Accessories Replacement battery

Hi guys.

Can anyone recommend the best place in the UK to buy a replacement battery for the Desire Z? Does it have to be the same battery as is already in?

Also, to save me starting a new thread, is there a widget for toggling 3G on and off? I feel like it should be staring me in the face, but I can only find ones for wifi, bluetooth etc.

when adding a widget, choose 'settings' - there you can find many toggle widgets etc.
what u need is the 'mobile network' widget

You can try play.com for a battery. I believe the "genuine" ones are the HTC branded ones, but do some research because I'm not 100% on that.

i wouldnt trust that to be honest.. i recently bought the same thing for my HTC wildfire from ebay. (took nearly 2 months before it arrived) ive had them a few days now, they're really handy too, when my phone gets flat i just pull out the replacement battery and BAM, fully charged. but i feel like the power of the battery isnt as it says it is, its not lasting as long as it was 3 days ago, my 1300mah battery seems to be doing a better job. ive also noticed that im having a few problems with the phone since i got those batteries, like the screen flickered a few times.. but maybe thats just me being paranoid and jumping to conclusions. Theres no harm in trying them out though as their not expensive. (on the 2 batteries i got it says that their for the droid eris, dont know if that matters or not though?)

I got a mugen replacement battery for my HTC Legend, it did last roughly the amount longer for the percentage improvement it was over the original battery (i forget).

I have only had my desire z two days, but it's not even lasting throughout a whole day, so am seriously considering getting one of those batteries as it looks like an improvement of nearly 40% from the original battery. So 10 hours of use on original and you should see nearly 14 hours on replacement, plus you will have a spare.

I see they havent got any in stock at the minute, so will leave it and see if charging and discharging the battery a few times helps to improve the overall life of it.

Avoid cheap chinese imports these are more than likely to not volt correctly and cause faults if not kill your handsets, they are cheap for a reason.

On a side note the hinge is a little bit loose, but i'd rather have it a bit looser than like it was on the n97 with a snappy shut feel to it.

Overall pleased with the device, when I first started using it through hmm should I have gone for the HD, but am liking it the more I am web browsing with the keyboard open. (plus only a 12month contract so can renew next Dec).

Also compared to the legend angry birds is a lot smoother, don't forget you've got the Seasonal Angry Birds on the android market now, if anyone has 5 mins they want to kill.

@benbird7 - I had an improvement in my battery life after around 2 weeks. not a great improvement, but still an improvement.
And i'm very satisfied with my choice, the DHD is not an option because of it's battery life. the DZ lasts a complete day with my usage (~16 hours).

Please let us know if you buy the mugen battery, and how satisfied you are with it, im also thinking of buying it.

Certainly will keep you posted, I have been on several sites about conserving battery power, but most of the things are what I done with my legend anyway, like turning off wifi, bluetooth etc when not in use. Also turning off vibration feedback and screen brightness down.

Quick checklist below, to those who haven't tried these things also on another webpage it stated what I have put on the bottom:

1.Disable Always-On Mobile Data
This always-on option is default, but you can do disable it from Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Enable-disable always-on mobile data as it will decrease the battery use.

2.Turn off Wireless Network Positioning
You can change this option from Settings > Location > Use wireless networks. Using GPS surely will drain your battery; use it only when you need it badly instead you use Assisted GPS.

3.Always Keep Bluetooth off When Not in Use
You can disable it from Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth. Bluetooth is obviously draining your battery if you keep it on all the time.

4.Turn Down the Screen Brightness
If your phone support it, always have the Automatic brightness option activated, you can do it from Settings > Screen & display > Brightness. If your phone is not support this, adjust the brightness as low as however fits you.

5.Set the Screen Timeout at a Maximum of 1 Minute
You can do it from Settings > Screen & display > Screen timeout to save battery.

6.Avoid Live Wallpapers
Animated wallpaper will keep the processor working all the time and it will drain your battery.

7.If Your Device Has an AMOLED Display, a Dark Wallpaper Will Use Less Power.

8.Turn off Wi-Fi
You can turn it off from Settings > Wireless networks > Wi-Fi. If you don’t use it you better turn it off because it will suck up quite a lot of battery life.

9.If You’re Inside a lot, Having Wi-Fi Always On May be Preferable
Since 3G radio use more ammount of energy, so if you are always on hotspot area you can use your Wi-Fi instead of your 3G network. Go to Settings > Wireless networks > Wi-Fi Settings. Press the Menu button, tap on Advanced, Wi-Fi sleep policy and select the Never option.

10.If Your Phone Often Struggles to Find a 3G Connection, Disable 3G
Keep searching on 3G connection will drain your battery. You can do this from Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode > GSM only.

11.Use Widgets Wisely
Terminate widgets that are unnecessary will save your battery life.

12.Streaming Apps Will Kill Your Battery
Audio or video streaming application will decrease you battery life fast.

13.Find Out What Has Been Using the Battery
Go to Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use, and tap on the items in the list to get information on what application that has been using a lot of power.

14.Set a Reasonable Frequency for Background Updates
Set proper frequency update, to save battery by not always automatically searching updates besides what you need it the most as you can look for it when you need them, Such as:
- The HTC Mail Client, pressing Menu, and then entering More > Settings > Send & receive > Set download frequency. The default is 15 minutes, set to longer frequency.
- The HTC Weather App, set them to update every six hour.
- Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, You can control the various refresh intervals from Settings > Accounts & sync if you wish set it to longer intervals.
- Third-Party Apps, some of these apps always connect to internet by default, if you think it is unnecessary you can turn it off.



