Not happy at all

Being pretty much a newbie to this phone modding lark, I've just installed HTC's 2.3 and it works a treat. This might put the cat among the pigeons, but I feel more secure installing a software version from the phone's manufacturer (over-cautiously labelled as 'developer only') than a ROM created by a hobbyist I do not know.

Give HTC a break. The desire is a relatively old phone now. You could criticise them for not putting more memory in it in the first place, but they've obviously tried hard to squeeze 2.3 onto a phone that does not have enough memory. And the way they've released it has real benefits to the consumer - you can completely bypass your network, and their meddling with the firmware on YOUR phone. Sure you have to wipe the phone and plug in a cable, but that was standard for phone updates only a couple of years ago.

The things they've left off are clever too - nothing you will miss, or can't restore yourself easily. No wallpapers, no teeter app, no network bloat. The flashlight app is left out, but they even include that in the zip file as an apk file so you can add it straight in.

If they'd released this to the general public, people would have gone crazy about missing wallpapers etc - they haven't had much choice but to do it this way. To be honest, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. They've tried to take a middle path to please everyone, and they're being shot down in flames for it.

Easychord.

Do you have something to wake up your phone with the hardware buttons?
Something like widgetlocker? I hate it to unlock the phone with the power button and only with one hand. After the update none of the buttons work. Only the volume up and down when charging. Do you have the same experience? Because it looks like that is going to be problem for me since I don't know any alternatives?

anybody else?

Yes, mine only wakes from the power button too, then a swipe down to unlock. No other physical buttons wake the screen. I couldn't tell you if it was the same before though - I've always used the power button to unlock it anyway. If it's a change it doesn't bother me, but it might bother others. Could be awkward if you've got small hands or fine motor problems.

Never tried widgetlocker - don't know what that is.

@easychord:
I think the only criticism is that the independent devs have released this version of android (2.3.3) with this version of Sense months ago, without needing to remove those apps. That's what puzzles me: HTC have a lot more resources, so why do they find this difficult?

But you are quite right that an update like this is better delivered this way, rather than over the air to people who don't even know that there's something called "gingerbread".

You've also hit on something that I'd been wondering about this evening: this is an official HTC release which "debrands" the phone, so what happens if someone with a network-branded phone installs it? My guess is that you'll need a goldcard to install it on a branded phone (RUUs to date have always checked cid - I suspect the networks will not be happy if HTC have released a one-click debranding tool). If that's true, then might the networks refuse to honour the waranty on a branded handset if you install this?

I'm not trying to spread FUD here - it's just that my own network is Orange UK, and I can easily imagine them taking that attitude (one reason I only buy unbranded handsets - that way the phone is nothing to do with them). Conversely, if they are happy to accept that this is official software, then this RUU would provide a warranty-saving unroot for Orange-branded handsets, which is something we lack at the moment. I don't really believe it will be that easy though - best to assume that installing this one is the same as debranding via any RUU (which I'm sure Orange would not accept).

Hadron - I think Orange would legally find it very hard to decline a warranty if you've updated the firmware with a new one provided by the manufacturer. I bet they'd try though, they're awful to deal with, but if you pushed them they wouldn't have a leg to stand on. There's no mention at all about voiding any warranty on the HTC agreement you need to tick when you download 2.3.

I got my phone off ebay anyway, so I'm not too worried about that... :)

I might actually give it a go based on this. Like most, It Is mainly the extra space I am after. Also, Is there an improved radio? My signal has always been very poor

I'm pretty sure that if you debrand using an existing Froyo RUU they'll try to refuse warranty. This one might have a different status - the subtext is that a network-specific version is unlikely - which is the thing that had me wondering. But I don't know, just wondering.

Fairly sure I saw a T-mobile tweet quoted yesterday saying that installing this would invalidate your warranty. Don't see how they could though - one for trading standards I reckon.
Installing a debranded FroYo RUU is another thing because you need to use a Goldcard to bypass the CID checks, by the sounds of things you don't need that for this one. Might wait until it is confirmed that this can be rooted / reversed before installing myself though.

Hi everyone, We are not offering our own version of the 2.3 download for the HTC Desire which has been developed by HTC for the developer community, however it is available to download directly from the manufacturers website developer.htc.com

Please note that this download has been designed specifically for the developer community and will change various settings on your handset. Full details can be found on HTC's website

Regards David M T-Mobile Forum Team.

I downloaded and installed it Monday on my t-mobile branded handset and it works perfectly and debranded it in the process

There are loads of rooted versions of this already. There's no benefit really of going official imo

I would argue that the main benefit is that you can install it in 15 mins with barely any technical knowledge at all, unlike rooting which you yourself have said should not be taken lightly and requires doing hours of research first.

For me the official update fixed pretty much everything that irritated me about the phone's software. I would say that the same is true for most average users who aren't necessarily interested in all the other technical stuff that rooting and custom ROMS can do. I totally appreciate that there's lots of fun to be had with it, but for me the official update has removed the need to root.

T-Mobile Discussions - Discussions - Desire 2.3 (Gingerbread) update released... sort of

" The warranty on your handset would be invalidated and it's possibility that you may "brick" your phone...worst case scenario. :-("

So, another company that hasn't got a clue...

But, I can't see how applying a manufacturer-approved update could invalidate a warranty meself...

Same here, I decided to try the official Gingerbread first before rooting my phone to see if it would provide better performance.

Now Widgetlocker does not work anymore after installing Gingerbread and I installed Widgetlocker for exactly the same reason as you did.

Tried to root my phone yesterday, got an error about firmware too new but just read that I should try Unrevoked 3.21. Gonna try that, hate the unlocking with the power button. That alone is reason for me to root my Desire.

As Rastaman has pointed out, there is a way if you prepare in advance.

S-Off and install the current alpharev Stock hboot. The new alpharev hboots are not replaced by an RUU, so the phone remains S-Off. You can then fastboot flash a custom recovery, and use that to install superuser - the same procedure we use for hboot 1.06 devices. Don't know whether anyone's done it yet, but it should work

Of course you need to root and S-Off before installing the update to have this option, and have the right hboot in place first, so it's not something that can be done after the fact.

What's wrong with using the power button. That's all I ever use to wake my phone? Even if you long press it you simply get options for powering the phone?

In fact other buttons waking the phone can be a pain!

It's pure practical for me. I have a protective rubber cover on my Desire since I tend to drop my phone on the floor every once in a while (I'm clumsy, can't be fixed with any upgrade). The downside is that it also protects the power button and makes it more difficult to press.

The trackball is easily acessible though, that's why I had Widgetlocker. Easy unlocking is the only thing I like about the Iphone and I was glad it worked on my Deisre... until Gingerbread installation.
