Flashing, firmware, baseband, help?

Im in the US and just got a SGSII. Would I just indeed follow the same steps including the modem?

Still mucking my way though the phone a bit. Guess that is what you get when you buy a phone that was not meant for the US. Ha.

Thanks!

Afaik there's no difference, Trooper. There's a prominent thread in XDA's GS2 Developer forum that contains many of the modem packages anyway, so if you update and the new one turns out to be a crock it's a simple matter to revert.

Thanks Slug. Is there a step by step over on XDA? I'm currently at work and have not had time to take a peek over there.

Cheers and thanks again.

yeah.. but KG6 annoyingly removed google video chat. i assume that KG5 being official, it includes it again.. maybe while hanging around for the new CF kernel i'l be able to find out the best way to upgrade without wiping. i'll update u guys if i find anything

just flashed back KG3 and it started bootloops. had to do a wipe anyway, now im flashing KG5 before i re-root and see how well titanium restores my stuff. i swear i'll stick to official firmware from now on :D

EDIT: titanium is a godsend. restored everything 100% to how it was. except homescreen widgets, which took 2min to do. amazing app. wiped and running KG5 now, rooted with CF root KG6 kernel

EDIT 2: hmm, plz tell me that KG5 has google video talk on it.. i dont seem to have it. my friend is signed in on gmail, with the video plugin but i just see the green dot. no cam icon. my Talk version shows as v1.3. this is annoying

Thanks will have a look when I get home. Seems pretty thorough!

Must just be me that just can't seem to 'get it', other than the newest are listed in the bottom, then how on earth do you figure out which is for which modem/kernel/pda/etc ? :P

That aside the rest of the guide is foolproof, and not a ton of steps to go through as back in the days, flashing HTC devices like the legend or hero :P

It's pretty well hidden up at the top, but if there's only a single .tar file in the archive then it's flashed in Odin as PDA. The kernel image and modem ROM are included. This is the case with the XXKG6 package.

No its not just you. I have no clue what firmware Im supposed to use or what not. I also have no idea how to find out on my phone what the current version of firmware is.

Help is appreciated.

EDIT:

Here is a screenshot of my phone right now.

After i read this, for some reason the PDA/PHONE and possible CSC started appearing on that collective firmware page, and somehow made more sense, and as i understood it i don't seem to have to flash my CSC unless necessary? or if it's included in a package that has a different CSC than what i use already, right ?

And as it said in the top of the article people should flash the closest as to their original firmware and kernel, in my case it all starts with XX-something, so from the list, i should pick anything newer than what i have already, as long as it have XX-something too, right ?

The one you mention i believe have the same CSC as i'd need to use, but in my case (if i got it all right) then as long as the CSC is either scandinavian, or european, i should be alright since the phone is unbranded ?

No its not just you. I have no clue what firmware Im supposed to use or what not. I also have no idea how to find out on my phone what the current version of firmware is.

Open your dialer, and type *#1234#

You should get the PDA/PHONE/CSC info accordingly :)

Us idiots gotta work together :P first time in my life i've not been able to work this out on my own though hehe.

Thanks got that info.

Now which firmware to flash? Haha.\

Thanks again!

EDIT:

I've identified that this is that my phone has.

XWKE7

Firmware info
PDA:XWKE7
PHONE: XXKE4

Build date: 18/05/2011

So which firmware do I download and flash?

Even more confused.. maybe that's myself that question things though, but going through the list, and seeing my phone in Kies being identified as (NEE)

Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

this is the only one on there 'available' for me, i believe NEE is nordic, but what are the actual differences between the latest which is OXA, or another package that's generic europe ?

And still.. rather safe than sorry.. flashing something that's NOT a NEE won't do any damage or irrevocable damage?

I edited my post. :)

Ah, right right :)

Wouldn't you get the same version as i have ? (wrote it in a longer post above) if you plug it in via kies?

