Help Auto Brightness Question

Anyone notice that if you have auto brightness checked on the screen ever so slightly fluctuates in brightness level (without any change in ambient light)? It's noticeble enough for me to pick up on it every time it happens, kind of annoying. It will dip down in brightness for a few seconds then go back. Is this an ANDROID thing or do I have a defective phone? It's not something easily noticeable and not very repeatable.

So it's an HTC issue then? I actually like the autobrightness feature, is this something they are working on to fix? Or just a bad light sensor?

functions as designed. the amount of light that hits the light sensor fluctuates all the time, unless you've got the phone facing a big solid-colored wall. Even little tilts of your phone means new light is hitting the sensor... a little reflection here, glare there, brighter background, etc.

Actually, I'd say that the E3D's auto brightness is performing much better than my E4G. The transitions are much more gradual with the E3D that I rarely notice it.

its the sensor. its not a defect. this has happened across the htc hero the evo 4g and the 3D. if it annoys you just remove the auto setting and set it manually.

also, you gain a bit of battery power if you just have it set on a manual setting.

I always thought by using the auto setting it would use less battery. You sure about that?

If it does indeed use more I can't see why anyone would actually want to use it. It's very annoying.

Manual can save or burn more energy depending on where you set it, obviously.

Wife's iphone is set to manual and dim to save battery. Her auto tends to be too bright. I guess we see flaws where we want to.

please, every handset maker uses different techniques. each of those handsets are built differently. i would say the antenna placement on the latest iphone makes it faulty, however what does that add to this discussion? :)

hmm, i would say it's a flaw, i don't have this issue with my Iphone or Palm Pre. But not a big deal i guess.

if you continually go in and out of dim/bright locations the brightness increases/decreases, which uses more energy over the screen being one set brightness level. in addition, the photo diode that "looks" at light levels has to be energized constantly. one thing ive noticed with the 3D is the brightness changes are smoother whereas the evo 4G has less steps in between light level change so the changes would be more noticeable albeit not DRAMATIC...

to move this discussion forward, if one feels its an "issue" or "defect" is encouraged to e-mail HTC and go into a corp store and have them check it. have them test it against another handset/demo headset in the store. just posting here asking if others see it is one way to gauge what people think, however take it a step further and contact the manufacturer and Sprint. :)

You're just holding the iPhone wrong! The antenna is fine! :p

Back on point, I would think that the photo diode would be energized all the time, anyways. Or, at least, if auto brightness is on or there is an active phone call. Or is there a seperate proximity sensor? I don't make phone calls in the dark, so I honestly don't know if it doubles, but I would imagine it would.

Honestly though, a diode consumes so little power that it would probably be more efficient having a sensor diode on all the time than a control circuit to determine if it should be on or not.

Having an issue with the screen dimming when it isn't supposed to. It happens all the time no matter what I'm doing. I can be scrolling through a web site and it will dim regardless of my finger moving to scroll. It will then randomly brighten back up. I know that it should dim right before it turns off the screen from not being used but that's not the case here. It's while it is being used. I'd say too that the level of dim isn't as much as it is before the screen goes off. I thought maybe it was my eyes (that's scary) but the wife has noticed it too.

Go to Menu>Settings>Display>Brightness and uncheck Automatic Brightness.

See if that makes a difference. If not, change the screen timeout to two minutes.
