The "Wow" Factor of A500 in Starbucks

They might talk about the Ipad (2) being "cool," but I sure get a lot of stares (and questions) at my Starbucks. I'll show them Need for Speed and talk about how the Ipad 2 can't and won't play quality games like that and does not have the power too anyway. I'll talk about what all the Acer A500 can do and they can see just looking at it! How about your experiences like mine?

I didn't buy my A500 instead of an Apple Ipad 2. I bought it because of the features and my thread was about the questions the general public gives us. I find that people automatically think it's an IPad 2. These tablets are still really rare! Yes, I'm eagerly awaiting Netflix too!

Me neither! I worked out my needs and then found that of the tabs available in my neck of the woods there was only the A500 and the Asus Transformer that matched. Between the two, at least where I am located, the Transformer was/ is expensive and - as others have noted elsewhere - the ports are on the dock on the Transformer. Since I will sometimes be carrying the tab and my laptop together, I figured that the ports on the A500 gave me more flexibility, which is also why I opted for the A500.

I also don't talk to random people at Starbucks.

Except for no NetFlix, I love it.

I'm eagerly awaiting Netflix too!

Wait no longer, my friends! Netflix works!! Check this thread over at xda:

Netflix WORKING Patch! - xda-developers

I've been using it without any issues for the last week and a half :D

-----edit-----

I forgot to comment on the OP... Yes, this humble tablet is a real head-turner. Everyone wants to see and hold it. And I didn't choose the A500 as an alternative to the 'iPaid 2 much'... For me, the iPad was never an option... just didn't appeal to me! I chose it because I liked the hardware capabilities. Let's face it, no current iProduct can touch this beast! And with a price much cheaper than the Xoom (despite nealry identical hardware), it was a no brainer.

I'm sitting here with my phone, keyboard and external hard drive all connected to my iconia, sharing wifi with my phone (also an acer), transferring movies from the external, and typing away to my heart's content. Can't do that with any of the competition's offerings!

The only issue I ran into using the patch is my rear video recorder doesn't work (i get the fc message) when i switch from camera to video within the camera app. But if i go to the camcorder app then it works no problem.

I've read some people are having issues with that, but I've personally never had an issue myself. Perhaps it's a ROM thing? I see you're rooted but with stock. I'm using Tabloonay. Maybe that's the problem?

Maybe, its not a huge deal to me since it still works through the camcorder app itself. Guess I'll find out if it fixes once I pick a rom to try.

I still use the first generation iPhone (3g version) and it still works perfectly for me.
I bought Acer A500 when giving a good thought before buying a tablet-pc. I think it has a great balance between price/performance/features. And I have a feeling that this will last atleast as long as my iPhone does for me.

Only waiting more for very good games. Sure there are few "addicting" ones but I don't think we have seen a game on this platform yet that could really show what it's capable of.

I agree. I still can't find a tab a that has this balance between price/ performance/ features yes, I have looked at the Asus tab, the Samsung (7" though), the Xoom and, of course, the iPad. For my purposes, it seems that I could not have made any other choice at the moment. I too agonized over buying a tablet since I already have what I consider to be a very good 12" laptop (ThinkPad X201). I did not want a primarily media consumption device. I needed something on which I could continue my work - that is, create and modify content.

I also noted something else. I worked out that effectively, I don't really need a high-end "smart phone" IF a basic smart phone (like the one I currently have - Samsung Galaxy Fit) has the following capabilities:

(1) Obviously, make phone calls, receive SMS/ MMS and have at least 3G capabilities (most "modern" phones have all this)
(2) Supports Wifi tethering (I only discovered this capability when I got my tab and after reading these forums!!! :D)
(3) Has good battery life (my Samsung is not very good at this though - so investing in a spare battery may be an option)
(4) Meshes well with the tab (which the Samsung GF does very well)

So, why would I go for a high-end "smart phone". And, yes, I prefer carrying two devices at all times.

Cheers!

Was over at my neighbour's house a while back and he brought out his iPad to impress me (he has Apple everything). I left that evening not being overly impressed with a machine that lacked any ports and I could not quite see a use for it.

I recently got my A500 and can now see how much it is front of the iPad by and can't wait to get the neighbour over for a rematch.