Not sure if it's safe to assume that flashing un-official firmware from beyond the latest official version is better, or maybe i'm just anal like that :P

Oh wait you used kies? Someone told me in another post not to uses kies but to use odin? Sorry this is all new to me. I just dont want to do anything to harm the phone. Im also in the USA running mine on the ATT network. So want to make sure it will not adversely effect anything.

Thanks!

I think i read somewhere to install Kies and from there, install the drivers, then when you use Odin make sure Kies is NOT running in the background (also says in that big compiled list of firmwares on the XDA forums)

I read that Kies can (inventing a new term here) 'Soft-brick' the phone 'coz it's crappy coded, and to just avoid it entirely since it causes more hassle than worth, whereas Odin is fairly straight forward as long as you don't tick a few boxes.. but i REALLY doubt it's gonna hurt the phoen permanently to update to the latest official firmware via Kies before you start tinkering.

I'd say you probably have more cause to worry than i do, since you've got a phone that was originally released in europe before the states (Yay!) i just hail from the Hero days where i saw countless of people bricking their phones since they tried to flash a rom designed for GSM and not CDMA phones.

Lurking around the XDA forums i only found 1 guy that managed to brick his SGS2 though, but he flashed a rom designed for SGS1...

Another info bit i picked up somewhere else was the phone is virtually indestructable, as long as you don't try to flash the bootloader.

So that's my summarized points i got floating around in my head, what's your take? :)

if i were u, i'd flash XXKG5 via Odin.. thats the newest official firmware, running gingerbread 2.3.4.. it seems a bit smoother, the lockscreen lag seems less (maybe im imagining it) and although im yet to test a full day's battery on it, 2.3.4 is always better than 2.3.3 :D

the only thing thats annoying me is that KG5 doesnt include google video chat.. i have no idea why, seeing that i saw some blogger who wrote about the official 2.3.4 on kies, with google video talk, and the version was KG5!

I'd been looking at exactly that, especially because it doesn't include the CSC, but only phone/PDA.

But it has the OXA (Poland) which is something i still can't find a clear answer on.. i'm just the type of person that turns on the light in a room before i run through it :P

Though a few things have started appearing obvious, with that almost indiffierent localization left unclear.

Still if anyone could offer some aid, some help, ask or answer questions feel free! might aswell make it a SGS2 Flashing/rooting newbie FAQ while we're here ;)

Thanks to anyone that responds in advance! still appreciate your help, it's been tremendous!

hmm i was also very worried about that, the fact that the firmware is polish etc.. and if it would just change how my look behaves, languages etc :D but i think its just the source..my phone is exactly the same as it was when i had the official (and unofficial) XEU CSC firmware.. same languages, everything, except the XEU came with a few extra apps, bbc iplayer etc. i wouldnt worry about it, but maybe someone else could give a more specific answer :D

I think we're on to something already.. i have the XX* variants, not XEU, also when i plug it into kies it's listed as firmwareblahblah(NEE)

I'm guessing that you're british - i don't have the BBC iplayer, but i DO remember watching reviews on youtube (as i geek out and do research before investing in such) where (duh) british reviewers showed off the bbc iplayer app... so i think you may be right that it's just the source, but then again if i root it afterwards and titanium rip those bloatware apps out, then that shouldn't be much of a problem ?

That is.. IF it's just the source, or coutry/region of origin :)

Would you mind pointing me in the right direction?

By the way tried Kies. It flat out did not work haha. Looks like everyone is right about that program strange!

nope, XEU was the CSC (UK i think).. my firmware versions were the XX ones too. i just got the UK CSC coz i thought they were.. i dont know, english? :D the bbc iplayer doesnt work for me either, and i have already removed most of those apps with titanium, not a problem at all. the the OXA XXKG5 doesnt include any bloatware i think.. apart from that, i cant tell a difference between the one i had. sorry if this doesnt make much sense any more :D
