainment and the "wow" factor I have when showing it off to someone still using a flip-phone from 2002.
Does it help you perform you job better? Does it make getting help in an emergency much easier? Of course it does.
But I'm sure you would find a way to live without it.
Erm....maybe not....sadly.
Yeah, we pay good money for these services and expect things to work to our likings. But seriously, we aren't guaranteed anything in life (except death and taxes).
Reminds me of a doomsday situation where most people would die because they don't even know how to start a fire with sticks. Or how to snare a rabbit for food. Or build a lean-two for shelter.
We've become so dependent on this technology that I almost can't wait for the day of iRobot to come for real so they can tell us how we should live to protect ourselves, from ourselvs.

<--/rant

Sorry. I appreciate all the techies out there making things easier and cooler for me, and the following they have. But I actually do things outside of the cellphone world.

Hope I didn't offend anyone. Apologies in advance if I did. :(

really 1billion?if i remember right the nexus 1 has sold around 20,000 in the first week or so....if it keeps selling like that we will never get 2.1...and sprint has to help push it out so sprint has some fault...

You don't NEEED McDonald's but they will be sued for a Monopoly. They will also be sued if they hurt the consumer. Your point is hard to tell, but cell phone companies don't get an easier time because you don't NEED them. The poster was talking about them violating your rights!

While I get your point of being "ok" with the phone that you don't NEED, this is money being spent, and the law is made for a reason. Laws like the 4th amendment may only be applied to things you NEED (i.e. car not included as well) but monopoly and shady business practices would go to a non-necessity phone.

Sorry for the rant, I hate legal misconceptions and I'm not a techie, but I know that stuff :)

The problem with this argument is where do you stop? a little over 100 years ago we didn't have phones at all, before that we didn't have electric lights, go far enough back and we did not even have fire! Everybody got along fine then too, so do we really need anything.

I don't know about you, but I do NEED my phone, it is the core of my business; the ability to contact and be contacted away from the office, get a hold of a vendor or customer support on-site, check availability of parts and place orders, send and receive emails on the fly. If I had to return to the office to do this every time my already astronomical fuel bill would be into the thousands each month! People complain about prices and money, time is money, if I had to deal with that my prices would go through the roof (some tell me they already are)!

Progress changes the way people live. What was a dream before fills a place of necessity, people find it difficult to do without. Yes, unnecessary complaining about "my service is slow right now", "I don't want to wait for this or that", etc. is pointless and ridiculous, but a certain level of service is expected, and yes deserved. Think about it, you are paying for it, if it was free then you would not have the right to complain, but it is not.

Luis C.K. summed it up perfectly, it is the ungrateful generation that is the problem, the ones who expect these thing and think they are a constitutional right (my step-daughter is one of them, unfortunately, you should see the head butting going on) and you are evil to suggest otherwise.
