Viber is here for Android (update at post 65)!!!

Exit button does not seem to work all the time, after shutting down sometimes it connects again. I think this might happen when it cannot send the "exit" signal to the Viber server, and than it connects again.

The "Exit" button has nothing to do with being connected to the internet or not. It's client only, and simply closes Viber itself on your Android (no confirmation from server needed).

Please remove Viber, and reinstall it from Market and see if the problem persists. Also - see if you can identify a specific pattern for this problem (otherwise I won't be able to repeat it here in the lab).

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to announce that according to preliminary results, it seems as though we managed to find and fix the collision problem of Viber with CM7 and MIUI ROMs (and possible the rest as well)
Both these ROMs "change" the device's identity (virtually, of course), preventing Viber from adapting itself correctly to the device's microphone configuration. This is why most of you with ROMs experienced the one-side audio issue.

Anyway - we are working on adding a fix to the new version that will hopefully be officially released next week to Market.

Updates soon,
Viber.

I downloaded Viber yesterday and it's great! Called my family overseas with no problem. Only suggestions I have, is being able to set personal sound notifications and ring tones. Also for SMS or MMS, can we get an update to have the virtual keyboard rotate with the phone? that would be great.

All these features are planned:
1. Sending MMS and keyboard on landscape mode will be available in version 2.1 that will hopefully be released in a few months.
2. Custom ringtone option will also be available in the future.

i downloaded viber and it's really great but i had my phone upgraded (from froyo to gingerbread)...now my problem is i can't see the shortcut for my viber on top of the screen. can somebody pls help? thanks!!! :)

If you mean Viber's purple icon at the top - we have removed it in our latest Market version, but it can be enabled again in Viber's settings.
Please search for it there, and if you still don't find it - let me know.

Uninstalled and re-installed Viber. The problem of being unable to exit got worse. When I press "Exit" the notification icon disappears, than appears again after a second, and connects again. After six tries I tired Forced Stop and it closed :)

Not a deal breaker. Battery use seems to be minimal.

HTC Desire HD, Stock HTC Android 2.3.3

We haven't gotten this complaint yet since we release the new version with the "Exit" button... It's strange.
Are you sure it's not a custom ROM or another app that's colliding with Viber, causing this issue?

And by the way - you can disable the notification icon in Viber's settings.

Hi all,
Viber 2.0.2 has just been released to Market!

What's new?
- Viber is back on Market for HTC Wildfire and HTC Hero users. However, note that due to immanent compatibility problems, Viber might not work 100% smoothly. We're working hard to improve these problems.
- After hard work, as promised, Viber now supports *some* of the famous custom Android ROMs, such as CM7 and MIUI. We need your feedback in order to make sure the major problems with these ROMs are now resolved.

Please make sure you download the latest version.
As usual - for questions/technical issues feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Viber.

This post is for member ViberMedia.

From the Viber web sight.
  • Can I call people who don't have Viber?
    Yes, if the person you're calling doesn't have Viber, the call will be placed like regular call, but don't forget to invite your friends to Viber so your next call is free ;).
My question is, if I have Viber on my phone and I make a call to another person that does not have Viber the call will go through, BUT!!. Is the call on my end still going through Viber and the Internet or is it defaulting back to the normal cell phone operations and calling through the carriers cell network rather than 3G or WiFi?
I ask because it does not point this out, Some one who has Viber on their phone may mistakenly believe that even though the other person does not have Viber and their for is paying for their in call min that the Viber on their phone is circumventing the cell network and placing a free call on their end when in fact it has defaulted to normal cell phone operations and the user is racking up their min charges.
Can you please clear this up, I would like to try Viber but I want to know what will happen if that call goes through to a non Viber user.

Never mind, tried the app and the call quality is very poor.

I'm a little confused... When you cancel WiFi sleep mode, does it work fine even when your phone is locked? Does it mean that WiFi goes to sleep immediately whenever your phone is locked?

@ral -
So the problem is solved now?

@androidfonefan -
When you call someone who doesn't have Viber, you'll be prompted a warning message explaining clearly that the call is going to be routed through your regular cellular company (just like a normal call that's initiated through your normal phone app). So it doesn't use up your data, it's just a normal call.

About the quality - please try to make a Viber call when both sides are on high-speed WiFi connections. The quality should be excellent, and use up Viber's full potential.

@Viber

Still have the same problem. First it is intermittent, but sometimes when I turn Viber off it still restarts. Turning it off a second or third time does the trick. If it does not, I can Force Stop it (only had to do this once).

I have Viber on a HTC Desire HD with the stock ROM updated to the latest HTC officially released OS. If no one else is reporting the issue, no need to worry about it. Could be the way I set up my phone or something.

I turn it off here, since our 3G network can only support Viber in very few areas. In most, the call will drop, so I use it for WiFi communications only. That being said, it works better than Skype. I was able to make a 45 second call on Viber before being dropped, where Skype did not work at all.

We haven't tested Viber on Atrix thoroughly yet (more popular devices are prioritized first) so there could be errors with it, but I must say we don't remember receiving a similar complaint from other Atrix users. Are you using a custom ROM or stock ROM?

Also, do all other apps with alerts upon similar events (for example - skype) work fine when your phone is locked?

@ral -
There is actually a known issue with some phones that Viber *occasionally* comes back to life after choosing to Exit it. We're working to fix it right now, and the issue will be solved in the next version we'll release to Market.

Hi my wife has a desire z on android 2.3.3 when she installed it on her phone she found that when exiting other apps on her phone it would reboot then if she went into another app upon exiting her phone would reboot again so she uninstalled viber and it has been fine just wondered if anyone else has had this issue.

Hmm.. we haven't encountered such complaint before (and to be frank - it doesn't sound like something that Viber could cause).

Is she using a custom ROM? Is it possible that any other app is causing a collision with Viber?

No just the standard uk vodafone 2.3 it only started happening after installing viber and stopped happening when she uninstalled it.
She is going to download it again and see if the rebooting problem comes back.
Will let you know.
