Root I have an at&t captivate running stock froyo 2.2. How do I get gingerbread?

I have no idea how to do it. Am I supposed to root first? is rooting necessary? Do I simply download gingerbread somehow without rooting?

Can someone please help me?

Rooting is required to use Titanium backup to backup your apps and whatnot. I did this for the first time a couple weeks ago. Here is what I did.

-Flashed back to stock [How-To] Backup and Factory Restore Samsung Captivate - Android Forums

-Rooted using instructions here http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/120616-captivate-root.html

-Followed instructions to get to stock GB and then flash ROM(I used Mosaic, but you can pick a different one, just check out XDA) {2.3.4 ROM} Mosaic V {Team Phoenix}{6/29/2011} - xda-developers

Also a good idea to check out MobileTechVideos on youtube, very helpful tutorials.

I have a couple questions though. What do you think of this "gingerbread"? was it worth it? or should i just leave my phone rooted?
how exactly do you customize things like the notification bar etc? do you have to buy an app to go with it?

the captivate root thread is from 2010. they are not rooting from 2.2
they are rooting 2.1.

Gingerbread is a lot better than Froyo or Eclair, and I kinda wish I had upgraded sooner. In my opinion, it was well worth it. A different launcher could change the notification bar. There are several free ones and some of those have paid versions to support the devs and get additional options. You could use the first link and go back to stock 2.1 or, just read on XDA, you can use SuperOneClick v1.7 i think if you wanna root 2.2.

Root method:
1. Extract and open Odin3 v1.81.zip and place the zImage-root.tar file in the pda slot.
2. Connect your phone to your PC.
3. Put your phone into download mode (Same as eclair/froyo 3-button combo or adb reboot download)
4. Phone will boot and show the fugu fish.
5. Power off and put your phone into download mode.
6. Place the kernelKF1.tar file in the pda slot and hit start. Phone will reboot.
7. You are now rooted with Stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

this will technically void your warranty with att.

and to backup your phone you would have to root it and install an app such at titanium backup

once on stock GB, all you need to install the ROM is make sure it is in the root of your internal sd and flash it thru recovery.

you will need to flash a kernel that supports cwm

i personally used http://ponack.net/designgears/sgs2/cog5-beta2-kernel.tar
which is the cog5 beta2 kernel. to flash this kernel the easiest thing to do is install sgs kernel flasher from the market and select the kernel once you have downloaded it

then you flash the normal way, by booting into cwm recovery and selecting the .zip


EDIT: i didnt explain the last part well, most roms like mosaic, serendipity, simply gs II, cog 5 all you need to do is boot into recovery and select the .zip. some roms have a few extra steps, well atomic fusion has extra steps im not sure if its the only one or not

what rom are you on in 2.2? and you should be fine to go straight to 2.3.3 with the odin one click, but most people say to be safe you should go back to 2.1 first which is easy enough so i would recommend doing that also

that is the link for the one click back to 2.1, now some people with newer captivates have problems with it. someone explained which phones worked with which version of odin to get back to 2.1 but i dont remember where it was, this does work with most phones though

every time i try to go into debug mode ( download mode) it goes to andriod system recovery. as i stated earlier i want to try out gingerbread. and i'm trying to go back to stock than use the gingerbread in this thread. also i have it in debug mode, take battery out put back in and press the Up/Down button ( same time) while pressing the Power button.

Other than the information below, im not sure about a rom. i don't think i did unless the superoneclick had something in it?


i used the super once click/kies at the end of last year. currently firmware version : 2.2 / Baseband version I897UCJI6/ Kernel version 2.6.32.9 jetaek.lee@sep11 #1/ Build number FROYO.UCJI6.

the method you use is the method to get into recovery. to get into download you pull the battery, reinsert the battery, hold the volume +/-, and plug in the usb cable. you never touch the power button

Here’s what i did, I list the forums I got the info from just to show where I got my info. So you shouldn’t have to go to the forums unless  (you cannot download the files)


First: - get back to eclair 2.1 (Register a Forum account)

[How-To] Backup and Factory Restore Samsung Captivate - Android Forums

Follow these instructions

1. Download Odin One-click Application HERE and unzip it. You'll need the .exe file (Make sure you run Odin in (Run As Administrator), to do this just right click the program).Every time you run Odin throughout this install you Run As Administrator

2. Disable any running antivirus (causes an interrupt during process resulting in bad flash)

3. Make sure to plug USB cable in the back of the computer, for most reliable connection (if using a desktop).

4. If your phone is plugged into your computer, unplug it now.

5. If your phone is not powered down, power it down now.

6. Launch ODIN on PC.

7. Remove battery, SIM, and micro SD from phone.

8. Re-insert the Battery. Boot into download mode by holding both Volume buttons and plugging in the USB. If you get a screen that says "downloading: do not turn off target" with a digging android, you're in download mode.

9. Your phone should show up in ODIN (the box will turn yellow w/ letters and numbers).

10. Click START, and let it finish.

WARNING:
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE UNTIL IT FULLY BOOTS.

Download the following zip file and rename it to update.zip (Rename it to UPDATE, do not put .zip your phone will do that)

Step 1. Connect your phone to your computer and copy the renamed update.zip to the root of your internal memory

Step 2. Unhook phone from USB; Turn the phone off after file transfer is complete

Step 3. Hold both Volume Up and Volume Down while powering on the device to enter the recovery menu (note: let go of the power button after seeing initial boot screen, otherwise it'll continue to power cycle)
