Why shouldn't I switch to Iphone?

Up until recently I have been die hard Android and Verizon but lately both suck. My Droid 1 which has had the same Apps, same config for 1 1/2 years has turned into the biggest pile of crap of any phone I've ever owned. Force closes/Wait screen all the time, takes 7 minutes to make a call, then just works fine for a full day, then doesn't work. I've tried everything to fix it other than wiping out the phone.

Then there is Verizon...The 3G now officially sucks. Down all the time, lagging when it does work (I'm in major metro area). No decent phones to purchase for 4G. But worse than having slow 3G is having fast 4G with ATT which is in my opinion is the worst company ever.

My contract is up in 2 weeks. I can't take this phone any longer. I don't want the Droid 3 because it is 3G. Only the Bionic peeks my interest yet who knows when the hell it will ever come out.

What do you suggest?

I suggest picking your carrier first - always! - and then picking your phone.

iPhones are ok, there's a reason they sell a bunch.

But before deciding that the iPhone is the answer because your 1.5 year old phone died - well - that's your choice.

I'm rocking the Evo 3D and loving it - and there are still plenty of great Android choices.

But pick your carrier first, then just get the phone you want on that carrier.

And - the Droid, even with updates - doesn't compare with the new crop of dual core Androids.

Then again - neither does the iPhone, but that's just my opinion.

If one of your main concerns is 3G speeds, why would you switch to an iphone? It does not have "4G" on any network.

Agree with both.

If you are in a major metro area, your Verizon signal should not be bad. The problem might be your phone and not the network signal. Do you have any other friends or coworkers that are using Verizon and are having the same problem? I think you need to do some investigation first and not to blame Verizon so quickly.

You mentioned it is a Droid 1 that was purchased one and a half year ago. One and a half year is a rather long time in the mobile world. Some of the technologies have become old. Your operating system for example is outdated. And you might have also installed a lot of apps that slow down the phone.

As the other posters have mentioned, iPhone 4 is an inferior product as compared to the latest 4G Android phones on the market. Instead, you should consider getting the new 4G Android phone from Verizon. And if you can wait a little bit, the Samsung Galaxy S II will come soon. That will certainly bring your joy back.

Hope this helps.

+1 ..... nothing more to say.... go with what you want. .. just dont bitch about it.

Dan330, there is one of you on every board. The guy who bitches about people bitching.

And I am pretty sure I have the right to bitch. Ever since Verizon launched 4G the 3G network has gotten slow. Search the web, I am not the only one "bitching" about it. And if you search the web for "droid running slow" you will also see alot of people "bitching" about that too.

Phones should not be obsolete in 1.5 years or 2 years as most contracts are 2 years. I shouldn't be forced to pay full retail because the manufacturer is selling sub-par crap or the OS developer is selling sub-par crap and cannot release more than 2 updates in 2 years.

This is a forum. It has many uses. One of them is bitching.

Ever since Verizon launched 4G the 3G has been terrible.
I am trying my hardest to hold out as I absolutely do no want to even entertain the idea of going to ATT. I will keep my eyes open for Samsung Galaxy S II as you suggested and also hope the Bionic makes it out on Aug 4th as the rumors say it's possible.

I haven't installed a lot of apps by the way. In fact, I installed only apps that I needed when I first got my phone and haven't installed any since.
I am just frustrated that I can't seem to find a fix for the way it is running.

Hi Slacker1313, you do not have to pay the full price of the phone even if you have not reached the end of your 2 year contract. As long as you sign another 2 year contract, you will get the subsidized sales price. The only thing you cannot get is the NE2 discount of $100 which is something you have to complete the full 2 year term.

I actually gave up my NE2 discount to get my Samsung Fascinate last year because I did not want to wait for another 2 months. And yet I paid only the subsidized discount price for the phone.

I understand that the typical contract is 2 years, but more and more people are starting to upgrade before they reach the 2 year term. It is because of the rapid advancement of mobile technologies.

Apple's strategy is for you to upgrade every single year. Just look at how quickly the iPhone 1st generation got obsoleted. Many of my friends who are Apple fans are indeed upgrading to new iPhone on a yearly basis. So if you do not like short product life cycle, you should not consider iPhone at all.

I don't quite agree with this. My brothers iPhone 3GS was released on June 19th 2009 (even the 8gb model was released on June 24th 2010)... So he's had his 32gb for over 2 years, and the iPhone 3GS is about to be updated to iOS 5 this fall. That's a decent life span if you ask me.

All smartphone technology moves very fast, so fast that it's hard to keep up with... it is what it is.

I just switched to an HTC inspire after 2 years of having an iPhone. iPhone has better apps without question, but I really like the interface and customizing on the android phone. I can't talk on speed too much, because my iPhone was the 3g that was 2 years old, it was a lot slower than my new phone but like someone pointed out, 2 years is old technology. If you want a whole new world of apps, which is one reason I may switch back to an iPhone in a couple years when I switch my phone then go with the iphone, if that doesn't matter than android is the way to go.

