Accessories 64GB Micro SDXC Card?

Kingmax flaunts world's first 64GB microSD card -- Engadget

According to the thread above, Kingmax has made a micro SD card that carries 64GB.

I remember when I first got my Evo back in October reading the reviews and specs and seeing that it only supported up to 32GB of external memory.

Needless to say, I'm running out of room on my 16GB card and wanted to upgrade to a 32GB but why when I could get a 64GB card?

In the thread, there's a debate with one side saying current phones can't read SDXC but others are saying that it is a file type which can be changed to match the specs of current phones...so I guess my question is, which side is right?

This article is about 2 months old so I thought maybe people might know now. And I added this in the Evo 4G forum instead of general Android as I wanted to know mostly for my phone so I could buy it and use it when it becomes available.

I do not think that you will be able to run an SDXC card in your Sprint HTC EVO 4G. That is not the same standard as the SDHC cards that it can accept now.

Most handsets today are limited to 32 GB microSD cards which use the SDHC standard. I am certain that newer handsets that come out will accept the SDXC standard in the future though.

It seems so.

The argument made on the article is that SDXC is simply a file type which can be changed easily which would allow it to be used with SDHC reading devices. Such as FAT32 vs. other types which can be changed easily through formatting.

Is it true that it is simply another type and can be changed through a format or another method? Or are SDXC and SDHC types that are hardware instead of software?

Everything Ive read points to it being a software change. Its a way of compressing more data onto the same disc.

Basically, SDXC uses a different file system called exFAT. Technically, if the handset were able to understand the file structure of exFAT as well as had a new set of drivers to recognize that it was, in fact, an SDXC card, it would work.

I do not believe any current handset can recognize the exFAT file system. However, if all of the above were to fall into place and the code and drivers were rewritten for any given handset to interpret those specifications and that file system, you could, in theory, run an SDXC card in an older handset, but it would be limited to the maximum speed standards set by the SDHC type of microSD cards.

I can't fathom needing 32GB of real estate on a phone, let alone 64, but I'm not you.

Just guessing here, but I'd think if you format to a compatible file system the card will revert to 32GB, but still work.

Considering cost, I think I'd prefer the minor hassle of just carrying a spare card in my wallet.

I kinda figured it would be something like that if anything.

Okay, that makes more sense. Thanks!

I am looking at a 64gb card for my future galaxy note.
If i understand this correctly, for a sdxc card to work in any device, it just needs a proper software update from the operatin system point of view.

That means we need to ask google to add support for microsdxc card in future android version. Like they added suport for microdsd card on android 3.0 tablets when they upgraded them to 3.1.

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

A couple of people are reporting that formatting their 64GB SDXC cards to Fat32 was all that was required for them to work in their Galaxy SII's. I have one on order now, so can confirm or refute this sometime in the next week (hopefully, expedited shipping should help).

Yes, please do inform us once you get it. I'd like to get one because I am running out of room on my 16GB and want to upgrade but beyond 32GB as my iTunes library is 27.40GB already :p I could use the extra space haha.

Thank you NZ! And thank you for giving a quick tutorial on how to use it. Much appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking, which website did you buy yours from? I'm going to start looking for the best price for this so I can get my hands on one.

At the moment they are only available from Sandisk direct, so the best price=the only price at the present time. Clove Technologies in the UK have indicated they will be selling them soon too, so other sellers and some competition on pricing can't be too far off.

If you're outside the US you can still order from Sandisk's US online store using a mail-forwarding service like Shipito (I'm in New Zealand). I've used Shipito a few times now and have no complaints.

Very cool. Well lucky for me I'm in the US so it won't be a problem. Thank you so much. I'm going to look right now.

The San disk works in Galaxy sll correct?

The thread started out asking about the Kingmax. i might of had too many Starbucks but i don't know if that other brand works.
My phone is an Evo 4G so i take it that 32GB is my limit.

