Root How should I install CM7?

I have always wanted to run CM7 on my DX. But I like to run ROMs in the long term, not change them all the time (nightlies don't count IMO).

I will be coming from my DX on 2.3.3 running the stock android deodexed to run the BWC 2.3.3 theme with launcherpro... which seems to be DEAD :(

I have also re-written many of the stock apps to .bak (and would like to know if I need to write them back to .apk before I do anything).

SO, should I just follow the usual pattern of back-up > wipe data, cache, delvik > SBF to 2.3.340 > z4root/bootstrap D2 > download the normal file on rootzwiki

OR am I in a position to use the MONSTER.zip and skip the whole SBF thing. If I do this should I still change my .bak apps to .apk in root explorer?

One last thing, what is GAPPS?

If you are of any help, as always I appreciate it and am truly grateful. This site keeps me coming back whenever I hear of good news in the modding community and I see it as THE site for info on android, period.

so the all-in-one CM7 monster.zip is a no-go...

Where can I find the latest nightly? All that I see is a mirror to the CM7.zip

Get that, the all-in-one fix.zip and the gapps.zip? Seems like a lot of files.

Any other input? Otherwise, seems like something for the weekend.

I would like to be a guide. I'm sure it wouldn't take much convincing to become one however you stated my exact situation.

Most of the time i can monitor this site all day. However i do travel for my job up to 80% a year. Often times i am 14 hours ahead of my home time zone (central) and while on travel i work up to 84 hours a week and so during that time i don't get to monitor the site as much.

I enjoy helping out in multiple sections ..ie...Inc2, DX2, D3, DX and hopefully soon the Bionic.

but yeah the last time when you guys got upgraded to guides i thought about asking for one but i didn't want to waste a guide spot if i couldn't be on here all the time.

SBF to FroYo .340
Root
Droid2 Bootstrap
clear cache and data
flash the latest nightly for CM7
flash the all-in-one fix
use your phone

so these steps + gapps, then use phone, no need to install the base CM7, just flash the latest nightly? Is there a way to stay up to date with the nighltlies w/o using rom manager?

I figured it out...google+apps=gapps

LAST QUESTION: Does GPS work now?

Anyway, I think that this is one of the best things to come to the DX in a LONG time. Will install when I have time...as in tomorrow.

Yes there is, just go to the first post of this thread, there is a link to direct download the nightlies.

That's how I do it, I don't like Rom Manager.

you know you can actually PM a mod and ask for the opportunity. mods have more say than guides do

DONE!

Three issues: None of my market apps transferred with my google account...real bummer, and none of my contacts with vzw synched. HOW CAN I FIX THIS?

The camera button takes me to the camera app, but when I press it to take a picture, nothing happens. Only the touch screen button works.

The Nexus live wallpaper isn't working as of now?

You have to install the all in one fix to fix the camera/camcorder and video playback.

You can log into android.market.com and install your apps through there.

Add your google account to accounts and sync your numbers.

The only apps that should transfer with your Google account are the ones that you've purchased. You should be able to open the market, click your menu button, then click My Apps and they should all be there, you just have to download them again. Everything else that you hathat was free, you'll have to search for and download again. Once you've got all your apps inatalled that you want, I highly recommend installing Titanium Backup from the market. You can backup all of your apps and the data with them. Then, whenever you switch roms, you can just download Titanium backup again and restore all of your apps with all othe data. This will save a lot of time, especially if you change roms often.

As far as the contacts, you might have to go to settings--> accounts, then click on your google account and enable contacts sync. When I installed CM7 for the first time, mine wasn't enabled by default.

The camera button is exactly as you stated. It will bring up the camera app, but won't take the picture. You just have to use the onscreen button for now.

I can't really comment on the Nexus Live wallpaper because I've never tried it and I can't remember right now if I've read anything about it in the thread. You might skim through it to see if it's mentioned (although, even skimming through it will probably take some time).

Hope this info helps you out. It really is an awesome rom!