Go with something that has been tried and true, like the evo 4g or, Iphone. I heard the the droid charge is coming out on boost mobile. Personally, if I was going to be using the phone for anything important, I would get a real phone, that makes phone calls. Not a pocket pc, that happens to make calls when it feels like it.

You must not have Verizon because you are just plain wrong. If you were able to upgrade early it was because you had a Annual Upgrade and not because they just "let you" upgrade. In fact, since the iPhone came out, manager approved early upgrades are all but completely gone (only used for special circumstances). I have literally watched managers have customers leave the carrier because of this, it simply makes no business sense to let people upgrade before their real upgrade date, buyers remorse/wanting the new thing isn't a reason for a company to take a hit on equipment.

Long story short, this guy is wrong, please don't take that post seriously.

Slacker I can't blame you for being frustrated. I actually just got rid of an OG Droid I had due to it running slowly. I tried everything too. I was able to get some improvement by loading custom roms, overclocking, etc, but in the end it still lagged to no end. Maybe I had some faulty hardware because I know not everyone's experience is like that, but for me it made it unbearable.

As has been said, choose your carrier first then check out the variety of phones available. I am personally not loyal to any manufacturer or platform, so I'm not just going to push Android on you. Try out the iPhone, Windows Phone 7, and webOS too. Pick what suits you.

I really want to stick with one if possible as it just makes life easier when you do upgrade a phone.

My girlfriend is on her second droid X2 and she is having same problems as I am. Lagging, force close/wait screens etc...I am just starting to believe that Apple is probably the better product. I just don't see the same issues being reported all over the web about Apple as much as I do Droid. But who is at fault? Motorola, the OS, Verizon? Not sure what I am going to do. If there were more 4G options available right now I think the decision would be easier.

Yeah the whole 4G thing makes things tougher. I'm not sure if you remember this but when 3G was coming out there were a lot of similar feelings. It'll be nice once 4G has matured a bit. There are definitely benefits to iPhones for some people. It's hard to say that here because many Android loyalists want to crucify you or make you into a brainless idiot who will buy anything with an apple logo on it regardless of quality, but that's just not true. Apple does make good phones for many people, and there's a reason people buy them, and then stick with them when they upgrade. I also like their update model, no waiting on the carrier. Of course it'll be argued you can root and custom rom to achieve the same thing with Android, but not everyone wants to go through that. Are you married to sticking with Verizon? Other carriers have a much faster 3G than Verizon (AT&T, T-Mobile), although Verizon's LTE currently smokes the other carriers 4G options.

I loved my iPhone 3Gs that I had with ATT, but it up and died on me after about22 months. I also had a BB with Verizon that was way overdue for an upgrade, but I was hoping to wait for the iphone 5 to come out before I upgraded. So I got the iPhone 4 with Verizon as I need to get rid of the ATT since it doesnt' work at my house at ALL. I don't know if it was the individual phone I had, or if it is because it was the iphone on Verizon network, but it SUCKED. LOTS of lagging, stuttering, and force closing apps, especially the FB app. Drove me nuts.

I got the Charge and like it so far. I need to do some studying and see whatall I can do to increase my battery life(GREAT on standby, but I am on it constantly and sometimes have to charge it 2-3x day.), and performance, but I really do like it a lot. I was concerned because I've never had a droid and was worried that I'd hate it, but I'm very pleased so far.

I have noticed a little lag, but nothing worse than my iPhone 3gs was doing before it died.

I also agree that a phone should NOT be obsolete in just a couple years. It annoys me to no end to pay a couple hundred bucks for a phone and have to do that every other year. I agree also that you need to choose your carrier first and then investigate the phones they offer. If I could have stayed with ATT, I probably would have stuck wtih an iPhone. But like I said, I am liking my droid much better than I thought I would.

Good luck with your decision. All the researching, etc drove me nuts.

I see a lot of wrong here. IMO, the thing that makes bad business sense is letting customers leave your company, and taking the $60-300 they pay you every month with them. Basically, you can be a harda** and try to get them to pay <$600 full price for the phone OR let them upgrade a couple months early, give them a subsidized price of ~$200 and make it up in a couple months.

I dont know how Verizon works because I was a mere child that was uninvolved with that family plan. But, i do know that ATT takes a stand in not letting customers leave if they can help it. They can make a LOT of concessions to please customers that are threatening/prepared to leave. Also, they almost always make your upgrade date 18-21 months into the contract as opposed to 24.

So yea.

I really want to stick with one if possible as it just makes life easier when you do upgrade a phone.

Honestly try the iPhone out. But like many have said, if slow data speeds are really a problem then why would you want to get another 3G phone. And one thing about ATT is the the "4G" is incredibly faster than the 3G... EX: in downton atlanta the best i have ever gotten in a speed test is 3.2mbps down, 345kbps up. <--- Thats on my inspire.

But ALSO, like many have said just get what you want. This website is not Android, and our job is not to convince you to stay. If you dont like the platform then dont make yourself miserable by keeping it.

NOW contrary to all that I have said, I dont really think your "network speed problem" has to do do directly with verizon. I think its more linked to the age of your device. And i do agree that a device should definitely have a life cycle that is longer than the contract period but what are ya gonna do? :p
