Root Easy question

Hey, i search the forum, didn't find anything. so i apologize if this is repeated.

I have my phone rooted, and broke my screen, its still usable, but the people responsible are paying for it. my question is, do you think i need to unroot before i take it in?

no i do not think that it is necessary to do that as they usually do not care to much if it is rooted. the only time if they care is if it is a software issue that you did because you messed up rooting it or flashed something and it boinked your phone. if it is a hardware issue you should be good to go. here check this out:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/382003-sprint-service-repair-policy-facts.html

7. If you bring you rooted phone in for software issues expect to get it back unrooted and flashed to the latest software. If it's hardware it's up to the tech but policy is no repairs are to be started til after the phone is unrooted and flashed to the latest software.

it really depends on the tech that you bring your phone in to. i was able to make friends with one of the techs at my sprint store so he is cool with my phone being rooted. but i think that you can go one of two routes.
1. flash the stock gingerbread rooted rom:Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!!
2.or unroot and take it. justtell them you do not want the update when all things are done.

i've never unrooted. is it a hassle? and when you unroot do you lose anything as in, do you have to wipe it?

yes.. you loose everything...

make a nandroid backup before you unroot.

then when you get your phone back..
Root
and restore nandroid

you can use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide to unroot. you can find it in the after rooting section. if you have any questions on the process please feel free to ask.

So turns out i just have to call the sprint insurance company, pay the deductible, and they overnight me a new phone. So i'll just wipe the phone and send the broken one back. They don't repair the screens in the store anymore apparently.

can you not root GB? Can you not roll back? The only reason i even see to root it is to have the tethering ability. (without using PDAnet)

nope and here is why:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...cant-root-your-gingerbread-2-3-3-evo-yet.html. the only way to roll back is if you still have s-off with the new hboot thatupdating gingerbread gives you (hboot 2.16).

sorry.... if you get a phone from insurance... most likely 2.3 will be on it.
it is currently not rootable... they have been working on it for weeks.

i am surprised it has not been hacked yet!

did you take it to a sprint corporate repair center???? not all sprint sites are corporate and very few are real repair centers.

So i had to go through the Insurance company (since i have the insurance on my phone) which is through Asurion. They sent me a brand new Evo 4g overnight. It being ordered on a friday, i got it today. Just powered it on..

Software: 4.24.651.1

For whatever reason I can't get into recovery mode to check the hBoot version.

The only reason i rooted my phone was to have the free wifi teathering and the screenshot app. I know pdaNet works well so i would just use that if i didn't root. I have been rooted for about 7 months and thats all i really use. are there any other reasons why i should root, aside from just free teathering?

If you go to settings>power uncheck fastboot then power off your phone and hold volume down+power and it should take you to your hboot. I am willing to bet though that you have hboot 2.16 and will have to wait to root. Hopefully not too long though. Sounds like they are getting close and with the newer phones rooted, they are spending more time on the Evo.

There are alot of reasons to root. Free wifi and bloatware removal are only a couple of them. Custom roms, ported roms from other devices, Sense 2.1 and 3.0(which will never officially come to the Evo 4g), themes, mods and basically personalizing the phone the way you want it not the way Sprint wants you to have it. Some things take alot of reading the accomplish, others are a matter of flashing a theme that someone else has put together and shared.

PDANet is ok. I used to for internet when I had a BB. Rooting gives you the option to have your phone work as a hotspot so more than one user can access the internet wirelessly through your phone. As an example, my wife went to Tennessee earlier this year. My twins and their older sister were able to access the internet on all of their computers by turning on the hotspot on my wifes Evo while she was driving.

I rely on my phone for emails and many of my apps on a daily basis so I hate having to wipe my phone. My evo right now(I haven't activated the new one on GB yet) is sooo sluggish. Sucks. And what the hell were they thinking with the tiny internal storage. I do use add to sd, but still suck. Oh well

another thing that you can do to help on internal memory, is when you are rooted you can also partition you sd card (though you need a class 4 or higher card). i'm on the mik3d a1 rom and i have 150 apps and i still have 355mb free of internal memory! pure amazing on how the devs can think outside the box!

Damn, 150 apps. Very nice. And 355mb free on internal memory is awesome. I'm on CM7 with just a few extra apps and I don't think I have that much internal memory. I should look into a high class SD card sometime....

well ok i downloaded a few more apps today so i did not check, but it is now 158 apps and 301 mb internal memory.

but if you are going to buy one check out the patriot 16g class 10 card. Newegg.com - Patriot LX Series Class 10 16GB Micro SDHC Flash Card Model PSF16GMCSDHC10 (16GB) i love my card. i have had no issues with this beast.

I would unroot it just to be safe. You don't want them trying to charge you for anything if they get a bug in their butt about it. As far as the card, that is your call. If it was me and the new phone came with a card, I would copy my stuff off of it, wipe it and send it with the returned phone.

+1 on the Patriot 16gb Class 10 card. Got one myself a while back and no issues at all with it.

i'll wait on buying a new card. the 8gb is sufficient enough for now, esp if there's not root for GB. So i wont be able to partition it for the extra internal memory.

Also, thank you all for all the responses, i'm still somewhat a noob with the android rooting. There's a lot more to it it seems than jailbreaking itouches which is where i started with this type of stuff.
