Screen on (low brightness) notification?

One of my issues with the Droid Charge is lack of notification LED.

I thought of a possible solution the other day but I have no idea how to go about implementing it.

Is there a way to set your phone up so that when you get a notification, the screen turns on (and stays one) on the lowest brightness setting (as dark as "night mode" on the alarm clock)?

This way, you can tell when you have a notification by just glancing at your phone and it shouldn't waste that much battery.

Anyone know how this can be done? Would this run down the battery quickly?

There is an app called NoLED in the market that can do this. It can be found here .
