Video Chat Apps on Triumph

Does anyone here have a suggestion for a good video chat app on this phone? Do you have to be on wifi to use this feature with Virgin Mobile? Any feedback or suggestions is welcome as I have no experience with video chat. Loving this phone btw..noticed a lot of posts about issues but so far after a couple of days of use I really haven't had any problems at all.

I tried Tango the other day and it was usable. Tried to download oovoo the other day and it wouldn't let me until I read that the Triumph isn't supported yet :(

Hi Fallaen,

May I ask what type of issues you are experiencing with Tango? We have yet to receive a Motorola Triumph in the office to test yet.

If you have any questions or require assistance, please feel free to visit Tango Support Center and submit a request for help. :)

I have the Triumph and my friend has the Optimus V (both Virgin Mobile) and we have used Tango a few times with good results. I have found, however, that if I use my speakerphone, his end gets feedback really bad.
Other than that, the front camera on my MT and his rear camera work amazingly well. And being able to switch between front and rear cameras is cool, too.
I have to say that I've only used it over wifi since I've been using at my house. I'll take a trip out into the world today and see how it works over 3G.

Video was fine, however the sound was horrible like the user above me said on speakerphone. Would be an excellent app if you could fix the speakerphone.

Thanks for the feedback! Our team is working hard on addressing the audio issue. Expect good things from us soon :)

Do you happen to know when the desktop version of Tango will be available? This will be crucial for my use of the program. That's why I was hoping for Skype, but if you guys work that out, then count me in!

Hi Michelle,

We don't have an exact date yet but it is coming soon :) Please feel free to sign up at Get Tango - Tango and we will alert you when Tango for PC is available.

apps end in a .apk extension. You can directly install a .apk file without needing to go thru the market.

For example (at least a few weeks ago), you could not find the Netflix app when you searched the market on the triumph. Downloading and installing the .apk file lets you use the Netflix app on this phone

GUYS USE THIS SKYPE INSTEAD!!!

[DEV] Skype Video for Froyo (and GB) - Page 26 - xda-developers

This is not my work at all but an awesome developer. Make sure to thank him! It basically is Skype but with a custom build on it which makes it so much better. You can use the front view camera and works well on 3g. I tested it and it's sooooo cool I can just walk around with my phone to Skype with people. A huge battery eater but cool nonetheless :)

fallaen,

I tried the version of Skype you recommended. It's kind of glitchy on the triumph. I was trying it out and it crashed once. It tends to cause the status bar to hang up and take up half the screen. I had to mess around to fix that issue. It happened on both my wife's and my triumph. It's fine when video calling in landscape, but in portrait the videos were always upside down from each other on the screen.

Its almost ready for the triumph, but I think we can ask the developer to tweak the Skype for the triumph.

If you already have Skype installed you will need to uninstall, then install this version.

Regards,

@fallaen @easy_e could you please report back to this dev with your findings and bugs. it seems that he is pretty capable in this area and has a interest in making video chat using front facing camera work on froyo devices. i don't have a Triumph yet, so cant do this.

ALSO he has a modified version of vtok which can be used video chat on google talk. can some one try this on the Triumph?

Let me hold off on contacting the developer, because I think the link fallaen provided was not the latest build. I'll test out the latest build tonight and see if it works any better.

Update: I've tested the latest build and it does seem to work correctly. The current build only orientates the videos correct for landscape. If you try the Skype in portrait and notice the videos are upside down from each other, there is nothing wrong. The current build has not fixed this video orientation for portrait. The developer is aware of this issue and I believe he is working to resolve the orientation in portrait.

For the latest build of Skype with ffc (Front Facing Camera) go to the first page here:
[DEV] Skype Video for Froyo (and GB)

Then click on the link to the latest build.

Thanks for the link. I tried it and it works great on my Triumph front facing camera! My first video call was to my son in Korea and it worked great! Really nice to be able to Skype video call from a cell to a PC overseas!
