Root Root help after 2.3.3 update.

Hey guys, new to this whole Android scene and need some help, got my HTC desire HD here with the 2.3.3 ota update? (? because i dont know if it is ota or what it means)

Tried to run SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak 1.2 with no success. If theres anyone out there who can help that would greatly appreciated.

What's your S/W version? Unless you have S-OFF, you'll need to downgrade to root from Gingerbread.

I'm sorry but I dont know what you mean by S/W and S-off.

If i go to my software info in settings i get the following. Sorry if this isnt the correct info you need.

S/W is just an abbreviation for Software, I've highlighted the info I was looking for.

S-ON is just an inbuilt HTC security check which blocks access to certain aspects of the phones internals, making root very hard (although not impossible dependant on your S/W version). S-OFF just deactivates this security check.

In order to root properly, you need to downgrade to an older version (Android 2.2, S/W number 1.32.405.6), root, grant yourself S-OFF, then install a custom ROM or if you want an official HTC build with root, use an RUU (ROM Upgrade Utility) to upgrade to Gingerbread again.

You can choose this guide, or this one. Which ever looks easiest for you.

It does seem a daunting process at first, but it looks a lot harder than it is and there'll be plenty of folk on here to assist should you get stuck. I believe JSLEnterprises even has some handy batch tools to make it easier for first timers.

i am having the same problem with a brand new sprint htc evo android 2.3.3. gingerbreak 1.1/1.2 does not work. you cannot downgrade at all at this latest version. ruu installers fail. i attempted to install the supersonic RUU and it failed.

there's no way to root the phone. so you can't boot in recovery and you can't flash a rom because you need root in the first place. the ROM manager app in the app store needs root to work. in other words (this has been verified on other blogs i've read) we're SOL until somebody writes a hack.

i'm sure somebody else could explain it better, but hopefully somebody comes up with something soon so i can get super user!
