In Contacts , press the options key. Choose import/export and then export to SD card.
Thats only to import/export contacts to/from sd card. This will not do anything for SMS messages.
I have read several threads on attempts to connect the Spica to the PC for saving / managing / synchronizing contacts, SMS, calendar. etc.
Amazingly, it seems the bottom line is that
there is no real way to do it.
ABSOLUTLY UNBELIEVABLE!
- No version of Samsung's PC Studio / New PC Studio recognizes Spica (I have personally tried 4 versions, including tricks with combining Kies USB drivers).
- Contacts and calendar can only be synched through gmail.com
- Files (media, notes) can be copied from the SD Card by "mounting" the Spica as a drive of the PC.
- It seems there is NO WAY to transfer SMS messages, to the PC.
requests / questions:
- Please tell me I am wrong!
- My Spica has Android 2.1. Will other versions do any better with PC Studio?
- Is there any work-around to transfer SMS messages to the PC?

It is possible to back up SMS messages but not to a PC, you can use an app (there are plenty on market but PI.Soft Backup works for me)
You can get your phone recognised by a PC, but only to access the SD card, not to do anything that would be 'management' IE view/sort contacts, SMS/MMS, pictures.
You can access your SD card as i said, but this just lets you treat it as a removable flash drive, so you can copy/paste pictures, music, files, etc via this method.
I believe its the same on 2.2 - in short, the samsung software as i remember it is simply useless, and the only thing you get out of it are possible the right drivers to be able to connect your phone and be recognised.
My last point is that as you mention installing and uninstalling 4 different versions of samsung software, it should be pointed out that this is not as simple as you may think. Simply because most files and settings (regestry values are kept in the registry evan after an uninstall. So ... to uninstall 'properly' i would reccomend the following procedure.
1) Run samsung uninstall wizard.
2) Reboot
3) Navigate to the samsung install folder (c:\program files\samsung\nps\ ... or similar) and delete pretty much everything you can including the samsung folder.
4) Run something that will clean your registry, i use part of a pc program from system mechanic that works well.
this should ensure that all files and even references for samsung software are removed so that a clean install will actually be a clean install, and not just a different version number showing up on top of old software and settings making no difference to your 'old' install.
Of course i could be wrong and the samsung software might well now work great, but hopefully this helps you understand a bit better.
