Hello

I finally got rid of my old nokia 2003 flip phone and got a nice nexus S from Fido

i have a few questions

does it have some gps software that does not rely on the network ? ( i dont want to be roaming if Im going on a road trip)

if it does not have that option then can I connect a blue tooth gps reciever ?... ( i have tom tom on my pda and that is how ive used gps for years)

I thought the phone had its own gps and not Agps.....

its still a very nice looking phone though....

Everything you need hardware-wise to navigate is on your phone. However, the preinstalled Google navigation software relies on maps that are stored on it's servers and downloaded as your routing requires - no maps are on your device. If you want indipendence from data downloads you need to purchase third party apps such as ALK Technology's CoPilot Live, Navigon, Tom Tom to name probably the best known. All of the mapping, that you decide you want, will be downloaded to your device's USB storage and hence, there is no need for a data connection. All you need is a clear line of site to Satellites overhead. Pricing is very competitve at present so you should get some good deals. The final choice is down to your personal preferences. There are also some lesser known providers of satnav software but many of them have limited support and or capabilities. Just Google reviews on the subject and then choose.

In addition to the excellent information from heat57, you can also use good old google maps for navigation without a data connection with the latest version of google maps. You need to download the maps you will need before you go on your road trip. You have to enable your phone to take advantage of this feature by going to menu/more/labs.
