Desire USB play in car audio system?

Am on holiday and have rented a Renault Scenic (pretty much brand new latest model) and it has a USB port that you can plug into and play iPOD music through the car speakers.

I have tried this with my HTC Desire but not got it to work? Does anyone know if it's possible. I have to listen to my daughter's iPOD at the moment!!!

My wife's Nokia N97 Mini worked once but not since...

Has anyone successfully connected their Desire to a car's USB port and managed to get the audio to play through thr car's audio system?

If so - how!?

Ian

Yes, I recently did it with a friend's brand new Vauxhall Meriva (she has the same phone & asked me to test it for her), but I've forgotten exactly how I did it .
I will be seeing her tomorrow and/or can try it on my parent's Citroen C4 Grand Picasso - I normally use Bluetooth, but it has USB and, being French, it may be more similar to Renault?

I know I definitely enabled mass storage (as suggested above) and, then, I worked through the "Source" options until it worked... my poor memory suggests there was some pause before it was recognised and, also, that it was the option after the one I expected it to be (Aux??).

If, when I get to try it again, I will check back and update with something more specific. Good luck in the meantime :)

*edited to add*:
I think I had to play the media using my phones media player, at least initially (but I'm not 100% sure)

I have just tested my phone on both cars (mentioned above) & music plays through both.

Meriva:
>Plug in USB lead
>Select "Disk Drive"
>Press "Source" until it finds phone
>Music played automatically

There was no need to start music player - I said my memory was bad

Citroen was the same process, although it did show "USB peripheral error" the first time I tried it. I turned off debugging & tried again & it worked. Having said that, I then turned debugging back on (after disconnecting it) and it worked okay - so the debugging may be a red herring & the error was just a random thing?

Hope some of this helps :)
