Switch from Eris to Droid? (why shouldn't I)

I have until tomorrow to decide..

I have had the Eris almost for a month, I like it, but wish it had the high resolution Screen and the Multiple Gmail App. but otherwise I really have no complaints.

So to play devils advocate.. why should I not switch.

I did post on Moto Droid forum here ask Why I should switch, Figured I would get both sides on to switch or not..

If the high resolution screen is your #1 priority, then you should go with the Moto Droid. Picking a phone is about what you want, not what anyone else thinks.

The few things that the Eris brings to the table do not outweigh many of the things that the Droid has. The only things you get with the Eris over the Droid are size, Sense UI, trackball and physical buttons. If none of that does it for you then I say, make the switch.

well I guess honestly if there is no REAL difference.. I don't need the physical keyboard, I am doing pretty well with the Eris one.

The High resolution screen is about the only thing I wish the Eris had, but playing with the Moto is seems there si stepped zooming with the browser while the Eris you can sort of adjust as you wish.. I like the pinch zoom too.

but I don't know if $100 more is worth switching for a higher resolution screen.

I was just looking for the Major truthful differences, other them the stuff I have rad, processor etc. maybe even people who switch from Droid to Eris too..

just want to cover all bases before I am committed to the phone for 2 years

I switched from the Moto Droid to the Eris. I came from an Omnia, so I was insistent on a physical keyboard. I can tell you that the Droid's keyboard is worthless. It's off-center and not user friendly. It feels cheap to me. Also, the button to put the phone to sleep and wake up is in a really awkward place. Those are the two things that I loathed about the Droid.

It's true the Eris isn't quite as snappy, but it feels better in my hand and fits better in my pocket. I have no problem with the resolution.

IMO the DROID is a great phone... I had before switching to the eris. I just didn't like the weight and size of the phone. Besides that, it had a big beautiful screen and worked great. I even was getting used to the hard keyboard, which I though would be useless, but ended up coming in handy. The only regret I have with the eris is that I can't install SWYPE on it I loved that keyboard (tear runs down cheek)! That app with the hard keyboard is hard to beat. But is was soooo heavy. I wanted to put a case on it but was worried about it being even heavier. In the end I realized I would never get over it, so I switched. I am happy with my decision!

When I had the Droid, I thought the sound quality was phenomenal. I agree with the end call/lack of physical buttons. That sucks!

I think since the only real reason to switch might be for the screen I might just stick with what I have.. Like I said Honestly I have no real complaints.. things I would like to see should resolve if/when they ever update to 2.x

In this day and age, you expect the Droid to do what it does while looking sleek. The N1 is a perfect example. The physical keyboard sucks, and to compound its suckiness, it is the reason the phone so bulky and oddly shaped. The Eris so small and I love it. I can put it anywhere and it won't slip out or on the other extreme, be a big bulge in my pocket.

The only thing the Droid has over the Eris is the processor being a bit better, that's all. If we get rooted and we can overclock, we can make our phone just as quick.

Lets see what happens with this 2.1 thing. Once that's out, the Droid just has the slight hardware advantage. I don't miss the .5 inch less screen I have since, you know, YouTube isn't working and what not.

I figure the battery issue will be fixed soon as well, maybe with the OS upgrade, or even just a small OTA fix.

I sometimes think "what if" I had the Droid instead of the Eris, but the size of it, the price, and just being 5 months behind in an OS is really not as big a deal as I make it out to be. The Eris's texture and size just feel more refined, like they actually spent time on making it look nice. The internals are just an HTC Hero with a better camera. There was no hard work there for the Eris.

IMO the Droid was a nice phone, nice big display, snappier processor, camera flash etc. The Eris can hold its own against the Droid easily, especially when 2.1 comes to us. I mean Sense it awesome and the trackball and actual buttons are so useful. Both phones have their ups and downs but when it comes down to it, its all about User Preference. You want that sweet screen? Droid it up..... or (if your upgrading) delay and wait for the N1 (or N2 if those Shadow pictures are accurate). =]

I switched and I think I made a good decision..The onlly thing that I think the Eris had over the Droid was the looks and weight. There was no flash on the camera so forget about decent pictures. My main reason for switching is I wanted the physical keyboard but I find I'm more comfortable with the soft keyboard so I guess that doesn't matter, in fact that has become somewhat cumbersome for me now.. I also have more success in watching YouTube in HQ and and really, I just think the Droid is FUN!

Today being the last day of my 30 exchange period, I cannot wait for the N1.. I like the Eris, but might go back again tonight to look at the droid one last time.. my last phone was a RAZR2 and before that was a RAZR, I liked them but knew going to a smart phone it would be a little bit bigger and quite honestly I didn't notice too much weight difference with the Droid vs Eris

Having made the switch, the only things I miss about the Droid are the Hi-Res screen (but I am "satisfied," just not blown away, with the Eris's screen), the 2.0 market place display (sort by paid v. free) and some of the apps in 2.0 (but all this will be moot when we get upgraded to 2.0/2.1 - and if we don't, 1.5 is still adequate), and finally, the swiping on the lock-screen to silence the phone or to ignore a call... but I can do this with the physical buttons.

All in all... I'm SOOOO happy I made the switch. I never got used to the weight/bulkiness of the Droid. And surprisingly now that I've had the Eris for a bit over the month, I'm not even sure if I'd go for the iPhone if Verizon got it. As much as I like Apple products (guilty - I'm an engineer and love the graphics power they offer) and love the apple store, I don't know if I'd be as eager to get one because I find the aesthetics of the HTC more desirable than the iPhone now.

Only things I can think of for switching:

-Newer processor maybe a bit faster
-Hi Res Screen
-Keyboard? might use it might not

Lastly, with the Motorola having a newer processor it might be the better choice since i will keep this phone for 2 years, but both phones will be out of date tomorrow, just like the computer world

Having this same basic question on both here and Moto Droid Section there are benefits to both..

Well, I went to VZW after work, Spent an hour with the Droid.. Talked to the Rep I bought my Eris from. I knew about the $100 more for the droid but was unaware of the $35 restocking fee. in the end I decided that I like the Eris, so I kept it and was able to get $20 back since I paid $199 and it is $179 now then -$100 MIR -50 NE2 so for $30 I have a nice Smart phone, where the Droid would have been $175

I agree with that, with the only caveat being that danged keyboard on the big Droid was nearly useless in my hands.

The Eris flew away and above the Droid on looks, too.

But that's a matter of personal taste.
