Use the Android Market, as usual. All Root does is give you additional access to the phone so you can remove the bloatware like the VZW apps and also lets you install apps from the Market that require root access.

I need some help please.

It looks like I was successful in rooting my LG Vortex phone using GingerBreak. Everything worked as explained in the thread. I go to the app drawer and there is Superuser where it should be.

However, there are no apps in the list within Superuser, it's blank. I can't uninstall the Verizon apps that I'd want to eliminate, and I can't delete them with root explorer either.

What am i doing wrong?

Day three of trying everything I can think of and still no root access. . . every time I use ginger break the phone un-mounts the SD card, I'm thinking that it why it's not working.

I've tried formatting the SD card, tried two other SD cards, and every time the same thing, the SD card un-mounts when i start ginger break. Can someone please help me?

I checked using Adao File Manager and all my permissions are still the same (-r-) for my files but I have the su binary and SuperUser.apk installed in the right places. Could it be temp rooting?
I have tried rooting and unrooting multiple times with Gingerbreak 1.1, 1.2, and Z4Root 1.3. None succeed at rooting in the sense that my file are still read only.
One other odd thing, I have used su in a Terminal emulator to try and manually chmod my app folder in order to delete bloatware and I get the message that "the filesystem is read-only."

What does all this mean?

Yes I finally did get it resolved.

First get Titanium Backup and install it & create a backup of your phone in its current state.

Next, make sure your phone has USB debugging turned on.

Next, install gingerbreak and run it. If all goes well the phone will re-boot indicating root access.

Finally, open Titanium and scroll through the installed apps and un-install or delete whatever files/apps you want to.

****WARNING!!!! IF YOU DELETE OR UNINSTALL THE WRONG APPS/FILES YOU CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE*******

I only uninstalled the Verizon bloat apps that were bugging me; all V-Cast apps, Tetris, Slacker, Skype, Scrabble, & Kindle. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch. I downloaded Titanium Backup and it didn't work at first. Then I selected the reload app option and updated SuperUser and it said I had root access and let me delete Scrabble. I am currently backing up the rest of my phone before I delete the rest of the Verizon apps. Are there any dependencies on Bing? It bugs me that it always comes up because I'm a google fan through and through.

I had the same problem JimiHendrix had above. Gingerbreak1.2 would hang after unmounting the SD card. I found elsewhere that the code actually says that the SDcard must be clean. I put a different SD card in the phone (I could of used the same one but I didn't want to lose the data), umounted it, formatted it, and then mounted it again. Re-ran Gingerbreak and it worked like a charm.

Just a quick message to verify gingerbreak v1.2 still working fine to root my old dusty LG Vortex running 2.2.2. Not much to it, left my sd card in, wasn't re-formatted and it left all of my saved data untouched...hope this might help any other fellow root noobs out there! Backup your sd card just in case if you try this though, would hate for anyone to lose data.

Nevermind... I found the apk for GingerBreak on [App] [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

Thanks though 2bit. Any tips on a good guide for running it? I've found several, but I'm looking for something a little more noob friendly.

I'm just looking to delete bloatware and such from the phone. Will GingerBreak install a custom ROM?

I couldn't figure out how to install GingerBreak on the phone after reading through this forum (maybe I missed something).... So I tried rooting with the LG Vortex Utility from Rainbowdash (thanks btw).

I got some errors that flew by on the screen and I wasn't able to catch them all, but it said something like couldn't mount and then it said it was rooted. Any idea how I can check? Also, how do you install Gingerbreak on the phone and not the SD card. I'm having trouble getting the apk to the internal memory as the guide says to do... Thanks for any help!

You should be able to google some pretty good beginner level tuts of what all is possible after rooting. I haven't had issues with anything being buggy on mine yet, and after scrapping all that bloatware I could tell a major difference in speed when using my phone.
