Installed CyanogenMod 7 - HTC Hero freezes on white screen

I just rooted (first time ever) my HTC Hero (Sprint) phone and used ROM Manager to install CyanogenMod 7. Upon re-booting the phone always freezes at the white screen ("htc" in green font). I've pulled and re-inserted the battery in order to reboot, no luck, still freezes.

Any ideas?

Well I'm brand-new at the rom flashing , but what i found was i had the same problem first time and i ended up clearing user data and it went straight off to working !!!

I already cleared (partitioned) my sd card, if that's what you mean. Otherwise, how do I clear my user data if I can't get the phone to boot?

You probably meant to do a factory reset, because after getting back into recovery mode by pressing HOME and ON buttons simultaneously, and then doing a factory reset, CyanogenMod came up just fine (without needing to re-install), similar to what you described.

First thing is, make sure once you were rooted I hope you created a Nandroid back up in recovery mode, Rom Manager is simply used to flash your recovery image. Once you have your back up, then you do a full wipe factory reset, then clear cache, then clear Davlik. then you instal Rom zip from SD card, once done then you install Gapps from SD card, then once done then you reboot.

Mine keeps freezing at the CM7 screen and I cant get it into recovery!
Any suggestions!!

Did you flash a receovery ?
Did you accidently Format the recovery?

No idea what I did but I got it all running.
I'm completely new to this... and it's kind of cool I guess.
But I really don't see what the advantage to this is.
The new ROM is cool... but I don't know if it's as efficient as the stock ROM.
All I truly wanted with rooting the phone was the ability to delete all of the the sprint installed apps that I never use and free up memory.
I was used to the stock ROM and setting.
I don't really see a whole lot of additional benefits to using the CyanogenMod.

Just a few of the benefits of CM7 IMO are the ability to overclock, the ability to run apps that require 2.2 or higher, and the fact that the ROM is much snappier in performance than stock ever was.