Knowing little or nothing about codes, language, programs, apps, or any of that tek stuff at all i do however wonder if it is not possible to write the instruction to correct the limitation on the Evo and other Droids which may not currently have the ability to use the 64GBSDXC card.
Once again indulge my ignorance for a moment and tell me if i got the basics as to why we "root" "flash" and basically in other words change the instructions that the phone makers and the service providers decide need to what we get for the money.

i'd be the first to admit that not understanding what makes limits limits leaves me to thining way outside the box where anything is possible.

In the thread about what app would you like to see/have/be available i find it very interesting that most of what people want are pretty simple requests and similar in many ways to what is already out there in the Market.
i would like an app that makes calling/texting/viewing pictures of certain people exposed to the smell that you associate with that person. A dog would have every person smell like bacon. i would probably have a few bacons but i would have a few fresh trouts as well. But what are the chances that we will see the smell app soon?
But not all app ideas would have to be so far fetched. Maybe an app that will convert the usability of a non sdxc phone to one that will recognize it.
Maybe it's not an app...maybe it's a surgical move that can be performed via the same cable that we use to charge the phone from out computer as well as access files.
Love that STARBUCKS ! and Espresso's of another kind.

Thanks for laughing! ;-}>

If you read through the thread here, you will see the last couple of posts by NZtechfreak and he confirms buying one from ScanDisk and reformatting it and it working in his phone.

I also have an HTC Evo 4G and plan to buy one of these but have yet to see it. Check out his and others' posts on this thread.

As for rooting and why we do it...it's for different reasons really. If you read through the "Rooting For Dummies" sticky thread on the All Things Root forum, you will see more reasons why people do and the advantages it has.

Didn't watch the video the first time around. It mentions the Galaxy SII's. In a different post somewhere I read that the Evo's limit was 32 gig. Maybe a 64 gig didn't exist then. However from what I've read so far all phones are not created equal so since I don't have a Galaxy and time management is always a consideration; i didn't watch the video.

As time allows i'll look for answers in those threads that you mention.

Thanks

In this thread, there was a huge debate as to whether phones could read over their said allowed maximum and if the difference in devices was due to a software or hardware difference.

To anyone unfamiliar with the difference...a piece of hardware is the physical piece of the device that is manufactured. Software is apart of the device's internal mainframe and can be altered much more easily by non-developers than a hardware change often is.

Our debate above circled around whether the devices would be able to rread the card if we did a software change (format the card) or if we'd need to get a hardware change.

NZ finises the debate by showing us that its as simple as changing software. The Galaxy is supposed to read 32GB max like our Evos so he formatted the card to a different type. This allowed his phone to uuse it and from there we've determined that it is a software difference and if you format the card, you should be ale to use the card. I understand that the Evo is much different so we'll have to wait and see if this is a universal method. His posts would be the ones that I would check as they seem to have the mmost information in this thread.

Ok, so we cleared the fact now that one can simply do a format and the card works.
But having a screenshot that says 59.46gb free does not tell the whole story.

Having looked today on amazon.com at king max microsdhc 64gb i have found the following comments:

After a week of use the drive had unusual performance (unmounts randomly, files won't open, sudden sluggish performance). Initially a scan disk would recover most of the data, but eventually I needed to do a reformat of the disk. Over 2 weeks I went through this same cycle twice (bad performance & then no functionality). I tried NTFS and ExFat had the same result. I lost about 20 hours of work the first time it happened, second time I just put music on it and lost that too. Other users of my computer are able to use 64GB Micro SDXC without problems, so concluding that the media is at fault.
Very unhappy with the product:
I thought a 64GB was too good to be true
1- I cannot format it more than 32 gb, tried all kind of formatting options on my mac with 2 different usb adaptors: sfat, fat32, mac os extended etc
2- I lost all the data on it for no reason
3- now I am scared using it for me not to lose all my data again

I will try to replace it to see if they have a newer version which is more stable, if not i'll try to claim my money back
Using it in my Motorola Android RZR phone and every few days I get a message saying "SD Card Damaged. You may have to reformat it". I reformat it and the error comes back after a few days. Not sure if it's the cards fault or the phones, but it doesn't work for me.

Question now from NZTechFreak (believe it or not i have met him in real life, he wears glasses :) )

Do you experience similar problems, or does it work flawlessly ?