Don't know whether there is any truth in the following but worth a try I suppose!

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly:

1. Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2. Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3. Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well.

Ok, this is strange trick, but many people have said that it really does work.

If you use "Quick settings", install the "Quick battery" add-on to it. When in Quick settings and you press the battery, it comes up with a full list of resources and what percentage of battery usage they took.

Not sure of its accuracy but its an indicator in the general sense. On mine, the screen is always the highest consumer.

Plus, quick settings is pretty good in that you can have the specific toggles you use always on top and it makes it easy to use them.

Mine is the same, it won't quite last the day when I'm playing with it. I'd be very interested to see how a new larger capacity battery would do, currently I'm just charging at every opportunity (in the car, at work etc) but it's not ideal. I recently switched from USB charging to AC charging and the difference is huge; less than half the time to fully charge.

On a side note the hinge is a little bit loose, but i'd rather have it a bit looser than like it was on the n97 with a snappy shut feel to it.

I've found this too, it's a bit of a worry but I'm hoping it won't get any looser, and that one day a brave sole will post a tut on tightening it up without killing the phone.

I had the same thoughts, but the HD screen uses more power, it doesn't have a dedicated camera button and personally I couldn't live without a physical keyboard. Even just for games it makes a huge difference.

So good hey. I really wish there were more games of this standard for android. Yeah I haven't found a game or app that doesn't run smoothly yet, even though the CPU is a lower speed than the HD it seems the GPU does all the heavy lifting.

Thanks for commenting on my various points, I am going to see about getting the extended battery, even with the various power saving tips turned on where I can battery life is one thing I would love to be able to make last longer.

For me a spare battery although a solution isn't an ideal one, with then the need to constantly carry round that spare battery (and making sure it's charged). This gives you even more weight to lump around on top of the weight of the dz at 180grams! (must say it feels more quality than just weight).

I like the dedicated camera button, I used to always be taking photo's and videos on my n97 because of this, I found over the 9 months or so I had my legend I had a fraction of the photo's/videos and I think this was mainly due to the handset not lending itself to taking things very easily - dont like having to press on the screen and much prefer a dedicated button.

Ive been doing the same thing, helps save a lot of battery power. Those Sense widgets are awesome.

One of the annoying things with powerful smartphones is the relatively poor battery life. Case in point, my Desire Z would usually conk out on me before the day is even over. But in fairness though, I am a power user. I use my phone to browse, play a bit of games, do SMS and calls, and just a few months ago, used it as a WiFi hotspot for my iPad 1 (Feb-May) and iPad 2 (May to present).

Since I bought the phone last Dec 2010, I've been wanting to replace the battery with a bigger one. Google searches brought me to Mugen Power from which I initially bought the 1800 mAh replacement battery. Though it offered a bit more uptime compared to the stock HTC battery, it's still not enough for my needs.

So a couple of weeks ago, I ordered its bigger brother, the 3600 mAh Mugen Power battery, and boy does it deliver.

Anyway, I guess pictures could tell the story better:

The stock HTC battery is practically the same size as the 1800mAh Mugen battery. The 3600mAh battery appears to be two 1800 mAh batteries packed into one.

Since the 3600 mAh battery is twice as thick as the stock battery, Mugen ships with it a new plastic cover to replace the one included with the phone. The downside is obvious... it adds bulk... roughly 50% more thickness. I had to replace my old belt pouch to accommodate my "new" phone. The new cover (same rubber finish as the phone's body) snaps into place like the original cover would. Even though I ended up with a thicker phone, it still offered a few other advantages, nevertheless; It is now much more comfortable to hold and easier to open and type on the hardware keyboard. I have particularly big hands so this is a definite plus.

All else considered, I'm a utilitarian... function before form. With the new battery, I can have the phone act as a hotspot for 6-8 hours without charging. It doesn't quite match my iPad's 10-hour battery life yet, but it is close enough.

With just basic SMS, calls and a bit of in-phone browsing and games, standby time lasts around 2+ days (48+hrs). Additionally, if I use it as a hotspot for 4-5 hours, the phone lasts the whole day with power to spare.

I'm truly satisfied with this upgrade.

I bought this battery nearly a month ago and initially I was NOT impressed at all. However, it seems to have improved dramatically in the last 7-10 days as I've used it more. I am pretty much getting a day's usage out of a battery for my HTC now. Yippee. I still carry the original battery fully charged in my handbag - just in case!

The 1800mAh battery is just a marginal improvement over the original battery. I don't even think it was worth it. I still had to buy extra chargers for the office and the car, being a power user and all.

With the 3600mAh battery, I tend to have less need to use of the extra chargers.

@Oj88. Other users have encountered problems with corrupted data when they switch batteries. Here's a Mugen switch described. Same battery as you're using:

@Oj88. Are you a root user? In the thread I linked to, they have had to root their phone to get the new Mugen battery working. The reason is that it shuts off automatically (by fault) at around 20-25% of power left. The reason for that is that the phone thinks it still got the old OEM battery. They had to reset the data the phone had stored about the battery via the ClockworkMod Recovery Mod. And that requires root.

^ Hey guys. I'm sorry you're having trouble with your extended batts. I'll try to address a couple of the issues you're having.

First, what I've noticed is that the battery % isn't quite accurate for the extended batt. For instance, it could display 82% remaining, but if I reboot, it goes up to 87-88%. It's always off by 4-6%.

2nd, mine does not shut off at 23%. In fact, the Power Saver kicks in at 15% and the phone can still operate down to 11% without shutting off (never tried to wait for the phone to die).

And no, I have NOT rooted my phone.
